Any updates for kana-only words? I’d definitely appreciate seeing more of those!
After I finished WaniKani the first time a few years ago and started studying elsewhere, I realized that there were a lot of weird omissions, common words that I had never learned. Glad to see them being added over time, but still odd that they were missing until now.
It’s a common topic of discussion but I think WK’s selection is fine if you consider it as a kanji-learning tool and not a vocabulary learning tool. The vocabulary is here to reinforce the kanji meanings and readings first and foremost. The issue with adding an exhaustive selection of common vocab is that some common kanji will be extremely over-represented which is bad if you’re just trying to practice your kanji knowledge. Think of all the very common words that contain 見 or 目 or 事 for instance.
I personally use other tools (namely Anki and Bunpro) to study vocab, so I’m absolutely fine with this arrangement personally.
The main event for these content updates as far as I’m concerned is the introduction of new kanji which is always a treat.
Hey, out of curiosity, is there a reason why the kanji for limb 肢 was added with no corresponding vocabulary words? I personally find it quite difficult to memorise kanji without using and associating it with real life examples (ie vocab words), so having just the character by itself isn’t particular useful.
The moment you Guru 肢, you’ll have 選択肢 (Choices) as vocab unlocking
.
Oh perfect! I’m using the Tsurukame app, and currently, the page for the kanji doesn’t have a “Used In” section so I was a bit taken aback at first and thought that meant they hadn’t added any words for it. Must not have updated the content properly yet, as if I use WaniKani on desktop it shows up.
My bad!
Have you considered adding 追加? It’s fairly common (N2 according to jisho) and uses the onyomi of 追 which is only introduced very late currently (level 53) and with less common vocab.
I ask because I regularly encounter it and always forget the reading because I never learned it here…
Have you guys considered adding a new meaning for 大きく? I feel like “bigly” would be faster to type than “in a big way” or “on a grand scale,” and it’s a lot more fun too.
Might add that as your own custom allowable. Not sure I’d consider it as universal as the standard answers.
The 2nd batch has been published!
I realized that the original announcement was missing the 叔 (kanji)’s level movement, but since it needed to happen today for the 叔父 and 叔母 moving down, the kanji has been moved as well. Sorry for any inconvenience ![]()
Like you wouldn’t believe it, just yesterday I was reading about 〜ヶ月 and how to use it, and today it showed up on my lessons! Thanks so much for this update!
![]()
I noticed that 一ヶ月’s reading explanation has a small mistake in it, wherein it calls いち becoming いっ rendaku (when this is not rendaku).
一 uses the on’yomi you learned with it, but gets rendaku’d, so watch out for that. The rest is as you learned it!
This is normal, and it has to do with the typo-forgiveness feature. You have to spell out numbers usually, or otherwise the numbers “1”, “2”, “7” etc. would all be counted as ‘typos’ of one another.
I could’ve sworn they allowed the typing of numbers for number things
For large numbers it seems to work. Like 77th birthday.
It looks like we usually have answers using the numerals 1, 2, 3, etc. in the allow list, so I just added “1 Month” to 一ヶ月.
I’ll add this to our internal guide so that we can be consistent about this too. Thanks!
Meanwhile, I’m on level 59, and suddenly I have one fewer kanji needed to hit 60. I didn’t expect that I’d be making progress towards leveling up while I was on vacation for three weeks, ![]()
Anyway, thanks for the update! It’s great to see some notable words that have long been missing from WK get added.
By the way, if you’re looking for suggestions for more things to add, here are some ideas I had:
未練
望遠鏡
星座
星屑
Or if you just want words with weird readings, I’d suggest 平等, 女房, 蝶番, 反吐 and 境内.
I’ve just published the third batch. Enjoy!
