Wallpaper generator ⚠️ No longer supported ⚠️

I have mine run once an hour at :30 That’s the most that it can really change right, once an hour. :30 gives me some time to do the reviews. SLA of 1hr is fine :stuck_out_tongue:

This is what I was hoping to do, but I wasn’t sure how to run the batch file without it showing the command prompt every time. So instead, I tried using “unlock” as the trigger instead of time intervals to prevent the window from appearing at unexpected moments.

Just managed to get it running silently though, so I now switched it to initially trigger at log-in and repeat every 1hr. :+1:

This is such a cool idea! I’m curious would this be able to cause any lag while playing an fps type game? I’ve heard of some issues with some of the other animated wallpapers in the past.

It’s not animated, it creates regular images, and since there’s an hourly API limit, you can’t request your data too often anyway.

From one day to the next, my wallpaper generation is not working anymore - instead of Kanji it is just returning a grey image in the requested size (grey is my chosen background color). Am I the only one with this problem? I just saw that it might be connected to the number of requests (however I am not getting an error or anything - I have at max. 1 every hour, i.e. 24 requests a day - that is when my computer is running 24h). So this shouldn’t be the problem?

Works for me. But I can recommend using this one: New and Improved Wallpaper Generator Has a lot more features (Edit: Looks like that one has it’s own issues right now too )

Thanks for the recommendation lol. It might be the same one that @pygospa is talking about. I’m working on fixing it right now (I just learned about it being broken last night).

It’s working now! It seems that a bot accessed the script that generates the kanji orders (because I forgot to password protect that script :face_with_hand_over_mouth: ) and caused things to break.

Oh shoot, yes, that’s the one I’m talking about. Sorry for using the wrong thread.

And btw. it’s working again. Thanks for this extremly fast response, @Masayoshiro

Hey hey ! So my wallpaper was just replaced by an image saying my API key was generating too many images so had to be blocked and that the limit is 100/day. But I only make 48 calls per day, so I’m a little confused…

Yes!
I wanted to say I’ve been using this as my background on my laptop for 4 whole years with no issues, and it’s glorious and beautiful and I’ve gotten compliments from strangers on it. Every time I update it makes me happy to see progress I’ve gained.

Maybe the limit is not 100 calls per day but 100 items per day.

:information_source: The one you’re looking for is New and Improved Wallpaper Generator

As there is some level of confusion about which version is actively supported, I have updated the title of this post and archived the github repositories.

When I first wrote the first alpha of this, while still being a student, I did not imagine that it would draw this amount of interest from both people using it daily, and for so many other developers making their own improved versions in almost every language imagineable.

The truth is that I’ve been keeping my own repositories live all this time, in the hopes that I would finish all of those features that I promised to you and myself, but I’ve just not had the time or interest to delve back into those codebases. There are better versions of this generator available, and there’s no point to resurrect this project.

And so for your, and my sake, I feel like this project needs a proper, and definitive closure.

Since the hosting is free, I’m going to keep the javascript version running for as long as the API is supported, for those people that still depend on it. But there will be no further development at this point.
