Yeah, makes me wish I was at all capable of writing them…
Alright, let’s give this thing a go
Reasons to vote for クプルムの花嫁
If you’ve ever read 狼少年は今日も嘘を重ねる and thought “oh man, this Botan girl is adorable, I wish we could see more of her”, Shiina is basically Botan but a few years older. Both give me cute aggression (though admittedly, Botan a bit more than Shiina)
Disclaimer: I may be biased, I’m a big fan of cute girls
Ooh, I never really drew that connection, but yeah, she does look like an older Botan!
…and now excuse me, I have a sudden urge to read 狼少年は今日も嘘を重ねる again.
Love how one of the pictures is randomly in Spanish (I assume). I did enjoy the first volume and just ordered a few more volumes yesterday.
College-age Botan if she went through a ギャル phase.
A bit more than a few years though since Botan was first year middle school and I think Shiina is in college.
I just reread it with a Discord-only book club. It was a lot of fun!
…You know what, I never really thought of just how young the kids in 狼少年 are. I figured Botan must have been about 15, but I guess she’s much younger - Google tells me middle school starts at 12, though I have no idea if that’s also true in Japan
Shiina is 18, at any rate. That’s explicitly stated in the manga.
The official manga description on Amazon and elsewhere states that they are in high school, but this is incorrect. The manga itself is ambiguous for a while, but makes clear at least twice that they are actually in middle school. I expect Botan is 12-13 while Aoi and Itsuki are 13-14.
@Greya that speech was really amazing do you do anything related to sales for a living…?
I can’t come up with anything better
Thanks!
Oh my gosh, what?! I was definitely not expecting such a response! I was just hoping to save it from being eliminated! I am glad more people are interested in it now, though~
No, actually! I don’t think I could go on about just anything like that. It’s just that Twin Spica has been a favourite manga of mine for a while now, and over the years I’ve spent time thinking about what it is exactly that makes me like it that much. So I just collected the various thoughts I’ve had into a post.
I’ve been lurking around the IMC a lot (if it wasn’t already obvious by me constantly talking about how I wish I could read FMA and ダン飯 in my study log). I’ve been avoiding voting for the next one because I know I’m not there yet. I know I need to focus on the clubs in progress.
But. BUT. If I could. If only I could. I would love to read some of these.
And some of them, I’m looking at the natively level like “Frieren and Promised Neverland are Lv26 atm, and this is easier than that… So I could… Could I? Can I? I shouldn’t. But could I?” And my thoughts are basically that on loop.
I’ve got the time to read more. But I don’t. But I could. I did in the readathon. I read so so sooo much that day. I can read difficult things if I’ve got the time and motivation for them. Might take me like an hour to get through a page but I have put in that effort before. But if I miss one week I’m never catching up. I’m already behind on other book clubs I’m in. But I want to.
Help?
The difficulty level is not much different from Trails, I think you’ll do fine. It’s not easy but that’s how you progress you know, challenging yourself.
Admittedly we had a nice ramp up in this club since we started with the comparatively easy Witch Hat Atelier. If you want a more relaxed experience I can recommend returning to this one.
FMA would have been a bit rough on the other hand, it’s really at the upper end of what I would consider acceptable for an intermediate club.
i’ve been thinking about it and basically everything i’m reading at around natively 30 and above i basically need an english translation to check against. (Frankly, it’s useful for lower level stuff… Ruridragon is a bit confusing on occasion, so having access to the mangaplus version is really useful). Doing it this way can really make difficult stuff a lot more manageable.
Now I just happened to have a giant eng manga collection of FMA and Dungeon Meshi already, so that was quite lucky, but yeah.
You can substitute an anime probably for most stuff if a crunchyroll or netflix sub is easier
/edit also, generally, a week is quite long to do a chapter tbh. I would say I take about an hour to do a chapter of Dungeon Meshi right now, give or take, and I can still manage two a week. Mind you I have a pretty strict ‘schedule’ of reading
For me it’s having to regularly use ChatGPT to translate some stuff but it’s the same idea.
To be fair that one’s a bit of a special case in that it’s really not that difficult a manga, but then sometimes it just throws a load of colloquialisms your way and you’re completely lost
I’m pretty sure the only reason I’m managing this one is from knowing the English script so well But you got me thinking about a half remembered psychology experiment where people did worse on a test if they were told in advance the test was difficult, so maybe I shouldn’t worry about the levels so much…
I’ve read the whole of FMA and Dungeon Meshi before, which I think is part of why I’ve been so tempted to join those. I already know I like the manga. I also watched a couple Frieren episodes after reading the manga and I could hear/remember working on the lines for that, so intentionally using anime in that way sounds like a good idea.
I think I’ll give it a go and try (and fail) to not be too hard on myself if/when I can’t keep up
It gets easier as you go along! And it really doesn’t matter whether you keep up with the book club or not; you can always check in weeks or months afterwards, after all. That’s what I did for some of my first ABC reads.
@Belthazar’s (remaining) hostages seeing Bocchi in a three-way-tie
Well, I mean, I’ve got two books in that three-way tie, which has never happened for me before.
We only need one more vote for NANA and it’s a four way tie! Or two votes and NANA wins!!
