Please take difficulty into account

Some people do find that reading a work they love or know already is inherently motivating, but please be realistic. Look at the samples and compare to others. Remember that both language and density contribute to difficulty.

Difficulty Scores

For most items we list two different difficulty scores. They are displayed in [] in front of the name of the book/manga. The first score is determined by the polls within the nomination posts. These polls only take previews into account and are very tightly bound to the people that give feedback in the polls and are therefore not objective measures of difficulty. The second score is the Natively level (if available), because of the rating system the ratings without ?? should be reasonably accurate, but the levels with ?? are just an initial guess that must be taken with a pinch of salt.

When will we start and how many will we pick?

We will likely begin reading on the 18th of February, a week after we finish reading 月刊少女野崎くん. If a short manga (expected less than 8 weeks) wins we will also read the second place option following that without holding another vote. (The short manga determination is not final since it is based on limited information and might change)

How does the vote work?

The poll will be closed on Sunday, December 25th at the latest.

You can vote for up to 5 options.

You can change your vote at any time by clicking ‘Show vote’ at the bottom.

Could a regular please change the title to [Now voting!] Beginner Japanese Book Club // Now Reading: 神さまがまちガえる Thank you!

It’s funny. I almost don’t want the ones I’d like to read to win, because my reading load is gonna be so stacked for a while.

At least, it won’t start until mid-February. ^^

Are these two nominations I made back in 2020 destined to always fall short? :joy:

If it helps at all, I voted for both of them?

Also just realized how much I love even just seeing the different nominations because someone has already done all the work of researching and making a recommendation and so even if something I like doesn’t win, I’ve got a new interesting read to add to my own “wish list.”

… which reminds me, I should go add these on Natively while I’m thinking about it.

The last 2 and a half days of voting have started! If you haven’t done so yet have a look at the poll and choose the works that you would like to read with the book club!

With that the poll is done and we officially have a winner: 古見さんは、コミュ症です。

We will most likely start reading on Feb 18th so if you want to import the physical version of the manga you have some time!

We will also have to say goodbye to 妖怪ギガ and ゲゲゲの鬼太郎 because they did not reach the threshold of 15% in any of the last 3 polls.

That almost concludes the year for this book club, I hope to see you all with plenty of motivation next year when we start reading 月刊少女野崎くん.

Edit: Could one of the Regulars change the title to Beginner Japanese Book Club // Now Reading: 神さまがまちガえる Thanks!

An advance warning to everyone: the first chapter of this has a couple of panels which are absolutely lousy with text, but don’t be discouraged - this is definitely not the standard for the manga as a whole. It’s just the standard “first chapter is always more difficult” rule. (Also, chapters are quite short - an average of just under ten pages per chapter.)

While you’re all reading 古見さん, I’ll be reading 満月をさがして since I already bought it and will need to decide whether to buy the rest of the series. I’ll be sure to let you all know if it’s any good.

Could it be!? The first 5 volumes of 「古見さんは、コミュ症です。」 are free right now on kobo/rakuten and bookwalker?

I’m not sure why there appears to be two different versions of each volume, one free and one not. They look the exact same to me in the previews at least.

It’s because the “free” ones aren’t free to own, they are free to read until January 12th.

I had a feeling they’d come up as time-limited-free about now. The volumes so do every now and then, and it seemed like post-voting was the perfect time for it to show up again (even though the free period doesn’t overlap with the club schedule).

Ahh, I knew it was too good to be true. Those limited time readings always confuse me.

Too bad you can’t download it and read it later. wink wink

If you download it to the Bookwalker app and then set the device to flight mode, then mysterious things might happen
but the magic will dissolve as soon as it goes online again

You can also block an app from connecting to the internet. :eyes:

Oh true, I can block mobile data. But that wouldn’t block internet access while I’m connected to Wifi, I think?

Doesn’t seem like it, unless your phone allows it or you have an app that lets you.

Ah, I completely missed the vote for the book after next (it’s high time I set this thread to “Watching”), but I’m glad to see that Komi Can’t Communicate was chosen, which is what I would have picked lol. I’ve seen the anime and I quite loved it so I’m definitely looking forward to that, especially since we’ll be starting that book just as my semester break begins meaning I’ll have plenty of time to enjoy it  (Well, for the first 3 weeks anyways lol) for now I’ll be joining 月刊少女野崎くん, so see you all there!

Oh and by the way, could someone please tell me what the numbers like [2.11/L22] in front of the book names mean? No idea about the first number and I think the second is the Natively level but I’m not sure.
