Visually similar radicals in handwriting? Better radical names or mnemonics?

How do you personally distinguish between these pairs?

I just memorise them like that. The extra stroke on the “pelican” is only on a few Kanji.
What I find interesting is that it is missing here, even though 初 usually has it:

Maybe it doesn’t matter that much? (It’s a very messed-up font though)

As for the winter radical, those on the bottom of a Kanji are often written with 3 strokes and on the right side with 4 strokes. At least in my experience, I doubt that it’s an actual rule.
