## What is this?
If English is not your first language, learning Japanese through WaniKani can feel like learning two languages at once. You need to recall the English meaning AND mentally translate it to understand what the word actually means.
This script removes that extra step. After you answer a review question, it automatically shows a translation badge in your native language right next to the correct answer.
## Install
**Install from Greasy Fork:** WaniKani Meaning Translation
**Requirements (install these first):**
1. [Tampermonkey](https://www.tampermonkey.net/) browser extension
2. [WaniKani Open Framework]( Wanikani Open Framework ) — required for settings panel
**Recommended:**
- [WaniKani Reviews Plus]( WaniKani Reviews Plus ) — shows correct answers in a green box which this script translates
- [Wanikani Double-Check]( Wanikani Double-Check ) — fully compatible, retype/cancel works correctly

## How to Change Your Language
You do NOT need to edit the code. Just:
1. Click the gear icon (
) on any WaniKani page
2. Hover over “Script Menu” then click “Settings”
3. Click “Meaning Translation”
4. Pick your language from the dropdown (100+ languages available)
5. Click Save
The default language is Indonesian. Change it to anything you want.
## Supported Languages
The dropdown includes all of these (and more):
| Language | Language | Language |
|—|—|—|
| Indonesian | Spanish | French |
| German | Portuguese | Korean |
| Chinese (Simplified) | Chinese (Traditional) | Arabic |
| Russian | Thai | Vietnamese |
| Turkish | Italian | Dutch |
| Polish | Swedish | Hindi |
| Tagalog | Malay | Japanese (lol) |
| Bengali | Tamil | Ukrainian |
| Greek | Czech | Romanian |

…and 70+ more in the settings panel.
## Features
- Translates all meanings shown by WaniKani Reviews Plus (primary, alternative, allowed)
- Translations are cached locally — each word only gets translated once, then it loads instantly
- Uses Google Translate (free endpoint, no API key needed)
- Falls back to MyMemory translation service if Google is unavailable
- Works on Review, Lesson, and Extra Study pages
- Fully compatible with Double-Check — if you retype your answer, translations appear again correctly
- Settings panel integrated into WaniKani’s existing Script Menu
- Zero performance impact on your reviews
## How It Works
After you submit an answer:
1. Script detects the meaning text shown in the green answer box
2. Checks if translation is already cached (instant if yes)
3. If not cached, fetches translation from Google Translate
4. Displays a small badge next to the meaning: `Boundary
Batas`
5. Caches the result so next time it appears instantly
## Known Limitations
- Translation appears AFTER you answer (intentional — no spoilers before answering)
- Requires internet connection for the first translation of each word (cached locally after that)
- Long multi-word meanings may produce slightly long badges (cosmetic only)
## Compatibility
Tested with:
- WaniKani Reviews Plus 1.45.0
- Wanikani Double-Check 3.2.4
- WaniKani Open Framework 1.2.10
- Chrome, Edge, Firefox with Tampermonkey
## Changelog
- v8.0.0 (current) — WKOF settings panel with 100+ language dropdown, flag emoji toggle, cache auto-clear on language change
- v7.0.1 — Stable release, Double-Check retype support, duplicate badge prevention
## Feedback Welcome
Let me know:
- Which language are you using?
- Does the translation quality look good for your language?
- Any bugs?
I would love to hear from Spanish, French, Korean, and Arabic learners especially. If you find translation issues for your language, let me know and I can look into it.
