[Userscript] Self-Study Quiz

It tells you the hotkey for each button if you hover over it. Prev/next is Ctrl+LeftArrow / Ctrl+RightArrow.

Hi!
the script is briliant and since I started using it my retention of studied material increased greatly <3

I do have a couple of questions:

  • is there a way to open the item directly from the script window? (there is only [i] icon but it only shows the information)
  • would it be possible to make the script window somewhat bigger and maybe darken more/blur the background (to remove disctraction)? [1]
  • (not really a question) quite often I have to hit page refresh to show the start-quiz item in the menu (especially after finishing reviews/lessons – have anyone faced similiar issue?

EDIT:

[1] I checked:

#wkof_ds #wkofs_bkgd {
	background-color: rgba(0,0,0,0.7);
	backdrop-filter: blur(10px);
}

and IMHO looks better :slight_smile:

Hello does this still work in the big 2026? I have spent 4 hours trying to follow this but to no avail.

1.) I think my UI is more modern or different or this is not working because I cant find the “Self-Study Quiz” button anywhere.

2.) Whenever I try downloading from GreasyFork it sends me to an “intermediate page,” so I ended up just copying the plain code over into Tampermonkey. Oh and when I try to click on that orange “download section” it just directs me to Home | Tampermonkey which is not helpful whatsoever because I already installed the extention.

3.) I tried also downloading WaniKani Self-Study Fix — UserStyles.world just in case (ive read everything i can when it comes to getting userscript self-study to work) but I don’t know how to operate that either.

I was really just hoping to study the 400 Kanji that are on the AP Japanese list. Am I missing something or should I just give up? All I want is to be able to make a custom selection of kanji for studying in the same way that wanikani presents them. Why is this so difficult please help I am desparate.

TLDR: I tried everything and nothing works SOS

The script works fine for me.

There is no startup button for Self Study Quiz. There is a menu option as in the picture below.

Edit: I see your Tampermonkey extension is installed but disabled. Click on the little red X next to “enabled” to enable it.

I know your Tampermonkey says “Enabled” but this is a bug. When you see the red X it means it is disabled.

I fear that SSQ might not do what you expect it to do. You can only study WK kanji selected by some custom filter. You cannot study kanji that are not in the WK database.

There is a possibility to use custom filters to study a user specified list of kanji that are in the WK database. If you are interested I will provide further instructions.

@rfindley
I’m having itsy-bitsy-tiny issue with audio – I thought it was comming from WK itself but for 今ćčŽ (https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/今ćčŽ) I’m getting こんねん audio (instead of こべし in the item itself) which, for the listening exercise (with larger backlog) is slightly confusing.

Audio in Quiz sounds like from WK (and not externally generated) so I’m wondering why it happens.

But I think most of the kanji are in Wani Kani. I would definitely be interested if you can help me.

The script pointed to by @rfindley will work. There is another filter that will work as well

This script will add a number of filters to your SSQ settings. The one you need is Explicit List. The difference with the Item List filter recommended by @rfindley are

  • the ability to save your items in a file on your hard disk and get them back later
  • The items are managed with a text editor to edit them.
