Typing readings with Android+Hardware keyboard

I have android tablet with a hardware keyboard.
I switched to US layaut.
When I try to type “nihyaku” I always get something like “ににひゃひゃく”.
So every previous character is duplicated when I start to type another character. It happens only with a hardware keyboard.

Is it possible to avoid this behaviour? Do you need any extra information?

I’m just guessing here, but…

Somewhere in the settings, either for android itself or for an app or for the hardware, there is probably a keyboard setting that says something like “echo back key presses” that you would need to turn off.

For example, this YouTube video shows something similar for a specific app:

You’re probably right.
I wonder who the meow would ever need this setting though? trunky_rolling

Programmers, most likely.

i made “Keyboard echo” off (even though I don’t know what it is and how works)
1/ It was turned for both virtual and physical keybords. But higana duplication happened only for physical keyboard.
2/ Even though “Keyboard echo” is off - I experience the same hiragana duplication.

Could be an issue with the romaji to hiragana conversion. When you type, is your keyboard configured to input Japanese or English? If you type in a random app, does it show Japanese or English text?

If it shows Japanese, I recommend that you switch to English input for wanikani, because I’ve already encountered issues when both the website and the IME try to convert romaji to kana.

When you type, is your keyboard configured to input Japanese or English?

American english layout

If you type in a random app, does it show Japanese or English text?

US english layout will give you latin letters in any app.

Btw: if you will type in wanikani with japaneese keyboard - there’s no duplication. But you need to switch all the time to english because meanings is in english.

Yeah I never had the issue on wanikani but I definitely had weird stuff in bunpro for instance, I thought maybe with a specific combination of IME and web browser it could happen on wanikani too.

My only idea at this point would be to try with a third party app like Smouldering Durtles.

Are you using a Samsung device by chance? We had a user last year who had a duplication issue with kana on a Samsung tablet while using an external keyboard.

The fix we found was this:

With the solution being:

Go to Settings/Accessibility/Interaction and dexterity/ and disable “Bounce keys”.

I don’t know if this is the same or similar to “echo keys” mentioned in this thread, but worth a try.

yes, I am on Samsung Tab 10.
Bounce keys were disabled by default. Can’t disable it stronger))

So… I will try 3rd party app instead (which I would like to aviod because applications typically look terrible on big screens.)

Let us know if it resolves for you or not with the 3rd party app. Would be good to know if there’s something on our end we could do. I forwarded this issue to our engineering team.

Smouldering Durtles work fine with keyboard.
Do you need any debugging info?

Yes, debugging info would be great!

Please provide:

  • Device
  • OS and version
  • Browser and version

To do this quickly, you can visit https://www.mysupportdetails.com/ to see all your details, take a screenshot, then attach that screenshot in your reply.

Also, if you’re up for it, you could take a screenshot of the console errors you see in your device when the error occurs. If you want to do this but don’t know how, let me know and I’ll type up some instructions.

Thanks!

Thanks for that info! I passed it along to the engineering team to see what can be done.

thank you. I believe to get logs from Chrome under Android I need to install and play with adb. Not ready for it yet.
But still… if its necessary - can play with it too.
