It’s much easier to understand after reading the script in the description:
ひっついたり離れたりを繰り返し動く２つの黒い点。
実は、この黒い点はそれぞれ、物質を構成する基本的な粒子である「原子」です。
イギリスのノッティンガム大学などの国際研究チームは、原子が互いに結合して分子になったり、分離したりする様子を動画として撮影することに初めて成功したと発表しました。
髪の毛の幅の50万分の１という小さな世界で起きる原子の動きを映像として捉えたのです。
研究チームは、観察対象である原子番号75番のレニウムという原子２つを、カーボンナノチューブの中に入れて、原子の動きを制限することによって撮影。
撮影には、原子より小さな粒子である電子のビームを対象にあてて観察する透過型電子顕微鏡を用いました。
観察によれば、２つのレニウム原子は、一旦結合して分子を形成したあと、振動をしながら距離が離れていきます。
その距離がそれぞれの原子半径の合計を超えると、結合が切れて振動が止まり、原子が互いに独立します。
その後距離を縮め再び結合して分子が形成されました。
この研究成果は、アメリカの科学誌Science Advancesに掲載されています。
