I started studying with Tobira this past January, and am currently paused at the end of Chapter 6 (since end of June). With my study group, we do about a chapter every 3 weeks (including doing all the grammar exercises!). We meet up 3 times a week, and with all of us having full time jobs, it’s harder to go at a pace faster than that it seems for us.
I like Tobira, but I find the grammar points provided per chapter to be pretty dense. I feel like Genki uses a lot simpler language than Tobira and has less overall points covered per chapter. The reading is pretty nice and the dropping of furigana as the book progresses is really nice for learning the kanji presented. Having people to study with, in real life or via the 'net, is definitely helpful! I would love to join if the timings work out and such.
I would suggest to keep using the forum because we are all here already. We could just use one big thread. Or one thread per chapter.
There is currently a group of people working through Genki and they post a separate thread for each new chapter, like the other bookclubs do it.
I would be ok either way. Having just one big thread might be easier though? We could still split it up if we see it gets too messy in one thread? What do you think?
However we do it, I hope I can keep up. But so far I‘m very much looking forward to it
An easy to remember schedule might be nice too? E.g. a new chapter starts every second Monday or something like that. What do you think?
I think one thread per chapter is a great idea - people can go back and refer to earlier posts if theyre not yet caught up. One chapter per two weeks is a great idea, its a bit more doable I think.
I’ll make a new thread on the first and the fifteenth of every month, for the first and the second chapter of each month.
Ill start a new thread today for chater one, and then for the second on the 15th.
Man, now i feel like it’s a waste to let Tobira sit on my shelf any longer now that there will be a study group for it. Here’s hoping i don’t get lazy slogging through it, like i done with Genki 1&2 a while back.
Oh awesome, thank you so much for making the thread! Ready for it! Might as well commit!! Is anyone planning on doing the workbook or only the textbook?
