I’ve been studying the language for 10 years, and I’m confident in my advanced proficiency as a second-language learner. While obtaining the N1 certificate may not directly enhance my career, I think I might enjoy the challenge of pursuing it. However, the cost (around $100) is significant, and it would also require time and focus, especially considering other commitments in my life. So, should I take the N1, or is it better to prioritize other things? I’m trying to decide.
Take a practice test online and see how you do. If you pass, take the real thing
You seem to have a pretty good grasp on the situation so there’s not much I can tell you.
Is the N1 worth it? Only you can answer that. You say the pursuit might be fun, so why not just try perusing it and then stop if you wanna stop? Only you’ll know if the enjoyment from perusing it is worth the sacrifices
My exact thought - it kinda feels like you’ve already decided, OP, and you’re just looking to us to validate your decision. If the challenge of it is the main point in favour, maybe it’s worth challenging yourself by reading a book in Japanese instead. You wouldn’t get a certificate afterwards, to be sure, but it costs less and there’s no time pressure beyond what you apply yourself.
It’s fun for me and $100 isn’t the end of the world if you have studied for it or understand the contents easily. I’ve only ever passed the N3, but it’s still cool I have it so if people ask I still have that under my belt.
i kinda wanna sign up for jlpt n5 but idk if i really wanna commit to study grammar and kanji for like, for real this time lmao
id fail if i took it rn
plus i don’t really know how the jlpt works and id need to be driven to either boston or NYC just to take a test that i paid for…
You probably need to straighten out your routine and just (frankly) need to grow up a bit before you consider starting paying for or doing anything to do with the JLPT. Not saying the N5 is anything special. Just judging from how and what you post, you have a lot to figure out before you can start seriously considering it.
when is the jlpt this year like December?
and as far as my routine, i know a lot more then i say lmao, i just like trolling a little bit
thanks though for your advice
At least you appear to be generally cordial, even though it tends to come across as flippancy, it’s far better than being retaliatory or vindictive.
That said, I do mostly agree with WaniTsunami’s conclusion.
People who have seen some of your other posts and can read between the lines will end up interpreting this as you saying “I think I know a lot more than I say,” which, whether true or not, only ends up serving to lessen your credibility. This is not an attempt to start a fight, but just an observation that you can decide to take into consideration or not.
yes i understand, i was just wondering if it would even be worth signing up for this year or should i just wait out for another year lmao
i do not with to start a fight
There’s a general JLPT thread where you can ask these questions! There’s a thread for each level so maybe directing your questions into the JLPT N5 thread will be a better use of time rather than asking these questions on a thread aimed at whether or not to take the N1.
i didnt even see the 1 LMAO sorry, thank youu
No worries! We have a really great community group here and there’s many threads and topics around here which can get a bit confusing. If you have any questions it’s good to take a look via the search bar to see if that question or a similar situation has come up before.
This will help a lot as many people who have been here a while can get exhausted from answering the same questions over and over, especially in a thread aimed at a different question. Good luck with your JLPT studies in the future!
as an aside . . .
I think you would like the POLL thread as they’re pretty friendly and crazy in there. It’s a very good place to make friends around here without worrying about interrupting a more serious conversation. They also love emojis there and ofc anime and they make lots of polls about random things. Also the campfire category is a great place to make friends and have lots of conversation. I suggest taking a look around there!
The Japanese Language section has a lot of people who have been studying for years and years and have put serious thought into their responses to people’s questions. I would call this the business side of the wanikani community. Any comment that can seem flippant or not useful to the conversation can be perceived as being rude to the original poster who is asking for genuine advice/help regarding the language. A common understanding of this area is that if you don’t have something to add as genuine advice or knowledge it can be wasting the time of the OP and others who are trying to help. The categories of wanikani are color coded too as a way to help separate them, so keeping that in mind going forward should be a bit helpful I think?
Back on topic, I think this is the part that piqued my interest
Have you tried for the N2? Or do you not have any interest in it? I agree with others who said take a practice test and see how you do on it. If you’ve never taken the JLPT before it would be jarring to head into it and you could possibly end up having a bad time if you’re not prepared for the way it is set up.
You could also just dip your foot in the waters of seeing about how it would go. Who’s to say you have to take the test now? You can just start preparing and as soon as you have that 余裕 to drop the $100 on it then you would be prepared and ready for it whenever.
はい〜
i always use the poll theard more then others cause i find em more fun, ive limited myself to not really talking outside of it tbh cause i can get passive aggression when i type and then like mini fights happen
and yea I’ve already done that so, its all taken care of, I’m just talking in wk cause i got muted from bunpro
I would take care not to get muted here too Many people use wanikani and bunpro so if what was happening on bunpro wasn’t appreciated (granted I do not know what you did) it might be received the same way here so please be careful and keep the community guidelines in mind
no i didnt really to anything crazy on bunpro, just i like didn’t sleep for days and it messed everything up annd i got too problematic so i had to like fix myself lmao
and yea, i plan on not getting muted here that’s why I’m just chilling in the poll forum from now on
