Day 154 of daily study!
Hi everyone! Reporting in with an update on the last 4 weeks. You didn’t think I gave up, did you?
Spoilers: I did maintain daily study, but with minimal effort. Focusing on only WaniKani during week 2 and 3 of my absence.
As I don’t use bunpro to learn new grammar (just for the SRS on what I learnt with Genki).. I might have forgotten to turn on vacation mode and returned to 300 reviews, oopsie.
Day 127 - Day 133
What I learnt
- Short forms in quoted speech “they said…” (と言っていました)
- “Please don’t…” (~ないで下さい)
- Turning verbs into nouns
- Genki Lesson 9 vocab
WaniKani and Genki went well this week
WaniKani
My Monday morning reviews set me up for a great week!
On Tuesday I did only 5 lessons, Thursday and Friday only 10 to lower my reviews a little in anticipation for my travel.
But oh boy, did I have an amazing WaniKani week, great accuracy and time just flew by doing my reviews. Is learning kanji getting easier?
How am I level 10 already? It feels like I was level 2 and confused about on’yumi and kun’yumi yesterday.
Genki
Finishing all lesson 8 workbook exercises feels amazing!
They are definitely picking up in difficulty now. Mainly “translate this sentence” which usually is something that implements multiple grammar points, not only the new ones.
I actually like those the most.
Goals for next week
I am not setting new goals for the next two weeks. It’s all about maintaining and maybe (big maybe) doing a small amount of new lessons. And keeping some daily WaniKani going.
Total study amount: 538 min / 9 hours
Day 134 - Day 140
Minimal effort WaniKani to maintain daily study. 10-30 daily reviews; 5 lessons total.
Total study amount: 104 minutes
Day 141 - Day 147
Minimal effort WaniKani to maintain daily study. Turned on vacation mode between reviews. 10-20 daily reviews. No lessons.
Total study amount: 51 minutes
Day 148 - Day 154
Getting back into proper studying
WaniKani
On Friday I returned to my daily 0/0, doing 15 lessons daily. Sunday I did 5 extra lessons containing only kanji to speed up my progress a bit. Before my travels I leveled up every 12 days and I want to get back to that if possible.
Bunpro
On Saturday I started tackling my 300+ reviews which I finished on Sunday. Accuracy in the high 80s which is pretty bad compared to what it was before. It was to be expected.
Genki
On Sunday I had a look at previous grammar to determine what I forgot and rearrange my grammar flashcards, turns out I remembered the grammar way better than expected.
Vocab
Did some vocab with my 300+ bunpro reviews and surprisingly forgot more of the older than the newer one. Will do a big vocab test next week and rearrange my flash cards.
Goals for next week
- Review all vocab
- Review Genki lesson 9
- Finish Genki lesson 9
- Start Genki lesson 10
Total study amount: 263 min / 4.3 hours
Total study amount since beginning: 241 hours
Rambling about the last 4 weeks
Vacation mode
In the end vacation mode was a life safer. I was apprehensive about using it, but I’m glad I didn’t get back home to a pile of 1000+ reviews.
I still wanted to do at least something everyday so I decided to do some reviews in the mornings and turn on vacation mode afterwards.
This way I would come home to 150 reviews, which is easy to tackle and get back to my daily 0/0 habit.
Getting back into WaniKani after vacation mode was definitely a little harder and my accuracy was in the 80s rather than my usual 90s but that was to be expected.
Study supplies
Being on the final lessons of Genki 1 I decided to purchase Genki 2 textbook and workbook as a little motivation boost.
As I have mentioned plenty of times before I always tend to stall on learning grammar but my initial goal was to be done with Genki 1 by the end of May.
When making these goals I did not know that I will travel so I will have to pick up my pace a little.
I also purchased A Sign of Affection in order to participate in the next absolute beginner book club, starting in June.
I find keeping up with threads a bit difficult, so I hope I will manage as this is my first time with the absolute beginner book club.
