The meonic for dosn't make much sense

The memonic for the word 差し上げるmay be the wrong word?

“The reading is 差す and 上げる put together, both hopefully words you know okay by now.”

it seems like ‘差し1. between (e.g. two people); face to face’ maybe the word used here and not 差す?

Thanks

差し itself comes from 差す. It’s the 連用形 of 差す.

One of the meanings of 差す is to hold up. 上げる also means to raise.

So you are holding up / raising something to offer it. Metaphorically anyway. This is a 謙譲語 (けんじょうご, humble) verb, so you are raising it up to the listener who is higher in social status.
