The Intermediate Manga Club (IMC) // Reading next: ニコラのおゆるり魔界紀行1

That sounds pretty fun!

(Trying to ignore the discussion about a possible new club, because I’m already like 50% over-clubbed)

In other news: Bookwalker has all(?) volumes of our new pick アンリの靴 on sale for 70% off. So, if you haven’t got it yet, now might be a good time to click my affiliate link and fund my club addiction or check if the platform of your choice has something similar.

Perfect, I hadn’t bought it yet! Enjoy the 3 coins or whatever that gives you :smiling_face_with_tear:

Assuming I catch a Bookwalker full-volume trial of 2-3 weeks, how many volumes would be sensible? (And maybe also purchasing more later or after trial ends.)

Maybe also assuming club members have too much reading time that character count isn’t the biggest issue. (A bigger issue would be difficulty.)

There is also Kindle Unlimited or Bookwalker 読み放題 that could make some series free for much longer.

I think it depends on free time, difficulty and manga itself. Last week I discovered that I can read Ojisama to neko 3 volumes/a day. It’s a 17 level manga, where not much’s going on in one volume, and I had some days off. Yomi no tsugai (level 25, densely packed with events) I can read in two days if I have time or in a week usually.
I think Fast Intermediate Book Club would be a very small group, but I really like this idea! I would’ve loved to read some ABBC and BBC picks, but the pace is killing me

Yeah two~three days per volume below level 25 is a reasonable average for me without becoming uncomfortable. It’s not just a matter of language proficiency frankly, I just have a finite stamina for reading manga before it gets tedious.

I’m in too many clubs but racing to read before the trial is over is exactly the kind of challenge that gets me excited :joy:

Short notice manga book club?

Maybe it could be a group of willing
If something becomes free they could be notified and if more than one person wants to read it than the next day a book club starts. One thread per volume, several threads could be created shortly. People could go faster or slower and comment later. To set all of this up is a lot of work already :see_no_evil_monkey:

If it’s meant to be short lived, a single thread is probably sufficient, then people can spoiler their comment with the chapter number they’re at.

Now it has a name, resistance is futile

I think it would be too chaotic
And some people may be reading much later

I honestly don’t really see much difference chaos-wise between having one thread per volume or one thread for all volumes, people will still go at different paces and will want to react to specific chapter whenever they get there.

The granular chapter structure of most manga makes it super easy to see if a comment is ahead or behind you too, so I don’t see much of an issue as long as everybody uses “details” tags correctly.

And while it’s possible that people will read much later, my understanding is that the concept is to do a quick one-off thing when a certain manga series has free volumes on bookwalker, in which case I don’t think it’s worth it to have a very structured format, unless people then decide to switch to a long-term club format once the promotion has ended.

Sometimes it has to be challenging enough. I remember for my first VN, I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to read 5k everyday, so I challenged myself to read 10k a day :face_with_steam_from_nose: (and it worked)

I’m that person that have caught up with some old book clubs and have read the threads. It’s not so fun to find comments for the first chapter in the end of a second volume.
Even if it’s a quick one-time thing, the threads will still be there for future readers.

At the end of the day it’s an issue with Discourse lacking proper threading…

Now to sit and wait for the first 30 volumes of Detective Conan to be free again.

Who wouldn't want to speed-run through this?

Hahaha now that’s a good challenge! I’d join!

Haha I’ve only recently gotten more fun money, so I’m always reading the temporarily free-to-read manga to save money :joy:. A lot of them are recurring, so there is value in separating them by volume for people reading the next time a series becomes free to read. I can see it becoming a resource even for newbies who have bought the volumes and are reading them at their own pace outside of the more structured book clubs.

The home club thread would become very long very fast, I’m sure, because of differing interests and how many different series are free to read at any one time. Sounds like my kind of chaos :joy:

アンリの靴 has started!

As it is scheduled to run for 7 weeks, we’ll have the next poll on October 11th.
Feel free to nominate anything before that, 2 spots available! (still seriously considering to nominate GTO here, I read the free preview on bookwalker and thought it was pretty funny)
