If we base ourselves on the other club rules, I’d go for the same as ABC - less than 10% of votes, but I agree that maybe 3 rounds is also too little. Perhaps less than 10% of votes for 5 rounds?
I do feel that it’s good to have some kind of rule - I believe that people didn’t take the last nomination spot not because there were not enough suggestions, but rather because there are too many options, and they don’t want to be the ones to take the last spot (more than the ABBC and the BBC, I believe there is a huge range of material that fits the difficulty level of the IMC).
Yes, that’s my impression as well. So in that sense, eliminating a few options now will let people make new nominations. Personally I think anywhere from 10-20% for eliminations is fine. We could always give people more votes too instead of changing the elimination rules.
No book is eliminated just yet from the list of nomination, waiting to see if the discussion continues and if we agree on something, otherwise I’ll make a new poll with the different options discussed.
I’m fine with the rule as it is even though some interesting manga are necessarily going to get kicked out. Clearly most of these lower books have a very small change of ever getting picked because there’s no shortage of very good, very popular intermediate manga that will keep getting nominated.
The IMC may well end up being one of the most selective clubs because we target a very popular segment with a huge quantity of high profile entries with very broad appeal. It’s really stacked.
That being said since we vote so often here the churn will be real. We’ll need a steady stream of nominations to keep things going…
Agreed. And there’s no reason that independent book clubs can’t form for series that have left the poll. I’m rather excited about the rapid churn of choices, I find that I’m looking for nomination possibilities more often as I scroll Natively.
I’m against the policy because two of my nominations are currently at risk.
That said, it kinda looks to me like nothing is at risk in this poll anyway, regardless of whether we keep the cutoff as-is or lower it. Raising it would be a different matter, though. (Think almost half the list would be cut right now if we raised the cutoff to 20%, though that’s just eyeballing - I haven’t done a detailed check.)
海月姫 and ちびまる子ちゃん scored under 15% for the first two polls, meaning they would have been at risk at this one, but both managed to climb the rankings instead.
ふたつのスピカ, 棺担ぎのクロ and ご注文はうさぎですか all scored under 15% in the first and third polls, but did marginally better in the second (scoring 15%, 17% and 15% respectively)
かぐや様は告らせたい and 理系が恋に落ちたので証明してみた scored under 15% for the second and third polls, meaning they’re in danger of being eliminated next time.
NANA and ミステリと言う勿れ dropped below 15% for the first time in the third poll, so they’ve got two polls of breathing room.
If we drop the cutoff to 10%, this list changes to:
ちびまる子ちゃん in the first and second polls
ご注文はうさぎですか? in the first and third polls
理系が恋に落ちたので証明してみた in the second and third polls
棺担ぎのクロ in the third poll only
Ya know, every time I scroll up this thread to re-check the poll, I keep seeing this image again, and every time I see this image, it reminds me of this image:
Agreed. It would really surprise me if potential for new nominations had really dried up, especially considering how fast we got up to 20 nominations when the club started and how high the interest for the club is currently.
The elimination policy is there to remove options from the poll that are unlikely to win in future polls to give a chance for new nominations. I feel like we should discuss changing it when we realize it’s removing too much or too little, but making it weaker at 19/20 (now 18/20, I guess) nominations with only 2 manga even at risk in the next poll feels a bit premature.
It might help people feel less regret over eliminating options if it’s made clear that renominations are ok (maybe after a suitable cooldown). If you’re worried something won’t win now but might on the 11th poll or something, that should help?
Maybe if people are worried about eliminating stuff leaving too few options, it’s worth putting stuff that doesn’t make the threshold repeatedly on a “bumpable”, where by default they’ll be included on the next poll, but can be pushed out by new nominations on a first in first out basis.
First idea sounds good to me. Second sounds too complicated. I think there are enough manga to pick from that we’ll consistently get new nominations, so I don’t think we’ll run into a “too few options” situation.
I have no idea if there is an official template, but the easiest way to start is probably to take any club thread you personally like and use that as a template. At least that what did for my first ABBC, and then I just kept copying my own book clubs.
(Also, feel free to ask any questions you have about this whole book club running thing.)
It’s really useful if you end up leading a book club but can also be used if you see someone do some fancy formatting and want to see how it’s done, or if they have a nice template for something you want to reuse, or an image, anything!
