Is Detective Conan easy to read for beginner?
It’s extremely dense. I would say around N3 you can start tackling it but I wouldn’t expect it to go super smoothly until you internalise a lot of detective/mystery vocab. Also the early volumes have awful scan quality so it’s harder to read some kanji than it should be.
I have the feeling, that I will need at least 2 more years of studying to be able to read anything.
Keep your expectations low and start with something you’re already familiar with. Even if you go very slowly and only understand a portion of what you’re reading, it can be very valuable practice.
Reading Japanese will feel like solving riddles at first, there’s no way around it.
Purrecisely the two series I am reading! ![]()
I quite agree – it is a good example!
As you can see, nothing really hard, and it has furigana too! ![]()
I think the problem with very dense manga for beginners is that it can be demotivating to progress very slowly. You can easily spend half an hour on this single page if you’re just starting to read Japanese.
I would spend longer on an easier manga as a beginner, due to sentences full of contractions and slang. I suspect that this might feel easier (with Mokuro and ichi.moe)
Yeah slang and contractions are by far the trickier things with that type of content, unfortunately. Especially since it’s usually not the focus of traditional textbooks. It can’t really be avoided if you want to read manga however…
That would be a lot
Good thing it’s only 4万9千円
What’s a digest?
I think it just has some Highlights of the series.
Well, in this case, it means
全15巻の中から、よりすぐりの名シーンを集めた無料ためし読み版。
Do you mean Grammar? How far are you already with your studies? I will repeat some Grammar points of Genki 1 on the Weekend and after that I Hope to be able to continue with Genki 2.
I mean generally – grammar, words…
Well, I keep finding a lot of words I didn’t previously know, but furigana makes looking them up to be quite easy…
It does sometimes get a bit hard to understand, when someone with an accent appears, but nevertheless I’ve read 16 volumes and didn’t have too much problems anywhere so far…
Then again, I had watched the anime 10 years ago (in English), and while I have forgotten a lot, there are still some things I still remember, so it certainly helps…
Another factor is that I’m really hooked on this series, which gives me a lot of motivation… ![]()
Overall, I’d say it’s easier than any book that doesn’t have furigana. But that’s a subjective opinion ![]()
Genki 1 and 2 will give you a good base but if you read content aimed at native speakers (as opposed to graded readers) you’ll encounter all sorts of constructs you’ll have to look up. This is unavoidable and also a bit annoying because looking up grammar is trickier than looking up vocab since you may not know what you’re looking for exactly. Bunpro can be a good resource for that (you have access to all their lessons without paying, you just won’t be able to use the SRS features).
I certainly wouldn’t recommend starting with Conan however, unless you really love this series and that motivates you to try it. Go have a look at the Absolute Beginner Book Club for more accessible content for instance. You can also ask other people for help in those clubs which can be useful.
First volume of キノコ犬 seems to be temporarily available for free:
But it is certainly harder than Conan, because it doesn’t have furigana ![]()
I’m considering buying the life time Abo during the next sale. A year ago Bunpro was too hard for me but I think now that I’ve already learned for a year it might be easier to use.
They should have a sale this month. I bought lifetime last year during this time and it made a huge difference for me ![]()
