But we already talked about Mana⦠![]()
Tl;dr In Europe, Mystic Quest was the name used for the first game in the Mana series.
In the USA, Mystic Quest was the name used for the game called Final Fantasy USA in Japan and Final Fantasy Legend in Europe.
Of course in the US, Final Fantasy Legend was the name of the first game in the SaGa seriesā¦
(If you thought the ff3/6 thing was badā¦)
i specifically said final fantasy usa ![]()
itās for the super nintendo, and is probably my favourite game ever ![]()
I know, I couldnāt leave a chance to bash early Squareās naming practices alone though!
I donāt understand the implication of calling it āFinal Fantasy USAā in Japanese⦠Iāll have to give it a try I suppose.
Are there guns? ![]()

I was imagining an FF1-style party in the world of GTA Vice City. Masamune is a sniper rifle. Cid deals in stolen cars. There are chocobos for some reason.
You know⦠Iād play thatā¦
yāknow⦠now that i know the series was originally based on d&d, it really doesnāt make sense that they thought americans wouldnāt understand how to play
Added my name to the list. Seeing the table laid out like that, Iām very tempted to hop on FF11 and be the first person with a checkmark⦠I do own it, but like, l o l.
I finished transcribing what I expect will be week 1 of FF3. I end up at nearly 4k characters, but almost all of that is optional and itās a nice little self-contained arc so I donāt want to break it across multiple weeks.
I may do a double-week to give people more time to get into it though, since thereās also the new job system to get used to.
Iām pretty excited to play this one with the club to be honest, itās starting to really feel like a āproperā Final Fantasy in terms of world building and tone.
Iām really curious to know how the DS version and the PR version compare. Not sure yet if Iāll be going back to home (as in å®å®¶) before the club start but if I do Iāll try to grab my old DS and see if itās still boots!
The beginning is likely to be the most different as your characters all have individual backstories in FF3D but are nameless warriors of light in other versions of FF3, so all the character intro stuff will be 3D exclusive
Yeah the very early content diverges quite a bit in the 3D version, but it seems that the rest of the game follows exactly the same structure so it should be possible to follow along with the club.
I suspect that the 3D version has quite a bit of extra Japanese as a result though.
FF3 is the only classic one Iāve never played, so Iām REALLY excited for it. It not having a GBA port and maybe the fact you went back to nameless characters probably put me off a bit at the time. Also not a big fan of the 3D models on the ds, I liked the sprite work of the GBA ports a lot more.
Now Iām actually looking forward to making up another party of heroes. I had a lot of fun picturing my party in FF1 week to week, and the jobs in FF3 are going to make that even more fun.
Also it seems that FF3 in particular gets a LOT of references in the FF14 plot which Iām playing at the moment, so Iām really curious to see how many more references I will be able to understand once weāve played itā¦
It does!! Iāve played both versions, 3D first. When I played 2D later I was flabbergasted by how much less dialogue there was haha.
Iāve got a soft spot for the 3D version, Iām super excited to replay and to see what everyone else thinks about FF3 in general. ![]()
Yeah, I think itās tied between FF3 and FF6 for which of the FF games has the most references in FF14.
Final Fantasy 3 (3D remake), Final Fantasy VIII Remastered and Final Fantasy IX have just landed on GoG and are on sale:
Note that this FFIX version does not seem to support Japanese.
Iām personally not too fond of the look of FFVIII Remastered but it may just be me being a purist. Steam does have the original FFVIII PC version but⦠it doesnāt support Japanese.
So to summarize the state of digital download versions of the PS1 FF games on PC as far as I know:
| Game | On Steam | On GoG | Supports Japanese |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy VII | |||
| Final Fantasy VIII (original PC version ) | |||
| Final Fantasy VIII Remastered | |||
| Final Fantasy IX |
So yeah, things get messy once we run out of the Pixel Remastersā¦
Do the Switch versions support Japanese by changing the systemās language? I was hoping for that to be the case so I could play them there.
Searching online it seems that they allowed to do it on ps4
Do the games support Japanese:
| Game | European Switch store | Japanese Switch Store |
|---|---|---|
| Final Fantasy VII | ||
| Final Fantasy VIII Remastered | ||
| Final Fantasy IX |
The Japanese version of FFIX also lists English, Spanish, French, German and Italian as being supported, so no idea why Japanese is not available in the EU version.
