# The Accidental Knock Down to Apprentice 😭

Anyone else have an experience where they knew something really well and they were about to get it to master level but then you mistype and it goes back to APPRENTICE. I just get so disappointed that I knew it but know I gotta get it back to guru.

I’ve had such situations.
Once even happened on a burn stage…
It is very frustrating, but what helped me – is to look at it from another perspective.
You didn’t _fail_ the item – you’ve _got some extra practice_ for that item.
Extra practice that would ensure that you would never forget that particular item even years after!
I hope this approach would help you feel better about it – it certainly did help me!
Also, if you really want to prevent such things from happening, there’s a special script for that. However, I don’t personally use it, because it would be very easy to abuse.
Anyway, may these frustrations not stop you from keeping studying and may you successfully reach all your Japanese goals! Best of luck with your studies!

…That is something you must learn to endure or get a script (and potentially become another script ~~ab~~ user).
I know its frustating but its either you give some extrea time to reviews or you get some items down, i do give extra time cause i am free when my review bundles come and my percentage has been near 99% because of that but i still get many wrong so…you decide 😉
And welcome to the commeownity ! 😼 You have entered the best part (according to me !) of wanikani 😁

Wierd thing is that i aslo get english wrong 😉 Maybe wanikani has the ability to make us memorize kanji in exchange for our english ability

Japanese ! I love the Humble and Respectful talk and that is the primary reason i started to like the culture 😃 but english is indespensible in today’s world so maybe i’ll have to choose english…

Very true. It gets kind of annoying when I tell people I’m learning Japanese and they’re like what would you need that for. I say to go to Japan and talk to people. But then they say something like don’t they speak English there too. But I can’t really argue with them since most Japanese people have at least a basic understanding of English because they learn it in school.😭

Not my experience. Certainly not in rural areas. A friend just went with his mother to Japan a few weeks back. His mother is japanese and could talk with his relatives. He said he felt isolated since nobody in his family spoke enough english for even basic communication. He said that’s even true for family in the 20-30 year age range and not a problem of old people only.
Sure you’ll find some japanese here and there, that probably also lived in some foreign country for a while, and that have perfect english. But they are pretty rare overall and mostly concentrated in big cities.

There is a little trick I use when I miss the right button on my phone: I don’t proceed to the next question but instead close the WaniKani Window. All Reviews that are only halfway done get put back into your Reviews box and you can do them over again. It is annoying, but when I am on a crowded train and I hit the „i" instead of the „u" for a third time, I prefer to redo it later. (However, I am so honest and knock down the words I had answered wrong for real in my first go-through on purpose. You don’t win anything by advancing words you are not actually sure on.)
But I strongly agree with trunklayer-san. Sometimes it is a surprisingly nice thing to have a familiar word show up more often again, and I usually become more familiar and comfortable with it. So if it is only one word, I recommend to just accept it.

You should ignore what other’s say regarding learning a language if that person is not profecient in it or holds some sort of experience regarding language learning. 😅

I use the Tsurukame app that has a setting to ignore typos. Allows skipping as well.

They are not, if you didn’t finish both „sides". For example: You mistype the English translation, but you haven’t done the Japanese reading of that Kanji yet. If you close the browser the card will reset.
I have only ever used this on my phone, so I don’t know if it works the same on PC.

WaniKani has some level of typo flexibility as well for the english translation. However, if you write すすめり for 進める instead of すすめる for example, they will not count that as a typo… 😅
I use both the german and the english keyboard, and the german one has the three additional keys (ü,ö,ä) so everything shifts a bit. When I do reviews on my phone in a busy environment I sometimes miss the correct one and it is a bit annoying.

They must have changed it, because in my experience if I restarted reviews even if I got both right it would still demote the item.
