Learning Japanese through pro wrestling

I hope your internet is back by now! (I hate doing anything on my phone, so whenever my internet is down I always end up just using my phone as a hotspot and then using my computer like normal…)

I got part of the way through the Summer Sun Princess translation, then stopped to work on the drawing for the TPC semifinals, since that’s more immediately plot relevant… This drawing was held on August 9.

Here’s the transcript for it, and here’s the video.

On August 9, the drawing to determine the matchups for the “12th Tokyo Princess Cup” semifinals was held at The Grand Hall in Shinagawa, Tokyo. With ring announcer Rise Shirai presiding, Miu Watanabe, Yuki Arai, Arisu Endo, and Shoko Nakajima, who had made it into the final four, each selected an envelope and drew a red or a blue piece of paper from it. As a result, the semifinals were set: Nakajima vs Miu, and Arai vs Arisu.

The transcript had: “意気込みは以下の通り”, and I’ve gotten into a habit of localizing that a bit because it’s kind of weird phrasing in English, but I had a bit of trouble doing that this time (you’ll see why later…).

They expressed their enthusiasm as follows.

Now the actual meat of this:

Arai: “We’ve had many singles matches with each other, and even a title match.”

Had a bit of trouble putting this into English: “最近だとプリンセス・オブ・プリンセスの挑戦権を懸けて最後に闘ったのが、この有栖ちゃんでもあるので.”

“Recently, in the match where the right to challenge for the Princess of Princess title was on the line, the person I fought at the end was Arisu-chan. Facing her again at a time like this… I’m scared, but also happy. This is my third time making it into the final four and participating in this drawing. But putting it the other way around, I’ve only been able to make it this far, so this year, I want to beat Arisu-chan and advance even further!”

Arisu: “I really feel like every single time, whenever it’s a crucial moment for me, Yuki Arai is there. I mean, this is my first time participating in this drawing in this tournament. It’s my first time making it into the top four. And against Yuki Arai… whom I’ve only lost to. I’ve never beaten her. I’m going to beat Yuki Arai, make it to the final, and then win the whole tournament! That’s all.”

――How do you feel about your opponent’s momentum?

Arai: “It’s amazing, isn’t it? I’ve watched her take down incredible opponents one after another in this tournament to get here. No, she’s incredible.”

Had a bit of trouble making this sound good in English: “今年の遠藤有栖、ホントに勢いも何もかもが最大のレベルに達してるんじゃないかなって見てて思うので。そんな有栖ちゃんに勝ちたいという思いが強まってます.”

“Watching Arisu Endo this year, I feel like she’s reached the highest level of momentum and everything else. My desire to beat Arisu-chan is just growing stronger and stronger.”

Arisu: “I think Yuki Arai will never lose her momentum… but I am going to put a stop to it here.”

――Did beating Miyu Yamashita give you confidence?

Arisu: “My confidence has really skyrocketed. I’m so confident, the only future I can see is one where I win.”

This was a tricky question to put into English: “そういう相手だからこそ勝利への思いは強くなっている?”

――Because this is how your opponent is, does that make your desire to win even stronger?

Arai: “Of course. I absolutely won’t lose!”

Arisu: “I’m not going to lose!”

For this next part, there were a couple of (苦笑)in the transcript that were a bit hard to translate… Normally I render these as “laughs”, but they didn’t seem to be quite a laugh this time, lol. But I didn’t know what to put that would be better…

Miu: “With the drawing this time, I’m going to face Nakajima-san… She’s really staring at me.” (laughs)

“But ever since she won the overseas belt this year, she’s been running at full speed, and her gaze is even more intense… even right at this moment. I felt her blitz through with her amazing, impossible speed in our singles match in Texas as well. And in Ota City, it was a tag match, but I experienced it in that title match. I’ve experienced all sorts of things like that, and we see each other a lot every day, and I’ve seen how much effort she puts in… she’s that kind of opponent. I never thought I’d have to fight her again this summer via the random drawing. But in our last singles match, I won.”

The プリンセス part of this was a bit tricky because it’s probably a play on the TPC or the Princess of Princess title, but “princess” outside of that context has also come up a lot lately specifically with regards to Miu, so I wasn’t sure what exactly to do with this: “私はなんとしても、この夏、プリンセスに返り咲きたいと思っているので、絶対にここで勝って進みたいと思います.”

“This summer, I’m determined to make my comeback as a princess, so I am absolutely going to win here and advance.”

And here’s where the 意気込み issue comes in… I wasn’t quite sure what to do with this: “意気込みなんかねえよ!…そうですね.”

Nakajima: “I don’t have any enthusiasm! …Let’s see. My match with Miu in Texas was pretty well-received, but it doesn’t make me happy to receive praise for a match that I lost. This time, I want to win and get praised for that. That’s all. I don’t have any enthusiasm!”

Miu: “There seems to be some…” (laughs)

――Who do you want to face in the final?

Miu: “I’ve faced Arisu in this tournament before, but I don’t think I’ve ever had a singles match with Arai-chan. So I’d like to have a singles match with Arai-chan.”

This was a bit tricky: “まとめてかかってこいって、そんな気持ちです.”

Nakajima: “I’m feeling like I wanna take 'em all on! For me, if anything, this match (vs Miu) feels more like the final.”

That’s it for the drawing.

While I'm here, here's the poster for the semifinals:

生き様で、頂を刻め。

With my way of life, I will carve my name on the summit.

(This one’s weirdly tough… I wondered if I was misreading a character or something, but as far as I can tell, this is what it says. I dunno exactly what to do with it…)

That’s smart! Mobile hotspot is one of those features that I’ve never actually used so it doesn’t make it into my mental list of available verbs as often as it should… I get a mobile plan with a minimum of data since I’m at home 95% of the time, and I’m about at the limit so it’s maybe moot now though… Currently on a brewery’s wifi on my work laptop and not the happiest I’ve ever been with my ISP… It’ll either be fixed soon or I’ll get fed up and switch, so there’s that at least!
(EDIT: it was the former!)

Not really a language correction at all, but “Because she’s your opponent” could be a tweak to make it read smoother.

Also not a language comment, but “(grimaces)” weirdly feels like it would probably fit fine, honestly…

I think it’s good as-is! Winning a “Princess” belt or “Princess” tournament is proof of being a “princess,” so the two meanings are inherently linked.

Maybe just punch up the dismissiveness, like “forget enthusiasm!” or maybe better “to hell with enthusiasm!”
Her tone and the なんか convey like - she doesn’t need any of that BS, she’s just gonna go and win.

It is weird… 頂を刻め doesn’t come up at all searching around as a phrase.
My only guesses if it was a mistake for what could have been intended are maybe 頁 (or even 1頁 and it got OCR’d) since it seems common to use 刻む with like, etching a page into the history books. Or maybe the を was meant to be a に. But those don’t seem like plausible mistakes if typing.
Anyway, your take on it seems fine.

Well, I am halfway through the July 21 Summer Sun Princess translation finally. Figured I’d save the rest for another post.

First match in this show was Himawari & Konatsu vs Uta & Shino. The main thing I remember about this one was that Konatsu’s little sheep plushie that she wears attached to her gear was holding a sunflower for this match :sob:. It was so cute… Surprisingly Himawari and Konatsu got the win despite Konatsu being so early into her career.

Sunflower & sheep comments:

HIMAWARI: “We won! I’m extremely grateful for being chosen for the opening match once again after the last one.”

This was a bit tricky to put into English: “前回は結果を残せなかった悔しさがあったので、今回こそは少しでも爪痕残してやろうと気合いが入っていたので勝てたというもあるし.”

“Last time I was disappointed that I couldn’t get results, so I was really determined to leave at least a small mark this time, and I think that’s what got me the win. This time was Konatsu’s first big show, and she was in the opening match of a big show after debuting just over a month before, so I felt that I had to take the lead… I don’t know if I was able to do it, though. How was your first big show?”

Konatsu: “It was my first big show, and the first match is really important, so even though I’d just debuted, I was really determined to get the crowd excited. HIMAWARI-san was a really reassuring presence at my side, and I think I was really able to enjoy today as much as possible.”

This was a struggle to phrase smoothly in English: “相手がアプガ組の志乃さんと汐珠ということでキャリアも近いし、そういう意味では一緒に練習を頑張っているメンバーだったというのもあって、信頼して全力をぶち当てられたというので楽しめた.”

HIMAWARI: “Since our opponents were the UUG Shino-san and Uta, whose careers are also short, that means that they’re members that I’ve been training hard with, so I could trust them and hit them with all of my strength, which made it a lot of fun.”

Konatsu: “It was so much fun.”

HIMAWARI: “I’m glad that I was able to have fun wrestling that match. Next time, it’s Konatsu’s turn to win.”

Konatsu: “That’s right. This was my first time winning as a team since my debut, so I want to win on my own next time. I’m going to use the experience I gained today as encouragement to work even harder.”

HIMAWARI: “Please keep supporting us!”

Uta and Shino’s comments:

Uta: “I lost… But when I found out that I was going to be teaming up with Shino in the opening match of a big show, I was super happy and resolved to try my best even more, but then I lost, and I was super disappointed.”

The last part of this was a bit tricky: “第1試合に出れて嬉しいも悔しいも楽しいも、いろんな感情になれるものに出会えて汐珠はよかったなって率直に思ってます!”

“Being able to participate in the first match, I experienced all sorts of emotions, happiness, disappointment—I honestly think it was good!”

Shino: “Getting to be part of the opening match this time made me really happy, same as Uta, but since I’ve been with Uta for a ridiculously long time, when we fight together, whenever she tags out, the expression in her eyes that says ‘I’m going to do it!’ is so cool and reassuring. Even though we lost, watching her from my position at her side, I thought she’s just so cool, and I feel like we just can’t lose. We’re friends, after all.”

This was also a bit tricky to put into English:

汐珠 汐珠はいつか東日本だけじゃなくて日本全国、志乃さんのバスに乗って、バスツアーをして、プロレス旅したいです、一緒に。

Uta: “Someday, I want to go all over Japan, not just to Eastern Japan, riding on Shino-san’s bus, a bus tour, a pro wrestling trip together.”

Shino: “I’m glad, about the pro wrestling.” (laughs)

Uta: “Thank you very much.”

Then the match where Max The Impaler sadly had to get replaced with another wrestler, so they brought in… Kyoko Inoue?? This was her first time wrestling in TJPW. She teamed up with Pom against Raku and Andreza Giant Panda. I thought this match was a lot of fun, and I really enjoy seeing veteran wrestlers doing TJPW comedy lol. It was also fun to see Pom in Inoue’s makeup.

Pom and Inoue’s comments (just noticed that shupro refers to her as 京子 and not 井上, which is a bit unexpected… For once, I’m using a wrestler’s surname while shupro uses her given name lol):

This was a bit tricky: “違うの。ずっと助けにいこうと思ったの。だけどこう(おやすみポーズ)されて、気づいたら負けてた…”

Kyoko: “No. I fully intended to back her up the whole time. But then this happened” (she does the oyasumi pose) “and before I knew it, we’d lost…”

Pom: “Wait! When you woke up, we’d already lost!?”

Kyoko: “I’m sorry.” (laughs)

Pom: “You didn’t see me trying my best!?”

Kyoko: “I didn’t. That girl did this to me…” (she does the oyasumi pose)

Pom: “And you dozed off after that… What kind of dream did you have?”

Kyoko: “I don’t remember what I dreamed.” (laughs)

Pom: “Huh!?”

Kyoko: “Sorry. We’ll win the next one. Next time, I won’t let her put me to sleep.”

I really struggled with translating the onomatopoeia in this: “ペチャペチャになって、京子さんの見てない間にメチャクチャ頑張ったんですよ!” Ended up having to resort to my print onomatopoeia dictionary, because the 2-3 definitions that kept coming up in digital dictionaries didn’t seem to make much sense, and sure enough, my dictionary had a 4th one that seemed like a better fit (“押しつぶされたり、しなびたりして平らになるさま”).

Pom: “I got squashed flat, and while Kyoko-san wasn’t watching, I really hung in there! Next time, I’ll absolutely show you my cool side.”

Kyoko: “Then, I’m also going to get squashed flat, and I’m also going to persevere!”

Had a bit of trouble with this: “本当にメイクとか試合直前に「いいですか?」ってやらせてくれてこんな風になりました.”

“She had us do the makeup right before the match, like, ‘Can I?’, and it turned out like this. Thank you very much. I’m sorry we lost.”

Raku and Andreza’s comments:

Raku: “Thank you, Panda-san! I slept with Panda-san today. How long did you sleep?”

Had a bit of trouble translating バッチリ again (as well as a bit later on): “アンドレザ、何時間寝たの?(耳打ちされて)10時間以上寝てきたからバッチリだって.”

Ossan Tiger: “Andreza, how long did you sleep?” (Andreza whispers in his ear) “‘I slept for over ten hours, so I’m all set.’ That’s what he said.”

Raku: “Pandas spend more than half of the day sleeping, so he’s like me.”

Ossan: “We’ve been in Tokyo since yesterday, and he got to play with Raku-san, so his condition is in tip-top shape.”

Raku: “Tip-top shape! Thank you, Panda-san. Let’s sleep together again!”

Ossan: (Panda whispers in his ear) “He wants to team up again. Let’s do it again!”

Raku: “Thank you! Alright, let’s go to sleep! Let’s eat bamboo and go to sleep!”

Then there was a rookie team (Wakana, Toga, Mifu, Kira) vs the oddball team of Yuna Manase, Mahiro, Kaya, and Chika. Surprisingly, the rookies actually came out on top in this one, with Wakana pinning Chika for the win.

Rookies’ comments:

Uehara: “We won! We pulled it off somehow.”

Toga: “We won.”

Uehara: “How was it, Kira?”

Kira: “I don’t have words. It was great.” (to Uehara) “You worked hard.”

Ashida: “We had good teamwork.”

This was a bit tricky to put into English: “誰一人の力が欠けても意外と危うかったんじゃないかなと思って.”

“I think if any one of us had been lacking in strength, it would’ve gone worse than expected. I think we were able to demonstrate good teamwork.”

This was also a bit tricky: “私とキラはパワー系で、わかなさんと美歩さんは柔軟というか、メッチャいい感じで。それぞれが同じだけど別のところもあって、自分に持ってないものをパワー系のキラが補ってくれた気がして.”

Toga: “Kira and I are power types, and Wakana-san and Mifu-san are really flexible, which meshed well. We each have similar qualities but also different ones, and Kira, who’s a power type that can do things that I can’t, seemed to make up for what I lacked.”

Uehara: “At the end, sparks were really flying between you and Manase-san, huh?”

Toga: “We didn’t face each other at all today, so I’d like to do a singles match with her next time.”

Uehara: “When I joined, Manase-san had already graduated, so our time here didn’t overlap at all. Today, with all the '23 and '24 debuts, I think we were able to show Manase-san the new faces in TJPW. There are lots of others from the class of '23 and '24, so I hope we’ll be able to encourage each other and do our best together!”

Yuna & friends comments:

Manase: “It’s frustrating!”

This was tricky: “久しぶりに東京女子に帰ってきてさ、私、東京女子を離れて修行に出ようと思った時にもっと強くなって驚異的な存在になって、もっと刺激的な女になって、外に出たのね.”

“I returned to TJPW for the first time in a long time, and when I decided to leave TJPW and train apart from this place, I wanted to become a stronger, more astounding and more exciting woman, so I left to go elsewhere. I thought after winning the belt yesterday that I’d gotten stronger, but since I wasn’t able to help my teammates, I must still be weak, so I’m going to work hard to get stronger so that I’ll be able to meet everyone again, so please wait for me!”

Mahiro: “We’ll get stronger, too!”

Had a bit of trouble with the tone of all of this. They say it with a lot of passion, so I feel like my translations should probably be punched up somehow…

Manase: “Let’s get stronger together! Then, I was going to close with, ‘Let’s go!’ ‘Yes!’ ‘Ganbare, TJPW!’, but since this is the TJPW summer festival, the three TJPW people are going to close it properly!”

Mahiro: “The summer of TJPW never ends!”

All: “Yes!”

Manase: “Anything to say?”

Toribami: “This year, we’re going to work even harder and more passionately!”

Chika: “We’ll make this summer even hotter!”

Manase: “Mahiro, bring it to a close!”

Mahiro: “I’m going to work hard so that I won’t lose to Manase-san going forward, either! Prepare yourself!”

Then there was a fun 3-way tag match between Venyu, Airsu & Jada Stone, and Haru & Yuki Aino. Haru and Yuki had an extremely nerdy entrance and showed up in Kamen Rider gear along with (according to a friend of mine) the Kamen Rider OOO theme. So I was rooting for Venyu, but couldn’t really complain when Haru and Yuki won with the power of Kamen Rider.

YukiHaru’s comments:

Yuki: “YukiHaru won the 3-way tag match!”

Haru: “We did it!”

Yuki: “Yay! I’m going to rest for a bit. Haru, talk to them.”

Haru: “This was my first 3-way tag match, so there were so many things I didn’t understand, and I didn’t know what to do.”

This was a bit tricky to translate: “メッチャ、かみーゆに翻弄されてたやん.”

Yuki: “Kamiyu totally messed with you.”

Haru: “But since I had Yuki-san right there beside me, I had no doubt that I’d be able to do it, so I’m glad.”

Yuki: “Yay! I’m so happy right now. Haru and I also teamed up for the big show in March. At the time, she said a whole bunch of negative things, and it worried me, but now she’s saying positive things, so I’m really happy, and I’m glad that I get to stand beside Haru as she continues to grow. I’m so happy. I also want to grow so that she doesn’t outdo me there.”

For some reason, I had a bit of trouble coming up with a good way to word the 引き寄せた parts of this: “ただ今日、VENYUもジェイダ&有栖もバカ強かったので、私たちが今日勝てたのは私たちが引き寄せた幸運だから、これを私たちはポジティブなパワーでもっともっと引き寄せていこう!”

“But today, VENYU and Jada & Arisu were crazy strong, so the fact that we were able to beat them today is because of the luck we’ve drawn. Let’s use the power of positive thinking to draw even more luck!”

Haru: “Yes!”

This was also a bit tricky: “そして勝った後にハルが駆け寄ってくれるような距離感になりたいです!(苦笑) ありがとう!”

Yuki: “And I want us to be close enough that Haru runs over to me right after I win!” (laughs) “Thanks!”

Venyu’s comments:

Kamifuku: “Good work.”

Localized this a bit: “お疲れ様じゃないよ!このギャラ泥棒!”

VENY: “It’s not ‘good work’! I want my booking fee back!”

This was a bit tricky (it’s always Kamiyu…):

上福 いや本当に。

Kamifuku: “No, really.”

VENY: “What do you mean?”

Kamifuku: “I wanted to win without trouble.”

VENY: “Well, I don’t hate it. But I’m a force to be reckoned with outside of TJPW.”

Kamifuku: “Yeah, that’s true. You’re terrifying.”

VENY: “Damn right. Terrifying.”

Kamifuku: “My mouth hurts. That misfired Big Boot of yours. That hurt.”

VENY: “Come to think of it, VENYU loses every time, don’t we?”

This was a bit tricky: “VENYが横にいて負けるっていうのはちょっと大丈夫? 8年やって、私が10年やって.”

“Losing with me at your side, is that really okay? You’ve been doing this for 8 years, and I’ve been doing it for 10.”

This was confusing because neither of their birthdays are in August, so I assume they were referring to their tag team? Which also isn’t technically correct (their first tag match together was in October 2021). So I have no idea… The rest of the exchange was also a bit confusing.

Kamifuku: “That’s right. August is like our birthday, right?”

VENY: “I only get invited here about once a year, you know. There are belts here, right? Belts.”

See You!

Kamifuku: “Belts, right, yeah. I’ll definitely make arrangements for you. Let’s go to Omotesando. Oh, or Ginza! We’ll go to Ginza to get the belts.” (in English) “See you!”

Arisu and Jada’s comments were mostly in English:

Arisu: “Ah… Sorry, Jada!”

Jada: “No, no it’s okay! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!” (she hugs Arisu)

Arisu: “Thank you…”

Jada: “Fighter! Strong!”

Arisu: (in Japanese) “I don’t like 3-way matches! Singles or tag, I don’t like ‘em! They’re difficult!” (in English to Jada) “Difficult!”

Jada: “I had so much fun! I love working with Arisu, thank you so, so much! Thank you!”

Arisu: “My friend!” (crying and hugging her)

Jada: “My friend! But I kinda feel bad I let her down, I wasn’t there for her. And so next time, I will be. And I’m so sorry. But, we’ll get it done next time!”

Arisu: “Next time.”

Jada: “Next time!”

Then Emi Sakura and Chris Brookes teamed up against Itoh and El Desperado, which is a team I would’ve liked a lot better before the whole debacle with Despy retweeting transphobic garbage… It was still pretty surreal seeing the NJPW Junior Heavyweight Champion getting booked in TJPW, of all places. Next time they should give us Hiromu or something.

I didn’t watch the match too closely due to Despy’s inclusion. I liked Emi and Chris’s entrance, though.

Emi and Chris’s comments:

This was a bit tricky: “伊藤とデスペラードは、入場10割って言ったよね? あんたたちが10割出すって言うから、私だって10割出そうと思ったのよ。試合のゴングが鳴ったら…なんなの? 10割出せてないってことじゃないの。こんなのね、この試合に勝者ははじめから生まれないのよ。でもそんななかから勝利をつかんだのは私だけよ.”

Sakura: “Itoh and Desperado said they’d give it 100% for their entrance, right? Since they said they would give 100%, I thought I’d give 100%, too. When the bell rang to start the match… what gives? You weren’t giving 100%, were you? This kind of thing, there’s no winner right from the get-go. Well, I’m the only one who could snatch victory from such a situation. Itoh, Despy, you’re nothing in the grand scheme of things. And Chris, you’re nothing, either. A baby. OHOHOHO!” (She hits Chris on the head, then goes backstage. Chris follows Sakura without saying a word.)

Itoh and Despy’s comments:

Itoh: “Hey… we lost!”

Despy: “I’m sorry. I should’ve backed you up more…”

Itoh: “Come and help me! Of course I couldn’t move after taking that hit!”

Despy: “Certainly. Their fighting strength was greater than I expected.”

Itoh: “That’s right! But our entrance was totally awesome!”

Despy: “Really?”

Itoh: “I saw it. We were totally coordinated. You did really well; it was amazing! I really think it’s amazing.” (she stares at his belt) “You’re the Junior Heavyweight Champion, and you also make for a splendid idol. Next time, I hope we can have another match with the NEO Itoh Respect Army, which originally included Chris Brookes, and I also want us to make our CD debut.”

Despy: “…CD.” (laughs)

Itoh: “Because we’re idols. You’re also a fine idol!”

Despy: “I was an idol, too, wasn’t I?”

Itoh: “You shined so bright.”

Despy: “Thank you very much.”

Itoh: “I look forward to working with you next time. Thank you very much!”

Despy: “I’m looking forward to it! Next time, I’ll do everything I can to ensure that the match ends with Itoh-chan getting her hand raised.”

Itoh: “Thank you very much. I want us to use everything we’ve got so that I can win. Our entrance was good, so it’s alright. Thank you very much. Keep doing your best from here, and I’ll do my best, too!”

Despy: “Thank you very much! I will put my utmost effort into it! Now excuse me.”

Itoh: “Then I’ll excuse myself, too. Let’s practice our dance again.”

Despy: “…I’ll do my best!”

Then Miyu faced Billie Starkz, which was a match I had a hard time watching… A spot fairly early on kind of scared me, and then I got too stressed out and had too much trouble watching the rest of it… I was glad to see Miyu win, though (I’d been a bit worried that Billie’s upcoming title match in AEW might’ve forced the booking hand here, but thankfully that wasn’t the case. Especially since she lost the AEW match anyway).

Miyu’s comments:

Parts of this were kinda tough: “今日は3カ月ぶりに東京女子のリングに戻ってきてアメリカにいるときから、今回3カ月だったんですけど、ビリーとツアー回ってるんじゃないかというくらい本当にずっとビリーと一緒にいて、闘ったり組んだりしてるときもどっちの時間もすごい子だなって、ビリーがいま21か20くらいなんですけど。14歳のときから来てるんですよ。そのときからすごくて、いまAEWでもすごい活躍してるレスラーなんで、私も刺激をもらいながら日々闘ってましたけど、今回シングルマッチできて、めちゃくちゃ楽しかったですけど、やっぱりヤバイヤツだなと思いました。予想してないところから予想してないことをやられるんで、めっちゃ狂ってるなと思ったけど、狂おしいというか狂ってるところを感じるとめちゃくちゃ試合してて楽しいんで.”

Yamashita: “Today I returned to the TJPW ring for the first time in three months. Since I’ve been in the U.S., even though it’s been three months, I’ve been together with Billie so much that it feels like I was on tour with her. Whether we’re fighting or teaming up, no matter how we’re spending the time, she’s an amazing kid. Billie is like 21 or 20 now, but she’s been coming since she was 14, and she’s been amazing ever since; she’s a wrestler doing great work in AEW right now, so I, too, have been inspired by her, and I’ve been fighting everyday, but this singles match, it was super fun, but I also thought, 'yep, this girl is crazy. She does things you’d never anticipate from places you’d never expect, and you think, ‘this is insane’, but seeing that madness, or rather experiencing her insanity, that’s what makes the match so out of control and so much fun. I somehow managed to get the win today. Billie is truly awesome. That was fun. I hope she comes back again. Even for another singles match in TJPW. I’d be down to team up for the next one, too. Let’s do it again!”

Billie’s comments were in English:

Billie: “I’ve missed this so much, truly. I know me and Miyu have interacted hundreds and hundreds of times, at this point. But truly she is one of my favorite partners to wrestle. And I miss TJPW. I got to wrestle for them while they were in the states, but nothing matches the energy of Grand Princess every year. This match in particular, god, Miyu kicked my butt! I didn’t think she was going to kill me like that today. I’m not gonna lie, we’ve—” (brief cut) “But today, it was on a different level.”

And I think I’ll stop there for now and save the three title matches for another post.

It amounts to the same difference really, but for what it’s worth キャリアも近い is technically saying that they’ve been wrestling for about as long as HIMAWARI has, not that they’ve (both) been wrestling for a short time. “We’ve had a similar length career” or “they debuted around the same time (as me)” would therefore strictly speaking be closer (but this is the kind where I’m mentioning it only because it looks like it might be evidence of a misinterpretation, but if it’s instead from an intentional gloss it’s fine).

Haha, you could always just add more exclamation marks!!!

“cultivate” might be a good option - I feel like the sense of 引き寄せた幸運 would be that it’s like, good fortune that they’ve actively drawn in / cultivated, like by their positive thinking.

Not primarily a language comment, it was just fun to go back and see the moment she was thinking of that prompted the comment.
Haru gets in the ring and decides to sit unobtrusively in the corner instead of going to celebrate, before Yuki sees her and waves her in.

So Yuki wants to be approachable enough to Haru that she doesn’t feel like she has to be deferential when they just won a match together!
The “I’ll just sit here out of the way… wouldn’t want to be a bother…” is such a funny but relatable move to pull in that context! :sob: As is Yuki’s “lol what are you doing over there!” reaction upon noticing.

Seeing if anything could be improved with that context - I’d probably change “when I win” to “when we win” since it’s primarily about wanting Haru to feel included and like she can come celebrate too.

Ha! You got too confused trying to translate Kamiyu’s stylish/sarcastic phrasing and forgot the context! :slightly_smiling_face:
Since VENY just brought up their individual careers, Kamiyu means she debuted in August.
“You’ve been doing this for 8 years, 10 for me.”
“That’s right, I’m an August birthday girl (i.e. I debuted in August).”

The joke is she’s dodging VENY’s bringing up the possibility of a title shot for her, by pretending she was talking about belts as in accessories and taking her to a fashionable district to go clothes shopping. :slightly_smiling_face:
The tweak I would make is rather than “We’ll go to Ginza to get the belts” “We’ll go to Ginza to pick up some belts / a belt for you” - that kind of thing.

Hard to describe tweak here:

Since I’ve been in the U.S., this time it was three months, but I’ve been together with Billie so much that it feels like I was on tour with her.

I guess one of those “which way is the ‘but’ pointing” kinds of things.

Finished the second half of the Summer Sun Princess translation!

The first title match was Moka vs Suzume for the International belt! I was rooting for Moka in this, so I was really happy to see her win it! (It’s too bad that she hasn’t really been able to do anything since winning the belt, though… I hope her health recovers soon… :anxious_face_with_sweat:)

Moka’s comments were super quiet…

Miyamoto: “I beat Suzume-san. I was able to win my first belt…” (cries)

This was a bit tough to put into English: “なかなか取れなくて、いつか取りたいって思ってたけど、取ることができて…あと2日後、7月23日にデビュー5周年を迎えられるので、ベルトとともに駆け抜けることができて嬉しいです。鴻臚館って技は初めて未詩さんの持つインターナショナルのベルトに挑戦する時に、この技で勝ってベルトを取りたいって思って作ったものだったので.”

“It was difficult to win, and I was hoping I’d win it someday, but now that I’ve done it… In two days, on July 23, I’ll celebrate my 5th debut anniversary, and I’m so happy that I’ll be able to celebrate it with a belt in hand. The move named Korokan was created when I first challenged for Miu-san’s International belt. I’d intended to beat her with that move and then win the belt. I want to grow even more alongside the Korokan as I hold the International belt and fight all sorts of people from both inside and outside of Japan. Thank you very much.”

(What’s the difference between your past challenges and this one?)

“In the past, even when we faced each other in preview matches and such, I was never able to get a direct win over my opponent. But this time, I was able to defeat Suzume-san in preview matches, too. The belt felt closer to me even in the preview matches.”

(What kind of champion do you want to become?)

“From here on out, my costume is very Japanese, and my moves are also Japanese-style, so I want to fight against a lot of overseas wrestlers and show the world Japanese pro wrestling. I want to become a pro wrestler who represents Japan.”

(Is there anyone you want to face in a title match?)

This was a bit tricky: “いまのところは考えてないんですけど…急に知らない海外の選手とのシングルを組まれることもあるんですけど、それはそれで自分の成長につながるって思うので.”

“At this point, I haven’t thought about it… but sometimes I get suddenly paired with an overseas wrestler I don’t know. If that happens, I think it might help my growth.”

Suzume’s comments:

Suzume: “…I lost the belt. I think today I was definitely the strongest I have ever been. And despite that, I couldn’t beat Moka. But I think I went full steam ahead in my usual style. In both my title matches and the American tour, I feel like I charged ahead as fast as I could go. I’m really sad and frustrated that it all ended here…! But having the International Princess belt with me as I fought really, really broadened my world. Thanks to the belt, I was able to push forward like this, so I might be lost for a bit, but… the fact that I was able to fight and make it this far, and get my hands on the belt, that was all because of everyone who believed in me and encouraged me. I’m sure I’ll be okay from here on out. I hope I can become capable of once again living up to the faith of everyone who believed in me today. Thank you so much for fighting alongside me on my road of defenses!”

(The tournament is starting soon. Will you be able to switch gears?)

“The summer isn’t over yet, so I can’t miss out on what’s going to be a hot summer. I’ll probably be super depressed for a bit, but… I’ll definitely get back on my feet!”

After that was the Kyoraku Kyomei vs Daydream tag team championship match, which was my favorite match on the show, I think. Really great work from all four of these wrestlers. I was pretty sure Kyoraku Kyomei was winning, but I definitely got nervous near the end… I really loved the sasumata Giant Swing Miu did here. Some of the stuff in this made me feel like we’ve hardly scratched the surface of spots you could do with a sasumata.

I actually wondered if they were going to go to a draw in this match because they passed the 25 minute mark (rare in TJPW) and seemed like they still had a lot left in them. I don’t think I’d have minded a draw, actually, but it’s nice that Kyoraku Kyomei got to definitively prove that they’re the better team :face_with_steam_from_nose:.

Kyoraku Kyomei’s comments:

Misao: “We won!”

Nakajima: “We won!”

Misao: “Successful title defense!”

Nakajima: “We defended them! Against Daydream.”

This was a bit tricky to translate: “引き分けるかと思った、でも引き分けだけは絶対にイヤだったので、引き分けたらもう闘いは一生終わらないし、一生勝てないと思って、引き分けるかもって思った瞬間に底力が勝ち負けを分けた気がしてます.”

“I thought it might go to a draw, but a draw would absolutely suck; if we got a draw, the battle would just keep going for the rest of our lives, and we’d never win. So the moment I felt like it might be a draw, I feel like my last reserve of strength came out and decided the outcome.”

Misao: “I really wanted to beat Daydream right at this moment, and by doing that, I feel like Kyoraku will truly start to race toward the future, and our pace is going to pick up even more.”

This was also a bit tricky: “一番怖いところに勝った気がします。次は世界各地回るかな。なので猛者たち待ってます。面白いことができるように、今日以上面白いことができるってタッグチームはぜひ日本に遊びに来てください。東京に遊びに来てください.”

Nakajima: “I feel like I won at the scariest point. Next we might travel all around the world. So we’re waiting for fearless fighters to come face us. Tag teams, please come to Japan to do something interesting, something even more interesting than today. Please come to Tokyo.”

Daydream’s comments:

Tatsumi: “Sigh… it’s frustrating.”

Watanabe: “So frustrating.”

Tatsumi: “I’m disappointed!”

Watanabe: “So disappointing.”

Tatsumi: “We made our comeback after a year, and we were Super Daydream.”

Watanabe: “Yeah.”

Tatsumi: “We came forward and challenged them, but Kyoraku Kyomei was greater than that!”

Watanabe: “It’s frustrating!”

I couldn’t decide on the best translation for おかしさ here: “我々のおかしさは負けてなかったと思うんだよな。でも共鳴もすごかった.”

Tatsumi: “I don’t think we lost to them in terms of eccentricity. But Kyoraku was also amazing.”

Watanabe: “Yeah.”

The “さすまたはなんなの?” parts here were a bit tricky lol but at least Miu also seemed confused…

Tatsumi: “What’s a sasumata?”

Watanabe: “Huh?”

Tatsumi: “Sasumata!”

Watanabe: “What’s a sasumata?”

Tatsumi: “What’s a sasumata?”

Watanabe: “You’re joking!”

Tatsumi: “Any moment now.”

Watanabe: “What?”

Tatsumi: “Shouldn’t we be getting offers to model and such?”

Watanabe: “That’s what you mean?”

Tatsumi: “I think we’ve really shown them off to the world.”

Watanabe: “Yeah, we haven’t got any official offers.”

Tatsumi: “With two girls this pretty holding sasumata, you should give us offers to model!”

This was a bit difficult to localize: “貢献したでしょ!”

“We’ve furthered the cause, right?”

Watanabe: “It’s a bit unexpected! Right, from here on out, we’ll aim to become sasumata supermodels.”

Tatsumi: “Of course we’ll also aim for the belts!”

Watanabe: “We’re going to do our best!”

Then the main event was Mizuki vs Yuki Arai for the Princess of Princess championship! I was pretty sure Mizuki was going to defend, but there were a few moments where I did get nervous (couldn’t help but worry that Arai was going to recreate that moment where she won the tag titles from MagiRabbi…). I thought it was a solid match and a great performance from Arai. It also showed just how far ahead of Arai Mizuki still was. When Mizuki really gets going, she’s just on another level.

Here’s the post-match:

Mizuki: “To everyone who came here today, and to everyone who couldn’t come but who watched it on the stream, thank you for spending today with us!”

This was a bit tricky: “荒井ちゃんはスーパーマンみたいだけど、スーパーマンに強がって見せてるところもあると思います.”

“Arai-chan is like Superman, but I think she also puts on a brave front like Superman. But after fighting her today, I realized once again how amazing Yuki Arai is.”

Got a bit thrown off by the concept of a “近い未来” here: “とってもとっても未来が、近い未来が楽しみになりました.”

“I’m really, really looking forward to her future, the future that isn’t far from here.”

“Today, I received the baton that was passed along by everyone starting from the very first match, and I’m so blessed to be able to carry it all the way to the end and be here with everyone! We, everyone at TJPW, will continue to do our utmost to bring you pro wrestling that makes you look forward to tomorrow, so please take the baton. Thank you so much for today!”

Mizuki’s comments:

Mizuki: “I was able to defend my belt against Yuki Arai. I could feel Arai-chan continuing to grow during the match, and she was getting stronger and stronger… I thought, ‘Yuki Arai really is amazing.’”

“But after it was over, she was frustrated, and I don’t know what kind of tears she cried, or if it was frustration or what, but seeing her like that, I thought, ‘Yuki Arai is Superman, but… maybe she’s trying to be everyone’s Superman.’ I hope I can support Yuki-chan from here and keep doing pro wrestling with her.”

Unprecedented TJPW translation challenge: references to brand new American movies that I also haven’t seen. (She’s presumably referring to the new Superman movie and not just like, Superman In General. So I hope there’s not some specific quote from that that she’s referencing here…)

This was a bit tricky: “(荒井選手のすごみはどこから感じた?)目が死なないんですよ。絶対動けないのに、目だけは負けたくないって目をしてて。力が入ってないエルボーもすごくすごく重く感じました.”

(What about Arai made you feel that she was amazing?)

“The fire in her eyes refused to die. Even when she couldn’t move at all, by her eyes alone, you could see that she didn’t want to lose. And even her elbow strikes without any power in them felt like really heavy blows.”

(Since you defeated the superhuman Superman, what would that make you?)

“I’m the Princess of Princess.”

(You’ll be doing the Princess Cup as the Princess of Princess)

“At the tournament drawing, Yuki (Aino)-chan said that she wanted to beat me here and go on to win the whole thing, then face me as the champion on an even bigger stage. Shoko-san also said that she wanted to face me while both of us are holding belts, so that reaffirmed my desire to defend my belt today no matter what.”

(And that last part was another プリンセス/姫 distinction issue…)

“I say that, but if I win the tournament, I can nominate either one, and I have to win both title defenses… but I want to do it. This summer, the Princess of Princess will become the top princess. I’m a real princess, huh?”

(Including when you faced the previous champion, Arai was the challenger with the greatest difference in career length between her career and yours)

“I think she was fully qualified to challenge, and she also won the right to challenge. But not only that—I feel like Arai-chan is growing so blazingly fast that she has a real claim to challenge for the title. I intended to take all of her moves and stop her in her tracks as we fought, and I think I did do that, but I wonder if Arai-chan took everything that I had to give, too. There is a difference in career length between us, but I don’t think it matters. When you’ve reached the point of challenging for this belt, I don’t think career length matters anymore. I think we were on equal footing the moment she tried for this belt.”

Arai’s comments:

Arai: “Well… I couldn’t win it.”

Struggled with putting this into English: “えー、なんか分かってたけど、やっぱりまだまだ瑞希さんのいる場所は高くて。でもいままではやっぱり挑戦したい、勝ちたい、ベルト取りたいって気持ちだけでここまできたんですけど、やっぱり届かないって今回初挑戦で身に染みて感じて。こう勢いとか運とか、そんなもんだけじゃ届かないっていうのを実感しましたし、瑞希さんの積み重ねてきたものをすごい感じました.”

“Yeah, I kind of knew it, but Mizuki-san’s level is still too high for me. But up until now, I’d made it this far just on the strength of my desire to challenge her, beat her, and take the belt, but it really sunk in during my first challenge that I couldn’t reach her level this attempt after all. I realized that merely having momentum and luck and such isn’t enough, and I really felt the strength of everything that Mizuki-san has built up over her career. But this isn’t a once-in-a-lifetime chance, so of course I want to become someone who’ll be able to wear that belt one day.”

Struggled a lot with the 一番認められる part in this: “その時、自分も堂々と…自分を一番認められる状態でまた挑戦したいと思いました.”

“And at that time, I want to challenge when I can boldly… when I’m in a position to be recognized as number one. I’m glad that I got the chance to challenge when Mizuki-san was champion!”

(The tournament is starting imminently. Are you able to switch gears just like that?)

This was a bit tricky: “そうですねー。…はい、切り替えます。私は8月2日から初戦が始まるので。まぁ8月なので、月が違うのでどうにか頑張ります(苦笑)。8月の力全部使います.”

“Yes, that’s right! …And yes, I can. My first match will be on August 2. Well, it’ll be in August, so it’s a different month, but I’ll do my best somehow.” (laughs) “I’ll use every bit of my August strength.”

This was also a bit tricky: “(瑞希よりあのベルトとの距離感を感じた試合だった?)両方ですね。瑞希さんには前哨戦で一度届いたけど、それはタッグでの力であったりとか。運とかそういうのもあったりして、やっぱり瑞希さんも普段とは違う、シングルの怖い瑞希さんが出てきて。やっぱりすごく遠く感じました.”

(Rather than between you and Mizuki, did you feel a distance between you and the belt in that match?)

“Both. I was able to reach Mizuki-san once in a preview match, but I had the power of my tag team then, and there was luck and such involved. And after all, it was a different Mizuki-san from usual—the scary singles version of her came out. I really felt like I was a long way off.”

(And when she asked you for a handshake at the end…?)

This was a bit tricky: “動けなかったです(苦笑)。動けるでしょってかんじで見てきたけど、動けない! 立てない!って言ったら迎えに来てくれたので、チャンピオンは優しかったです.”

“I couldn’t move.” (laughs) “I thought I should probably move, but I couldn’t! When I said, ‘I can’t stand up!’, she came over to me, so the champion was kind.”

And that’s it for that one. Finally finished with Summer Sun Princess when the TPC is already just about over…

I’m aiming to work on the Hype 3 translation next, which might be more of a background project depending on how much other folks will be able to help with it. Since you expressed an interest in helping with that, rodan, I’ll try to get the transcript to you soon. I think we have from the second intermission until the end covered (though I suppose you’ll probably also be helping edit my portion…), though I haven’t had luck getting help with more than that so far.

Still not sure at this point if my friend will need the fundraising help, but that might affect my translation speed if an urgent need comes up.

Not especially important, but I feel like maybe “I feel like we cleared the scariest hurdle” might read more clearly for that beginning part. I would say that she’s saying that as a champion team, the 一番怖いところ was having to face Daydream, and now they’ve cleared that / won that encounter.

Yeah it’ll be hard to translate but it could probably use some more like - “What gives!” kind of connotation for the なんなの.
In fact in trying to word it a different way to explain it I just went with “what gives” so maybe if it were me I’d just go with “Sasumata, what gives!”

“puts on the brave front of being Superman” might be more directly precise in conveying what at least I think is the intended meaning here.

I feel like maybe you just got caught in a momentary bit of overthinking it? “near future” is about as direct as can be.

Mild tweaks I’d suggest perhaps to the beginning would be something like “But after it was over, she was frustrated - well, I don’t know why she was crying, if it was frustration or what, I don’t know - but”
the 何の涙か分からないけど、悔しいのか分かんないけど clauses I would say are her tempering what she was starting to say but making clear that it was just her observation and interpretation, and she doesn’t really know what was going on.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the Superman stuff, incidentally. I think it fits as a general metaphor, and isn’t referencing a specific line or plotline. Like Arai’s strong on her own but she’s also trying to step into responsibility/a role even beyond that. (I haven’t seen the new movie but I’ve read some Superman comics in my day for whatever that’s worth…)

I would maybe tweak the どっちも parts to like “but if I win the tournament, I want to nominate both of them - I 'd have to win both title defenses then, but I want to do it.”

I think in the video the reporter is asking “including during previous championship reigns, this was probably the title defense with the biggest difference in terms of length of (pro wrestling) career, how was that aspect?” Like - he’s speculating this was the largest gap in career in the title’s history.
Which is an interesting statistic to try to verify! So I spent some time on Cagematch…
It seems like the difference between Mizuki and Arai (I assume judging from the latter’s full debut) here is around 9 years.
I think the other large gap Princess of Princess title matches are:

  • Miu Watanabe defending against Ryo Mizunami - 14 years.

… and that’s it. All the other Princess of Princess matches seemed like they were between TJPW talent or guests who also debuted around the 2010s like the champions.
So I think if it weren’t for Aniki last year, his speculation would be outright correct - as-is technically I think Arai would indeed still be the challenger with the greatest career length deficit compared to the champion (since in Aniki’s case the challenger was the one with the longer career), which is probably the sense he had in mind.
Make of all that what you will translation-wise, I guess.

Minor tweak I’d maybe suggest is “so I’ll do my best somehow” (rather than “but”) I think her line of thought is like – the transition in month will help her transition in mindset.

I think the 動けるでしょってかんじで見てきたけど part should be like, “She gave me a look like she expected I could move, but” or maybe “She looked like ‘surely you can move!’ but”

okeydoke, sounds good!

(No pressure to work on this immediately if you’d rather do the translation in order, but I wanted to post it just so that it’s here.)

I’ve finally finished the rough draft for the translation of the end of Hype 3 (the original June 27 one, not the rerun). Sorry to any lurkers for the discussion of this one; I don’t have any public transcript I can link, though the official site has some of this stuff transcribed.

As always, I recommend anyone who’s curious about it check out the show yourself! Here’s Dramatic DDT’s English recap, and here’s a link to the show itself.

I think I’ll wait to share my extended thoughts on the show until we’ve finished translating it and I’ve had the chance to watch it all the way through again.

I’ve also changed up the formatting of my translation slightly (compared to how things are usually formatted on my blog) because I’m trying to make it a bit easier to read and parse such a gigantic volume of text. Currently I have all of the names for the dialogue tags in bold, and all of the stage directions/descriptions of what’s happening in italics, and I’m going without quotation marks. I might change my mind on some of the formatting by the time we get a complete draft together, but that’s how my current draft looks.

With that out of the way, here’s starting from “Ending scene 2” in the transcript document (the part after the video where we see Misao run away and Yuki pretends to be her):

Cut back to the ring.

Misao: Yuki, I can’t believe you really waited for me pretending to be me…

Suzume: So, it was really Yuki-san doing everything right from the start?

This was a bit tricky: “え、じゃ、強めにして のも…”

Kiryu: Huh, then even the strong things…

Shino: But normally merely bumping heads with someone surely wouldn’t cause you to swap bodies, right?

As someone who has written a pro wrestling fanfic where a bodyswap happens, this made me laugh: “あるから!プロレス界ではあるから!”

Nakajima: It happens! In the world of pro wrestling, it happens! (crowd laughs and claps)

Raku: So then Yuki-san did all of the preparations and the practice, too?

Rika: Why didn’t you tell us, Yuki!

Misao runs into the ring.

Misao: (through tears) It’s all my fault! I’m so, so sorry. Well, as you all saw, I truly didn’t have the confidence to hand over the script to anyone. To be honest, I was so discouraged, I had no motivation to even write the script to begin with.

And last year when we did ‘HYPE!’, I also got injured right before.

This was a bit tricky: “その時は、その時の私が、なんか、まだ「HYPE!」前の初めてっていうか、全然これ私が書き上げてみんなに渡せばいけるって自信全然あったんです、去年のね.”

At that time, it was right after the first ‘HYPE!’, or rather, last year I still had total confidence that I’d be able to finish writing it and hand it off to everyone.

But this year, finally, after a long absence, and after I hadn’t been able to do anything with Nakajima-san, I wanted to win the belts, and so I came back with that in mind, and we finally won them, and I’d already thought up a whole plot for ‘HYPE!’, too. But then it was just one thing after another. And I couldn’t use my arm due to an injury.

And, in the first place, ‘HYPE!’ was something I started because I wanted everyone to better understand all of the wrestlers’ potential. But in order for ‘HYPE!’ to move forward, I needed to have the trust of the wrestlers as a wrestler myself, and I couldn’t even present the script with confidence.

But despite being a champion, I got this stupid injury, and I was once again out of commission right before the show. And I just arbitrarily decided that in this state, no one would have confidence in me as a wrestler. So I lacked confidence in the script as I’d written it. And that’s why I didn’t give it out.

This was a bit tricky: “そもそも私がこんなのをやらなくてもみんなホント試合やってくれればすごい十分魅力が伝わるとわかっていたから、いっそのこと私が戻らずに、あのう、すべて放棄して消えちゃおうかなと思っていたの.”

I knew that even if I didn’t do this, the matches themselves would be more than sufficient to convey the charm, so I thought that maybe I shouldn’t come back, and I should just leave it all behind and disappear.

The 行方不明展 vibes in this show were so real…

But Yuki disappeared for real, and of course I worried about her, so I came today and secretly watched the rehearsals and dress rehearsals and all of that. In just a short time, you all—the wrestlers as well as the staff—are so, so talented, you made my script a hundred times, two hundred times, a hundred million times better. I couldn’t just let Yuki suffer alone, so I came today, even though it’s too late, just to apologize to you all. I’m really, really sorry. I’m so sorry. But thank you. Sorry.

Misao bows deeply, crying. The other wrestlers stay silent, until Aino approaches Misao.

Aino: Misao-san… I think Misao-san regretted her decision to do HYPE! this time. And she might regret it even now.

But this is a story about my own regret. When I was a child, my older sister and father were involved with something like a community musical in our hometown. I really loved watching it, and since I had friends my age there, they said, “Yuki should do it, too”. I really wanted to do it, but (through tears) I had no confidence, so I didn’t do it. And I’ve regretted it ever since.

This was a bit tricky: “今回、正直、本当に断れない状況で主役って言われたけど、断れない状況だったから、私はやれました.”

This time, to be honest, I wasn’t in a position to be able to refuse when I was offered the lead role, but because I couldn’t refuse, I was able to do it. Misao-san, thank you for giving me this opportunity, and for writing the script for “HYPE!”.

Also, this is a really personal story, but three years ago, my tag partner, my older sister Nodoka Tenma, graduated. She was my dream, my idol, my hero all in one, and she had such a huge presence in my life, so after she left, I felt like I was stuck in a maze I couldn’t escape, like something was missing, like I was all by myself, and it was so tough.

This was a bit difficult to translate: “でも、難波の卒業とか、なんか、そういう色々あって、ようやくちゃんと気付けた.”

But after Namba’s graduation, and some other things, I finally realized something. Even without Nodoka here, I have… (she takes a moment to compose herself) I have so many people around me. I knew that I wasn’t totally alone, but I had been avoiding seeing what was around me.

But the thing that shows me that and makes me realize it is this TJPW ring right here. This warm and uplifting TJPW ring is a very dear place that broadens my world. And I love fighting in front of the amazing crowd here in the venue (the crowd applauds).

This was a bit tricky: “私は今も大切にこれからも愛野ユキは生きます.”

And I will continue to cherish it and live as Yuki Aino (the crowd applauds). Right now, I’m feeling super passionate. But I want my passion to burn even hotter; I want to fight more, so Misao-san (she turns to look at Misao, who is kneeling), Misao-san, earlier you talked about people having faith in you as a wrestler. But we have so, so much faith in you both as a wrestler, and also as someone who creates “HYPE!”! (the crowd applauds) So please fight me.

Misao: There’s no way I can refuse. Yuki, I’m sorry. Thank you (the crowd applauds).

This was a bit tricky: “あとは試合で.”

I’ll leave the rest for the match.

Aino: Yes.

Misao: I look forward to working with you.

Aino: Likewise.

They shake hands and the crowd applauds as the lights dim. The opening song is played once more.

Then here’s before the main event: Hyper Misao vs Yuki Aino (my friend helpfully provided a timestamp: 1:27:45~).

Misao: Mic, please! (crowd cheers as she takes the mic) To all of you gathered in the venue, hello, big children!

The crowd loudly answers.

Misao: Hyper Misao, the new hero protecting love and peace in Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling, is here! I’m sorry for making you wait. I might have kept you waiting for too long. Well, everyone, as you saw, I went missing, and even though this is like my very first singles match since making my return, I absolutely can’t lose this one, and I really, really want to get fired up, from the bottom of my heart. Yuki, once again, I am looking forward to it!

And finally, the ending promos:

After their match, Misao and Aino hug in the ring and collapse, both emotional. The crowd applauds them.

Nakajima: (to Misao, who is gesturing for the mic) Can you do this?

Misao: Yes.

The crowd shouts Misao’s name.

Misao: Huh… what’s this… Yuki… you were so, so, so passionate! Thank you!

I wanted to win, but I don’t know if it’s because I put so much in, or rather because I had so many feelings accumulated, but this was my first time doing a singles match in such a bad mental state (crowd laughs and applauds). Today, through fighting Yuki, my heart, which I thought had totally frozen over, was once again… well, maybe it was always burning.

Everyone is so important to me, and I have faith in them.

That’s why I wanted everyone to have faith in me, and I wanted to show everyone that I was good as I was, but things got all confused and I went missing. But maybe, just maybe, I’ve had faith in everyone right from the start, and today’s “HYPE!”, both the beginning portion and this match, made that so, so clear, to the extent that it hurts.

(Through tears) And then Yuki said, “I want a singles match.” I’m always the one asking for unreasonable things, but this time Yuki was the one making an unreasonable request of me.

This was a bit tricky: “なんかすごいユキっていつも本当に周りのことを見てて、周りを穏やかに収めようとかそういうすごいどんな世代の人もつなげるそういうね、いいところすごい持ってて.”

Yuki is always so observant of everyone around her, calmly trying to keep everyone in order, and bringing together people of all ages; she has so many good qualities.

Also struggled a bit with this: “だからこそ、自分自身のホントはすごい熱いのにその気持ちもあまりね、優先せず、なんか、そういうところが私、あるのかなって勝手に思っていただから.”

That’s why, even though I myself am really passionate, I don’t really let those feelings take precedent, so I’ve wondered if that’s a quality I possess. For that reason, I wanted Yuki to be the main character (crowd applauds), and even though I had no idea it was going to happen, when she said, “Let’s do a singles match”, she allowed me to be selfish for the first time, and it made me really happy. Thank you.

Aino: (through tears) Misao-san, you’re always saying things that put yourself down! Like “I can’t write” or “It’s not interesting”! Don’t say that! We think the things that you create are super interesting! Everyone loves you, Misao-san! It’s sad to hear you say those kinds of things, so please don’t say it anymore! (crowd applauds). It was really fun getting to do this today with everyone. Thank you very much.

Aino hands the mic back to Misao.

Misao: What should I do… Nakajima-san (crowd laughs and applauds).

Nakajima: Yes, well, this time, Misao really took it all upon herself, and got consumed with worry to the point that she obsessed over it… Y’know, trying to do your best on your own is a good quality, but it can also be a bad thing. That really came out in “HYPE!”. Don’t overthink things.

Misao: Yes.

Nakajima: We have faith in you, truly.

Misao: Thank you!

The crowd cheers and applauds as Misao says “Sorry! Sorry!”

Nakajima: Yes, so it was a lot of fun this time around, too.

The crowd applauds, Nakajima gestures as if giving the mic to Kiryu, who declines (crowd laughs).

Nakajima: No, it’s weird for me to be the one holding it.

Someone in the crowd shouts “Nakajima!”

Nakajima: Thank you very much. (crowd laughs). Then, I’ll pass the baton.

Kiryu: Why me?! I don’t have anything to say!

The crowd chants “Mahiro! Mahiro! Mahiro!”.

Kiryu: Huh? But there’s nothing for me to even say!

Tatsumi: You have nothing to say after watching that match?!

Tatsumi gestures as if to punch Kiryu.

This was a bit tricky: “そういう意味じゃなくて!そういう意味じゃなくて!みなさんが愛を伝えたから、急に私が出てきて、そんな、そんなこんな…”

Kiryu: That’s not what I mean! That’s not it! Everyone conveyed their love, and then I suddenly came out, and then this and that happened… But everyone really loves you, Misao-san. You have to realize that.

Misao: Understood!

Kiryu: You have to accept it.

Misao: Understood!

This was one of those weirdly difficult to translate short phrase moments… “よろしくね!” (also the “はい!”s were also a bit tricky…)

Kiryu: Take care!

Misao: Understood!

Kiryu: I’m returning the mic (crowd laughs and applauds).

This was a bit tricky: “はい、じゃあみなさん、こんな…一番で、なんか、別になんだ、ごめんなさいなんか。締めます!このいつもなんか、過去2回、なんか、しっくりきてない締めなんですが、やってるうちに、なんかよくなっていくことでしょう.”

Misao: Okay, then everyone, this… in the first place, this is, well, I’m sorry. Let’s wrap up! The usual closing hasn’t felt quite right the past two times, but I think it’ll get better as we keep doing it. So, when I say, “I get HYPE, we get—”, let’s all stretch out the “HYPE!” part. Let’s do it one more time, yes, “I get HYPE, we get HYPE!” Ready? Let’s go! Let’s go. Let’s go. Thank you all so very much! (the crowd cheers). I get HYPE, we get HYPE! Thank you very much!

Then that’s it! The credits roll after that.

(happened to notice this first bit after my original first comment after)

This part is a bit of a key line in the preceding video, so it may require some tricky finagling and coordination with whoever translates that part.
Yuki yells at the end of the video (quotes in the original video), with audience gasps since it hints at what’s being revealed, and so this line is following right on that, like “I can’t believe you really did what you said (so literally/elaborately).”
And the translation for the part in the video would probably sound weird as “Misao, I’ll pretend to be you and wait for you!” after all!

Ah ha!
I thought of I think a good solution!
“Misao-san, I’ll cover for you!”
followed by after the video:
“Yuki, you really did cover for me…”
I think that wording conveys better what’s happening with the lines - Yuki is calling out to Misao to not go for good, since Yuki will (in some way) lie and put up a front that will keep her from in good standing with everyone until she returns - and I thought of “cover for” as I was trying to put that into words and it feels like it matches just right, and with the double meaning too.

This process is going to involve some interesting new challenges, but I get the impression especially editing I’m going to end up with a much more thorough understanding of the show…

In this case, the transcriber has elided an uncertain part with a space here: “強めにして のも” and I also found it difficult to figure out exactly what Mahiro said - it sounded like かたばんしてきた to me but I didn’t know what かたばん meant.
It was clear it was a laugh line about something Yuki had done while supposedly being Misao though, possibly involving a move in a match or something since Mahiro seemed to grip her arm. So eventually I started watching back from the point in the opening video that introduced that concept, and the answer became clear:

Yuki’s Misao-ness is initially confirmed when she’s a jerk to Mahiro and hits her in the shoulder.

So that’s clearly what it was about, and with that in mind, the part we weren’t able to hear correctly in the audio is 肩パンしてきた, with 肩パン being relatively difficult to track down from just (misheard) hiragana due to being a slangy abbreviation with a wikipedia article and pixiv dictionary entry but none on jisho.

So the translation should be along the lines of:
“Wait, then even when you socked me hard in the shoulder…?”

Surprisingly fun beginning to helping out with this!

(that was my favorite line in the show too)

The transcript missed a little bit here that clears it up: 前の初めての怪我っていうか.
So the translation should be something like:
“At the time… it was my first injury right before a HYPE show, or like I still had total confidence that everything would be fine as long as I just finished up what I’d written and gave it to everyone.”

Minor and maybe arguable tweak but I would suggest “I got it in my head that” rather than “I just arbitrarily decided that” for 勝手に思いつめちゃって just since I would say the 勝手に here is less about arrbitrariness (since we know her reasons, since she just explained them), and more about how like, it was a potentially misguided idea that she came to worry about of her own accord.

I think here in the first part she’s maybe saying like - “After all I knew from the start that even if I didn’t do all of this (meaning HYPE / the scripted drama elements), everyone would get over fine from real matches”
That feels to me more like it fits with the rhetorical elements like そもそも and いっそのこと.
It’s too zoomed in to tell in the video, but I feel like she maybe gestures when she says こんなの and I wonder if that would make it clearer (like if she’s gesturing to include the whole show).
(I thought I was clever when I went to check the encore show to see if it had a different angle but… that one is more different than I had already assumed! I should watch it!)

(this is where I noticed the “cover for” thing, because I got kind of turned-around in what all was HYPE kayfabe vs regular kayfabe vs what actually happened in this speech working on editing the first bit and rewatched the video part )

I have a good-natured small バツ :cross_mark: to hand out here! As I would say this:
ユキがね、実際消えちゃったんけど、ユキが
is a clear-cut interjection and continuation, that I bet you would get from what’s in the transcript and what was in the video with a once over.
“Yuki - I did actually disappear, but - Yuki”
She’s saying that she did actually run off like in the video, but of course she got curious about what Yuki was going to do, so she secretly watched.
I would phrase it without the interruption because of English phrasing, like:
“I really did disappear, but of course I was curious what Yuki was going to do, and”

Nothing wrong, but I would maybe slightly tweak “when I was offered the lead role” to “when I was told I would be the lead” or “when I was told I had the lead part” since it lines up with what she’s saying and strengthens it a little.

:hollow_red_circle:
(does seem like it would be tricky but I think it turned out perfectly well!)

I’d probably just throw in a “, truly.” or something for that last “、ホント”. I think with that in it’s a little more safe from being misconstrued as like “well actually Yuki didn’t need to fire me up at all”

Here in the transcript it should have been みんなのこと so I think it should be something like “I wanted to show everyone’s strengths the way it was developing”
Like I would say she’s talking about the motivations she had for putting on HYPE originally, to spotlight everyone in a different way, but the sentence gets a little tripped over as she coughs a little.

Unfortunately timed transcript ミス here at a critical juncture.
Should be:

This makes significantly more sense in context rhetorically, since it wasn’t her trust in others she was worried about.
“Maybe, just maybe, everyone had faith in me from the start”
(just one of those inevitable things for editors to catch)

I’d maybe tack on a “like that” at the end of this just because of the そういうs - like I would say Misao is trying to describe in different ways a particular kind of social-minded quality that Yuki has (and it looks like the next part is going to build on that - her worry that she herself does not have that specific kind of quality).

One more accidental reversal, but not a transcription thing this time. Transcript says:
「ユキにワガママぶつけてもらえた」 would mean, I would say, very very roughly “Yuki was kind enough to selfishly confront me”
And this is another one where I would say rhetorically speaking, that fits much cleaner. She’s saying like, “Yuki is very considerate of other people, and I worry that I’m not, so I wanted her to be the main character this time, and it makes me happy to think that in asking for this match with me, for the first time she fully confronted me with her will.”
Misao learns from Yuki to be a bit more considerate of others, Yuki learns from Misao to be a bit more assertive, everyone wins.

(Yeah! I echo the sentiment to Misao-san and to those I know with her portrait)

Small not very important tweak but I would maybe tweak it to like “today’s ‘HYPE!’” or “‘HYPE!’ this time” here, just since I would say she’s still talking about 今回. Like 今回 became a HYPE where that aspect really came out.

I would tweak the end here to something like maybe “and then suddenly I’m out here and, and, and…”
I would say that she’s describing like her suddenly having the mic now with the 急に私が出てきて.

This part the transcript sort of inherently has trouble conveying, and I don’t 100% know exactly what she means besides, but it’s all her kind of mumbling and looking around as she gets on her feet and transitions to closing.
Its sounds to me like “Well then everyone, first, uh, doesn’t matter, uh, sorry but - I’m wrapping up!”
In that I don’t know where she was going with 一番 but the 別に I would say is her rejecting that thought, like she was going to say 一番 was going to be such and such but then changed her mind and said it didn’t matter with 別に
And the ごめんなさい is a quick polite sorry to the others for closing, not a big meaningful moment or anything. The rest is kind of just filler.
Up to you how to handle it - would get cut down in an official transcript (I checked and they have じゃあみなさん、こんな… 締めます! which kept a little more than I would have guessed).
Maybe “Okay, then everyone… first uh,… sorry, I’m gonna close!” or something like that.

I think this is a bit less funny in a hard to describe kind of way. I would maybe try to preserve more of the order and the self-deprecation to try to re-engineer the laugh line.
Maybe something like “This usual closing, we’ve used it two times before, and well, it’s not great, but”
(perhaps not so different anyway though)

Thanks! I incorporated pretty much all of your corrections/suggestions, and tried to put the full draft in the folder so that the person covering the part before it can reference it, but I was having trouble getting the folder to let me upload a separate document, so とりあえず I just added it to the end of the transcript document.

I guess we’re kind of バトンを受け取る in reverse with this translation, huh…

Oh, I guess I should probably announce this in this thread as well, but I changed the url of my translation blog from gekiteki dot wordpress dot com to northernlightsbridge.wordpress.com. I’d been meaning to change it for a long time, since “gekiteki5” was quite literally chosen to be unremarkable, since the blog was initially created in the first place to be just a repository for myself and a few friends, so I hadn’t wanted it to be findable.

Plans changed during the Tokyo Princess Cup in 2022 because I got really annoyed by fans not understanding the stories being told during that tournament, lol, so I decided my imperfect translations were far better than nothing, and created the StorybookTJPW twitter account. And, well, the rest is history.

But I’d been dragging my feet over changing the name for several reasons: 1) I didn’t want to break every single past link to the blog, and 2) I couldn’t settle on a good name.

I didn’t want something TJPW-specific, because I didn’t want to limit the scope of the blog to just TJPW (or just CyberFight) stuff, and I didn’t want to use a reference to a specific wrestler (like naming it “Whirling Candy” or something like that) in case something happened in the future where that reference became painful to me or awkward for some reason (I used “#love and genuine feeling” for my AEW tag on a different site, and at the time it was a great fit because it was a quote from Cody describing AEW circa 2019…).

But then it felt like with generic wrestling stuff, the good names were either already taken (“The Spectacle of Excess” already exists as someone else’s blog, and as much as it pains me to admit, reddit was cooking with “Squared Circle”), or they’re too generic to the point where you couldn’t really do much with them. Like, moonsaults are probably my favorite basic wrestling move, but what do you do with that word to make it a memorable name?

I ended up landing on “Northern Lights Bridge” because the northern lights suplex is my favorite suplex (and hey, Shoko has a really beautiful one! There’s an indirect TJPW reference buried somewhere in here after all!), and I’ve always been particularly taken by bridging suplexes. When I first started watching pro wrestling, I found them unexpectedly beautiful. I feel like they contradicted my initial impression of the word “suplex” because they feel almost like something out of a ballet…

(If I had the artistic ability to do it, I’d probably try to make my drawing of a ballerina suplexing another ballerina into a logo for the site or something, because that’s the image I guess I want it to have.)

Plus, the northern lights outside of a wrestling context are very 諸行無常, and in addition to being a wrestling nod, “bridge” is also sort of a nod to translation being a bridge, or whatever.

I decided I wanted to change the url before the Hype translation goes up so that it can be located at a more stable place, and since there’s been a bit of a gap since my last translation, the last few aren’t circulating much anymore, and the TPC is a new story chapter, so it just felt like a good point to do it.

So that’s the explanation behind the new name.

The twitter/bluesky account(s) are going to stay as “Storybook TJPW” because I think that works fine as a TJPW-specific identity for promoting those translations to TJPW fans online, but this way, the blog itself can be more open-ended.

…I fully intended to put the first TPC show draft also in this post, but I’ve been way too busy the past couple days and I haven’t had the time :sob:

Alright, finally have time to post the first round of the Tokyo Princess Cup, which was on July 27.

The first tournament match on this show was Suzume vs Wakana. I initially thought Suzume had it in the bag, but TJPW loves to throw an early tournament upset in, so I started to get kind of a feeling, and sure enough, Wakana managed to pull it off, getting easily the biggest win of her career.

Wakana’s comments:

Uehara: "I actually managed to get past the first round somehow. As expected… the former IP champion Suzume-san is really strong.

The last bit of the first sentence here and the second one were a bit difficult to translate: “私これまでもシングル何回もさせていただいてて、ついこないだのダラス大会でも直接取られてしまっていたので、もう今日は気持ちで…とにかくがむしゃらに勝ちにいくしかないなって思いで臨みました。でもやっぱりすごい思いが空回りしちゃって、すっごい悔しい思いもあるんですけど.”

“We’ve had a bunch of singles matches before now, and she even beat me directly in the match we had at the Dallas show the other day, so my mindset today… I thought I just had to recklessly go for the win. But I was really just spinning my wheels, and I also felt a lot of frustration. The biggest frustration during the match was when she kicked out of my current finisher, the Banana Pillow; I really didn’t know what to do after that.”

This was also a bit tricky: “今日とにかく、技術とかの差はめちゃめちゃあるけど、とにかく強い鈴芽さんだからこそ気持ちで。とにかく気持ちだけは負けないって思って、最後本気で、ジャックナイフでなんとか勝つことができたので。すごい嬉しい気持ちもあるし、なんだろう…。ここがやっと1回戦突破できたので、ちょっといま勝てて嬉しいのももちろんあるんですけど、すごい気が動転してる部分もあるので。1回落ち着いて、2回戦もしっかりと準備をして、また臨みたいと思います.”

“Today, even though there is a huge gap between us in terms of skill, it was because I was facing the undeniably strong Suzume-san that I felt so determined. I told myself that I couldn’t let her outdo my feelings at least, and I went all out at the end and managed to win with a Jackknife. I’m really happy, but… I managed to just barely scrape past the first round, so of course I’m happy that I was able to win, but I’m also feeling really flustered. I need to come down from the first round, properly prepare for the second, and take on whatever it has to throw at me. I don’t know if my opponent in the second round will be Arai-san or Kamifuku-san. But since I’ve made it through the qualifying rounds thus far and somehow managed to win the first round, I want to approach the second round with the same mindset."

(Did you bring out the Jackknife on the spur of the moment?)

“Today I was mostly fighting her with my feelings. And before I knew it, I was rolling her up.”

(Which one do you want to fight, Arai or Kamifuku?)

"I lost to Arai-san last year. Since that loss happened in this very Princess Cup, I really want to fight Arai-san. But Kamifuku-san is of course my tag partner, so she’s also someone I really want to fight.”

This was a bit tricky because, of all things, the も there at the end: “そうだな…やっぱり上福さんとはこないだ闘ったばっかっていうのもあるし、去年のリベンジを今年はしたいっていうのもあって、荒井さんともすごく闘いたいです.”

“Hmm… well, I just fought Kamifuku-san recently, and this year I want to get revenge for what happened last year, so I really want to fight Arai-san, too."

Suzume’s comments:

Suzume: “I had just resolved to become someone who could live up to the faith that others have in me, so I feel pathetic. But I have faith that they’ll come to believe in me again. And above all, I love summer in TJPW. So I’m super bummed that my tournament is over, and I can’t be right at the forefront of that summer anymore. But because I love it so much, every year I feel that the tournament isn’t all there is. So from here on out this summer, I want to keep fighting passionately, so I’d be happy if you all could enjoy the summer with me.”

(With this succession of losses starting in Ota City, maybe in a way this could mark a turning point for you)

"Yes. This tournament came at a time where I’d lost the belt, so I really wanted to win.”

The first chunk of this was a bit hard to figure out how to put into English: “勝ち抜いた先に闘いたいって思う相手もいたので…でもやっぱりそれに向けてより一層頑張りたいって気持ちが増しているので.”

“There were opponents I really wanted to fight before getting the final victory… But, well, I’m feeling even more motivated to want to work harder toward that goal. So yeah, it’s a turning point."

Then Miu faced Raku, and I suddenly realized what that one yellow comment meant that gave us trouble that one time lol. Miu was referring to the fact that Raku had placed a traffic cone over her head (so the world quite literally “went yellow”). I think I actually went and edited my blog post translation during the match. For as much as Miu feared Raku in this, I didn’t have much faith in Raku’s ability to get the upset here (it felt kind of like Wakana had used up all of that luck already…), and alas, the traffic cone was not enough to get Raku past this round.

Miu’s comments:

Miu: “I made it through the first round of the tournament! Summer has begun. I just couldn’t afford to lose in the first round. I started off the year determined to keep winning but then lost right after. Ever since then, I’ve been aiming for the top again… I’d been making plans since the cold season to rally and make a comeback this summer, but then I had Raku-chan in the first round. I don’t know what’ll happen from here on out, but this was the scariest point. I think even my future self would say the same. But since I managed to get past this round, I feel like I can do it. This summer, I want to keep winning and winning and winning and advancing to the next round, and I am going to do my best to get my hands on the belt again.”

(For some reason, the transcriber didn’t include the end of her comments, so I didn’t attempt to translate it.)

I’m sure that future Miu would definitely agree that this was her hardest tournament match, yep, and that getting past this opponent in this round means that she will for sure be able to win the rest of the tournament.

Raku’s comments:

Raku: “Today I brought a bunch of Miu-chan’s favorite chocolates. I lured her with these, and then I managed to make her wear this (traffic cone)… that was a 20, wasn’t it? I feel like the count-out went beyond 20. Well… I tried my best. But when I ate this after the match, it was soooo good. I ate it in the ring…” (she eats the candy) "Yum!”

This was a bit tricky, because I assume she’s referring to Miu with the first part, but also she was right in the middle of talking about the candy? “ホントに強くて、お菓子食べて寝ます.”

“She’s really strong, so I’m going to eat candy and then go to sleep. So, Miu-chan, you absolutely have to win the whole thing! Then, here you go." (she hands the leftover candy to the interviewers) “Here.”

Then the main event was Mizuki vs Yuki Aino. I was actually sort of rooting for Mizuki to win the whole tournament (I thought it’d be cool if she won and nominated Itoh…), but at the same time, it’s always really hard to root against Yuki in circumstances like this, so I was a bit torn. Poor Yuki did end up getting eliminated… maybe next year will finally be her time.

Here’s the post-match:

Mizuki: "Thank you so much for coming today, everyone! I was really, really looking forward to fighting Yuki-chan. She looked at me with a glint in her eyes, with a gaze that seemed to burn with passion, so I kind of just… really felt that I couldn’t lose. I won today, but some of the girls in this tournament are feeling really frustrated. But everyone will definitely get back up again, so it’d make me happy if you keep encouraging everyone—the ones who lost, and the ones who won.”

This was a struggle to put cleanly into English… “こうやって毎週毎週会いに来てくれたり、来れる時に来てくれたり、配信で見てくれてるみなさんのおかげで大きいところでも試合ができると思ってます。でももっともっと大きいところでみなさんと一緒に時間を過ごしたいと思っているので、これからも支えてください!”

“Thanks to all of you who come every single week, who come whenever you can, and who watch the streams, we’re able to do matches in big places. But I want to spend time with all of you in even bigger places, so please keep supporting us! For those in the tournament as well as those who aren’t, we’ll all keep doing our utmost to deliver pro wrestling that makes you look forward to tomorrow, so we’re in your care. Thank you so much for today!"

Mizuki’s comments:

Mizuki: "I made it past the first round of the tournament! I’ve always, always wanted to fight Yuki-chan; she’s always been right there for me for title matches and other big moments. I tend to get really anxious, but she’s always been cheering me on and supporting me warmly and passionately; she’s a true friend. I’m so, so glad we got to fight. But she always looks at me with such sparkling eyes, telling me that she wants to fight me, wants to surpass me, wants to beat me.”

This was a bit tricky to put into English: “もう逆に負けられないなって思って。すごい意地でした。でも今日は私が勝ったけど、このまま引き下がるような子じゃないってことは分かってるから.”

“It made me think ‘well, I can’t lose now.’ It was pure stubbornness. But even though I won today, I know she’s not the kind of girl who’s just gonna back down.”

This was a bit tricky/confusing, until I realized it was a reference to Kingdom (which I’m not really familiar with) and not, like, a generic princess/kingdom connection… “私は…なんだっけ? 火だっけ? キングダムかなんかの火を受け継いで、さらに強くなってこのトーナメントを優勝したいと思います.”

“I… what was it? Was it fire? Like in Kingdom, I inherited her fire, and then I’m going to get even stronger and win the whole tournament.”

Uh oh, here’s where we get into trouble a bit with that “ただの姫に” again: “それでもうプリンセスがプリンセス…プリンセス・オブ・プリンセスがプリンセスカップ優勝して、ただの姫に…なんかランク下がったように感じるのはあれだけど…。トップ・オブ・プリンセスになれるように頑張っていくので.”

“And then the Princess will… the Princess of Princess will win the Princess Cup, and becoming just a literal princess… kinda feels like a step down, or something… I’ll keep doing my best to become the Top Princess. Please keep watching me!"

(If you win, you’ll become just a literal princess?)

Here’s a continuation of the

“Is that going to become a buzzword? Am I trying to make it a thing? I mean, I truly am a Princess right now. So wouldn’t it be better if I also became just a literal princess? Well, what do you think about ‘just a literal princess’?”

(I think it’d be better without the “just”…)

“Well, when I said ‘just a literal princess’, Yuki-chan told me, ‘The Kansai woman from Kobe came out’, so I’m going to do my best to become the Top Princess while staying true to my own style.”

(Next you have either Nakajima or Tatsumi)

"I basically just focus on what’s right in front of me, so today I was focused only on fighting Yuki-chan. But hearing that just now made me realize it again all of a sudden. No matter who comes forward, I have no doubt it’s gonna be really tough.”

Struggled with the translation for 心がギュッとなる here: “ずっと私が憧れてた2人だし、どっちがきても心がギュッとなるんだろうなって思ってるけど、みんなの声援だったり足を運んでくれる方だったり、配信で見てくれてるみなさんがいるから、みんな頑張れてると思うので.”

“They’re both people I’ve always admired, and no matter which of them it is, my heart will probably tense up, but I think we’re all able to do our best because of everyone’s cheers, and everyone coming to the venue and watching the stream. I want to carry that warmth forward with me, and no matter who I face, I’m going to win the whole thing."

Yuki’s comments:

Aino: "I lost! I’m saying it in a loud voice to gloss over it. Well… I lost. My summer is over… I won’t say it! Even if I said that, it wouldn’t do me any good. I don’t think summer is over. After all, the world is crazy hot, and it’ll stay hot through August, September, and October, so summer is still going strong. So my summer continues, too.”

“Well, I’d like to hand over the title of tournament ‘Princess’ to Pyon, so please become just a literal princess. You absolutely have to win it. And when she racks up another defense, I’m absolutely going to challenge Mizu-pyon. I don’t think it was a total defeat today, so I’m going to get even stronger, and challenge her again. But fighting Pyon today was really fun. A big thank you to everyone who cheered me on.”

At this exact point, I realized that the キングダム stuff was in fact a specific media reference (it’s kind of funny that they brought it up separately, though now that I think about it, Yuki likely was present for Mizuki’s comments and just heard what she said): “あの私、キングダムが好きなんですけど、キングダムの主人公の信が言ってたのが何だったかは忘れたんですけど…命の火は消えても、闘った相手の思いの火は受け取って闘っていくみたいなことを言ってたんですよ。私、それめっちゃ好きで。だからここは引用させていただこうと思います。私のトーナメントの命の火は消えてしまったけど、私の思いの火はぴょんに受け取ってもらって頂点までいってほしいと思います。ただの姫になってください!”

“Y’know, I like Kingdom, and I forgot what it was that the protagonist Shin said, but… it was something like, ‘Even if the flame of your life is extinguished, you can receive the flame of your opponent’s resolve and keep fighting’. I really like that. So I’d like to take that and quote it here. The flame of my tournament life may have been extinguished, but I hope Pyon receives the flame of my resolve and carries it with her all the way to the top. Please become just a literal princess! Do your best!"

And that’s it for that one.

Minor smoothness suggestion: “fighting by feeling” might work well here.

This is one of those comments where the translation is basically fine but I’m mentioning it just in case a slight difference in framing from the original is unintentional.
I would say 勝ち抜いた先に闘いたいって思う相手もいた would technically be closer to like, “there were opponents I wanted to fight later in the tournament (i.e. after advancing here, if that had happened)” - like 先 as in ahead of (in the future), and 勝ち抜いた as in having won and advanced. 先 is one of those words with various connotations that can be confusing until somehow it’s intuitive, so I don’t really know why I know this. I guess I would say that 先 as in the past would be only when it’s on it’s own? Like “先, I did X” would mean I did X a little while ago, but in other contexts it would connote more the like, “ahead of, in front of” kind of feeling, like what’s ahead of you from that standpoint. And so can mean the future when facing a future prospect, like in this example.

The second half is also interesting. From the way she says it… (because she pauses between それに向けて and より一層) I feel like それ is referring to the loss, and the 節目, like maybe roughly “but… processing that, my motivation is increased”
But I’m not 100% sure.

I would say the translation is right. She gestures to where she still has chop marks, so perhaps it’s one of those cases of gesturing meaning the grammar can get away with even more elision than usual…

But yeah in any case I feel like she was resetting back into general promo mode after the candy interlude, it just turned out the rest of the promo was only “she was strong I’m gonna eat candy and sleep.”

In the video I would say it’s clearer (particularly from the difference キングダムなんかの火) that she’s referencing a particular 火 from Kingdom, but not really remembering it.
I haven’t read Kingdom either, but after some searching around, I think probably she’s referring to a famous line: 「火を絶やすでないぞォ」which I believe is a cool guy about to die line like “don’t you dare let the (metaphorical) fire go out” to a rival or heir or similar.
So that’s what I would say she’s comparing her situation to - she’s inherited Aino’s fire in this tournament.
I would go with something like “what was it? that, like ‘fire’ from Kingdom.”
I believe Kingdom famously does not have an official English translation (though I heard it was licensed recently) because of the ridiculously daunting length, so chances are none of your readers will particularly care about getting the reference.

She interrupts herself and swaps out the ただの姫 phrase here. I would smooth it out like:
“And then the princess will become the princess… The Princess of Princess will win the Princess Cup and become just literally a princess. Although putting it that way it does feel like a bit of a step down… I’ll work hard to become the Top of Princess!”
(or Top Princess if you prefer, since that “of” is definitely sneaking in there only by way of Japanese grammar understandably not caring about that of English…)

Granted she’s not quoting the part I found, but as I understand it that character Shin was on the receiving end of the quote I found, and so since this quote literalizes how I understood that whole thing to go down (from the protagonist’s perspective), I’ll take it as a win!

(P.S. small HYPE translation update: I was hoping to start over the long weekend, but I ended up - not exactly busy but certainly preoccupied with other things and didn’t. Hope to start in on it at least enough to get a better understanding of the workload soon though!)

Finished the August 2 TPC show, so we’re finally in August! I really have been basically a month behind for forever, huh…

First match with comments on this one was Konatsu and Suzume vs Shino and Uta, which actually, as it turns out, was a homecoming match for Konatsu. I can’t say I remember anything about the match now, though… (But Konatsu lost).

Konatsu and Suzume’s comments:

Konatsu: “Today in Hamamatsu, I had a homecoming tag match for my first homecoming show, and I had my beloved Suzume-san right beside me, but even though we fought carrying the honor of Hamamatsu on our backs, we lost to Shizuoka… Even though I had a strong ally at my side, in the end, I still couldn’t win by my own strength. But it was fun. Thank you very much.”

Suzume: “Since her debut match, I’ve been able to fight together with Konatsu in the ring, and this time was our first time fighting as a tag team. I really felt that pro wrestling is so much fun, but even more than that, I felt a lot of frustration, and I’m painfully aware that that’s how you grow stronger, so next time, I want to be standing next to Konatsu when she gets her hand raised at the end after winning by her own power. Thank you very much.”

Then the first tournament match was Haru vs Himawari. I was torn on who to root for in this! It was nice that they gave the chance for one of them to actually make it past the first round, though. And in the end, Haru was the one who came out on top.

Haru’s comments:

Haru: "In my first match in the Tokyo Princess Cup, I beat HIMAWARI-san and advanced to the next round. This was my first singles match with HIMAWARI-san since the very first Next Generation Tournament. A proper singles match. I’ve wanted it the whole time. Over the past two years, I won a tournament last year, and challenged for a title.

This was a bit tricky: “もうなんかとにかくなんか自分で言うのもあれだけど、本当に躍進の年みたいな感じだったから.”

“I mean, in any case, it may sound a bit much coming from me, but I really feel like I’ve made a lot of progress this year. I’ve been wondering this whole time when I was going to have my chance to get revenge against HIMAWARI-san, and then by the luck of the draw, I ended up with her as my opponent. I was so grateful for my stroke of luck. I finally got to show HIMAWARI-san my current self, and faced her head-on. I’m so happy that I managed to get a solid win today. Next will be Miu-san in Shinagawa.”

This was a bit tricky to translate: “去年は初戦敗退しちゃったけど、次に進めるから未詩さんは本当に大きいしヤバいけど、この勢いは止めずに未詩さんに勝って、進んで進んで優勝してタイトルに挑戦したいなと思います.”

“Last year I lost in the first round, but since I’m moving on to the next round, Miu-san really looms large and scary, but I won’t let her stop my momentum—I’m going to beat Miu-san and advance, and advance again, and win the whole thing and then challenge for the title."

Himawari’s comments:

HIMAWARI: "I lost. To participate in the tournament this year for the first time, I worked really hard starting from the qualifying rounds to get to this point. And to do that, I even had to get past the scary wall that was Pom-san, only to lose to my genmate Haru. It’s so frustrating.”

This was another tricky one for English: “でもなんか悔しいって思えるぐらいなんかこうちゃんとぶつかりあえたから.”

“But I guess feeling this frustrated means that we had a proper fight. Having a singles match with Haru for the first time in two years, I could really feel just how much she’s grown. I felt happy, too. But my emotions are all pretty jumbled up right now.”

This was also a bit tricky: “だからこそハルにはこのままトーナメントもちろん次、未詩さんっていうめちゃめちゃ分厚い壁だと思うですけど、そこにも気遅れしないで、ぶち当たって勝ってほしいなって思うから同期として.”

“That’s why, as her genmate, I want Haru to keep going in this tournament, and of course she has Miu-san next, who’s a super tough wall, but I hope she doesn’t back down there, either, and charges right at her and gets the win. I’m going to keep cheering her on."

Then Arisu faced Misao, which was one of the matches I felt truly torn on… I always root for Misao automatically, but also I was kind of wanting Arisu to take the whole tournament (if my other choices didn’t happen), so that meant she needed to advance here… Sorry Misao!

Arisu’s comments:

Arisu: "I did it! I won! No, this is huge. It’s so huge. I beat the hero.”

I think she may be referring to ひらがなまっする and its predecessor マッスル, or maybe more specifically Muscle Sakai/Super Sasadango Machine’s role within the Hiragana Muscle/Muscle brand. I know that he’s one of Misao’s biggest influences, and it’s obvious that Hype takes a lot of inspiration from Hiragana Muscle.

That said, I couldn’t remember this coming up specifically in any recent comments or anything… The transcriber seems to think she’s referring to Misao’s comment about becoming the GM. I always took that comment itself as being kind of Hiragana Muscle-adjacent, too, because DDT’s GM Hisaya Imabayashi was really heavily involved in that, and Hiragana Muscle ended when Imabayashi officially stepped down from his full-time role as GM, so it felt to me like maybe Misao envisioned for herself a similar role with Hype in TJPW.

But I dunno. That’s my best guess at what hiragana and katakana could be referring to here. But maybe there’s something else I’m overlooking…

“What was it, something hiragana—not hiragana, something katakana. Something like, ‘if I win the tournament, I want to become katakana something or other’ (probably Misao’s GM comment). I don’t really understand, but I have my own reasons for wanting to win it. And that’s to win at the Aizu show in September and bring the trophy back home to Aizu. Yesterday, my dad actually came to my house just to tell me, ‘Do your best in the tournament,’ and then he went right back home to Aizu. Because of that, I seriously refused to give up until the very end. I don’t usually express my gratitude, but I’m really grateful. So I want to show my family and my dad and everyone cheering me on that I’m a winner. And that’s why I’m going to win. Thank you."

(Your next opponent is Yamashita)

“Yes. But I’m actually happy about it. If I beat Yamashita-san, that’d be super cool, right? That would make me super cool. It’ll probably boost my confidence by a lot, so I’m not scared. I’m gonna surpass her. I’m winning.”

Misao’s comments:

Misao: "I lost to Arisu in the first round. I’m so pathetic, and I’m so disappointed. Well, I don’t think I was careless, but it just shows how much stronger Arisu has gotten, far more than I anticipated. So today’s loss is incredibly frustrating, bitter, and sad, but hey—it just gave Hyper Misao more depth. I’m viewing it as a positive. I absolutely won’t let this loss go to waste, and someday I’ll seriously get my win back from Arisu. And I am not giving up on becoming the general manager, the GM.”

Struggled a bit with conveying the メキメキ stuff here in English: “私、3年以内にGMになりたいと思いますので、この後、私がこの深みを増した状態でメキメキメキメキメキメキ強くなるのをみなさん、見守ってください.”

“I aim to become the GM within three years, so from this point on, with my new added depth, I am going to get strong so fast you won’t know what hit you, so please watch me. And when I finally become the GM, I’ll deliver an even more fun TJPW to you all, so please look forward to that! That’s it!"

Then Arai faced Kamiyu, and I was rooting for Kamiyu but didn’t think she had much of a chance at beating Arai right now. And… I was right .

Arai’s comments:

Arai: "I beat Kamifuku-san in my first match. Hmm, this was my third? time fighting Kamifuku-san in a singles match.”

“And somehow, every time we fight, whether I win or lose, I’m left with a lingering frustration, or rather she’s a wrestler who uses the same moves, like a Big Boot, and her career is much longer than mine, so during our matches and such, there’s often a part of me that ends up really digging in my heels. That’s why even though I won today, and I was able to win after hitting a Finally at the end, I still have a lot of frustration left. I can’t say for sure that I’ll always be able to fight her and win. I still feel like I have a long way to go, so from here, I want to fight Kamifuku-san even more, and steal the things she’s good at, like her Big Boot.”

“Yes, and when the tournament bracket was being set, Wakana-chan said she wanted to fight me if she advanced, and Suzume-san said the same thing. It made me happy that I’d become the kind of wrestler that people would say that about, though I couldn’t admit it at the time." (laughs) “But after the match, I happened to come across Wakana-chan. Her gaze was intense. This is the Wakana-chan I knew—I fought her last year, too—and I had a strong sense of that same dangerous feeling from her. I’m going to stay incredibly focused, and keep climbing up another rung higher and higher, and get to a point where I’m able to challenge for Mizuki-san’s belt again! I’m going to do my best!”

Kamiyu’s comments:

Kamifuku: "I lost, huh. Losers always have something to say about all of this.”

This was a bit tricky (though the video helped clarify her point to me, I think): “負けといてなんか語るのはなんかちょっとあれかなと思うんだけど。私もう本当に嫌いなの、トーナメントという労働が。これだけでこういうふうに(コメント幕の線をトーナメント表の山組みになぞらえて)なるだけで、心臓がやられんの、この歳になってきて.”

“But losing and then talking about it just feels kinda weird, y’know? I really hate it, the tournament grind. I’m at the age where just seeing this," (she traces a line on the comments backdrop that mimics advancing in a tournament bracket) "isn’t good for my heart. Recently, I haven’t wanted to put any strain on my heart.”

This was a bit tricky: “こことか あんま来たことないし。これ以上もう少しおばさんに労ってほしいって気持ちになっちゃいますね.”

“I don’t really come here much anyway. It just makes me want to be cared for a little more as an old lady. Summer isn’t just about tournaments; there’s plenty to do. Enoshima is also bustling, so everyone, please come to Fujisawa. Goodbye."

Then the main event was Shoko vs Rika, where I feel like you and I might’ve had divided opinions, rodan… I was rooting for Rika because I thought it’d be fun for her to have a rematch with Mizuki for the title. That said, I can’t complain about Shoko getting the win here, either.

Here’s the post-match:

Nakajima: “I have an impression of Hamamatsu as the town that got crushed the year the first Godzilla movie came out… and today, I feel like I crushed Rika Tatsumi. This summer, my resolve feels a bit different than before. Because I’m a champion dual-wielding belts, I can’t lose to anyone. The main character of this summer isn’t Mizuki. It’s not Yuki Arai, either. Nor is it Miu Watanabe, nor anyone else. It’s Shoko Nakajima!”

Shoko’s comments:

Nakajima: "I got past the first round. I’m in the toughest block to advance in. I have Mizuki next. I have both the tag belt and the MLW singles belt. I’ve always wanted to face the PoP champion Mizuki while holding a singles belt.”

This was difficult: “このタイミングで勝って、その先のベルトのことも見ています.”

“Winning now puts that belt within my sights in the future. I am absolutely going to win the tournament this summer. Please give me your support."

(Looking back, how was your one-on-one match with Tatsumi?)

"I feel like we face each other at key moments quite a bit. I think I have a losing record against her, Rika. But I feel like I finally got my revenge; paid back what I owed.”

The very last part of this was a bit tricky; I wasn’t sure what she meant by 夏オーバー… “でもやっとリベンジ、借りは返したって感じです。ドラゴンもまたいで通る大怪獣、夏オーバーにします.”

“The Big Kaiju, whom dragons step past out of clear revulsion, is going to surpass the summer."

Rika’s comments:

Tatsumi: "Sigh… this is the block where winning is hell, and losing is hell. If it’s gonna be hell either way, then I wanted to advance! I’ve fought Shoko so many times, at so many important moments.”

This was a bit confusing at first: “凄さは従順承知していたのに、今日の翔子が一番強くて凄かったです.” Then I wondered if the 従順承知 was perhaps a typo, so I googled it to see if anything would come up, and I got results for 重々承知, which seemed like much more likely phrasing…

“I know full well how amazing she is, but today she was stronger and more amazing than ever. I’m not the kind of person who will let things end here. So even though I’ll be taking my summer vacation a little early, I’m not giving up.”

Struggled with this: “そして引き続き、私に期待をしてくれているファンのみなさんと一緒にどうやって幸せになっていけるか、幸せになることを考えて戦っていきたいと思います.”

“And I want to keep fighting, and keep thinking about how I can find happiness, and how I will find happiness, together with all of the fans who are counting on me."

And that’s it for that one.

This is one of those annoying cases where I think the translation is fine as written for what was said, and that might well indeed be what was meant, but something about the phrasing and how it was said made me feel like a slightly different meaning was intended.

I felt like she was trying to say, that for the first time since Konatsu’s debut match, they were today able to fight together in the ring like this, and that it was also their first time tagging together. Which seems to be supported by cagematch (since both participating in Yoppy’s graduation match isn’t exactly having a match together in quite the same way).

I guess to try to explain where that impression might be coming from, the 以来 is teeing you up as a listener for a handful of specific kinds of possibilities, and I guess I just got to thinking that 小夏とこうやってリングで一緒に戦うことができて feels sort of not quite right among those possibilities, since as phrased it feels like a ずっと type of deal but the こうやって and the できて feel more like they’re inflecting towards the specialness of the occasion. Like those parts feel more like she’s talking about the current match to me.
And then in the next clause there’s a much more explicit framing of how the occasion is special with the 初めて and stuff even though it’s not quite in a place that lines up with the 以来 and so I guess it feels like maybe markers like the 初めて got muddled between the developing clauses and perhaps in trying to phrase two only slightly different ways that the occasion is cool it didn’t get worded 100% strictly clearly.

… But who knows, since it’s always impossible to know if my instincts in that kind of situation are correct or if a native would be like “uh no she clearly said XYZ don’t overthink it.” So I go back and forth endlessly on confidence level. (and in the end it doesn’t really matter at all)

My attempt if I were right in the interpretation would be:
“(Not) since her debut match have I been able to fight together with Konatsu in the ring like this, and this was our first time fighting as a tag team.”

I would say that Hiragana Muscle doesn’t have anything to do with it - it’s just as simple as Arisu is trying to remember (probably for comedic effect although she sells it pretty deadpan) the word “GM” - or you know, how she would be hearing it in her head, Or slightly more charitably, she may well have specifically the definitely katakana and hard to remember full version (which Misao does say in the ring) in mind: ジェネラルマネージャー.
This whole chunk she’s meaning to say “what was it again, she wanted to win the tournament and become such-and-such, that katakana word whatever it was.” She just happens to accidentally say hiragana first instead of katakana and then immediately corrects herself. I would say the hiragana part is just a verbal slip and nothing more.
To us English-speakers working from a transcript, it’s odd to call “GM” a katakana word, so the natural inference about what she’s talking about isn’t obvious, but to her, she heard a foreign-sounding word the meaning of which she doesn’t know, so it’s カタカナのやつ - as in like "that thing she said in katakana / that katakana word’ where if she could remember it she would just say “general manager.”

For this part:
I would say that I think it should be more like roughly “Do losers really have anything to say in these interviews?”
The あんの I would say is a contracted あるの, as in “負けた人はなんか喋ることあるの?” as in like, she’s being asked to comment on the match as though she has something to say, and she’s questioning that.

I’m not sure either… I think from the sense I get of オーバー it would mean more like, “The Big Kaiju is going to be overbooked this summer” like - she’s going to be so successful in different areas that she overdoes it. But it feels like the transcript maybe didn’t catch it right or she mumbled a little too much and there’s a slightly different more obvious thing that she meant, I dunno.

A few random things:

Firstly, TJPW announced that Haruna Neko is graduating and retiring from wrestling (I was afraid of that after she re-injured her knee…:sob:). A fan photographer is collecting comments from fans with the intent of compiling them all and presenting them to Haruna as a graduation gift.

The form to submit them is available in Japanese at the previous link, or in (machine-translated) English here. Any comments sent in English will be translated into Japanese (I’m assuming via machine translation). I submitted one in Japanese (using the English form, haha), and I encourage anyone else to send one in, too! I’m sure it’ll make Haruna happy to receive them even if your Japanese isn’t flawless.

Secondly, my friend had the idea of creating a sort of webring with wrestling fan translation sites/accounts so that we could promote each other’s work outside of the social media ecosystem. I added his new site, Lorecave, to the sidebar of my blog, and he’s linking to my site in the footer of his. I made a post on my site soliciting other translators/essay writers to email me if they’d like their site to be included. I dunno if anyone lurking in this thread would be interested in this, but just in case, I wanted to mention it.

Thirdly, I finally got my translation portion added as a separate document to the Hype 3 folder and also got my friend to create a master doc for all of our translations so that we don’t have to put those in the transcript document. So there is that now! Feel free to add anything to the master translation doc!

Alright, with that out of the way, I finished the translation for the August 9 TJPW show, which was the TPC quarterfinals. This also was Ivy Steele’s final TJPW show (for now).

She teamed up with Kira and faced Toga and Chika, which actually became a nice way to revisit Toga’s and Ivy’s mini rivalry. Toga managed to get her win back, which meant Ivy took a loss on her way out, which is, I suppose, traditional.

Ivy and Kira’s comments were mostly in English (I assume with Fumirin translating?):

Kira: “Yes, so, your last match?”

Ivy: “Yeah, I’m really glad that my last match would be with all of my favorite people.”

Kira: “Awww!”

Ivy: “I’m a little disappointed that I didn’t get the win for us and so… to say goodbye, but… I’m still happy. We got to make some cool memories.”

Kira: “I mean, because you lost, that now means you have to come back to get even, right?”

Ivy: “Oh, exactly. And, me and Toga are still 1 and 1 in singles matches, so I guess I have to come back to break the tie. I guess that’s just how it goes.”

Kira: “So, plans for a singles against Toga? Maybe a… tournament?”

Ivy: “I definitely hope so.”

Kira: “We’ll have to see.” (after the translation) “Is there anything you want to say to everyone who has supported you while you’ve been in Japan?”

Ivy: “Oh, absolutely! Everyone, thank you so much for everything!” (in Japanese) “Thank you so much! Thank you for showing me such kindness. This isn’t a ‘sayonara’! It’s a ‘see you later’. I’m looking forward to it.”

The Japanese at the end didn’t make it into the transcript, but I didn’t really have much trouble understanding just from listening.

After that, the next match with comments was Miu vs Haru, which was a TPC match. I don’t remember this one much now, but it went about as expected, which is to say that Haru got slaughtered.

Miu’s comments:

Miu: “I won my quarterfinals singles match against Haru! With regards to facing Haru, obviously there’s a big experience gap between us, and she’s still in high school. But I could tell she was really fired up because it was her last summer as a high schooler. She won last year’s Next Generation Tournament, and I think this summer is huge for her. It’s the biggest summer of her life thus far. But fighting her today made me realize that she’s someone who’s going to grow more and more from here on out, so I’m really looking forward to what’s next for her. In the future, I hope we can cultivate a relationship as wrestlers who push each other to get even better together. But I put an end to Haru’s summer. Yay!”

Haru’s comments:

Kazashiro: "In the quarterfinals of the Princess Cup, I had a singles match with Miu-san… and I lost. But even though I lost, I think I’ve steadily gotten stronger than I was last year. Last year, I lost in the first round, but this year, I made it to the quarterfinals.”

“I want to believe that shows how much I’ve grown, but frankly I still have so far to go before I’ve caught up to her. I’m nowhere near Miu-san’s level. I can’t even say that; I’m really at the lowest rung… It’s been about a year and a half since I’ve fought Miu-san, and I’ve undoubtedly grown, and I’ve undoubtedly gotten stronger, but really still feel so inexperienced.”

Struggled a bit with the ポイント part of this: “でも今日いまの状態で風城ハルとして未詩さんと闘えたことはすごいポイント、風城として生きていくなかでのポイントになったかなって思うので.”

“But I think fighting Miu-san today as the wrestler I am now was a really big point in my favor. My Princess Cup is over, but my last summer as a high school student isn’t over yet. I still have about half a year left. I want to refine my moves even more, and grow even more than I have already."

Then Yuki Arai faced Wakana, which was yet another slaughter. I also don’t really remember this one much…

Arai’s comments:

Arai: "Round 2, I made it through! Yay! I fought Wakana Uehara-chan, but I faced her in the tournament last year, too, so this was a rematch from that time. Even though Wakana-chan is my junior, I feel like she’s been growing incredibly fast, and after fighting her two years in a row, it made me wonder what she’s going to be like another year from now. So I want to ensure that I’ll be able to beat her again a year later, too.”

This first sentence was a bit tricky, and the second one was one where I doubted my English wrestling language knowledge… Maybe there’s a better way to phrase this in English? I dunno. “わかなちゃんに負けじと成長したいなって、後輩ですけどとても刺激をもらったし。今日はわかなちゃんの絞りで節々が痛いのでゆっくり休んで、次に備えたい 思います.”

“I want to grow so that I won’t lose to Wakana-chan. Even though she’s my junior, she really pushed me. Today my joints really hurt thanks to Wakana-chan’s submissions, so I’m going to rest up and prepare for the next round. Thank you very much!"

Wakana’s comments:

Uehara: "In the 2025 Cup, I lost in the quarterfinals. I lost to Arai-san last year, too, and I felt incredibly frustrated that I couldn’t overcome the wall that was Yuki Arai-san. But it’s not like I haven’t grown since last year, and since then I’ve studied things in my own way, and I’m confident that I’ve made progress, but Arai-san has gained even more momentum, and I couldn’t close the gap between us. Fighting her today, I really felt that incredible momentum. But after the match was over, when I stood opposite her, part of me wants her to win this year since I lost to her. As I fought her, I felt that she really might actually win the tournament this year.”

Struggled a lot with figuring out what she was trying to say here: “私は今年、台風の目になれなかったんですけど、荒井さんに優勝して欲しいです.”

“I couldn’t weather the eye of the storm this year, but I want Arai-san to win the whole thing."

Then Arisu faced Miyu, which I remember being a nail-biter for me because I really, really wanted Arisu to win… And she did! She beat the ace! Yay!

Arisu’s comments:

Arisu: "I won! When my match with Yamashita-san was set, all of these memories of my past just came flooding back.”

This was a bit tricky: “デビューしたての時のシングルでは手も足もでなくて今できることを精いっぱいでしがみつくしかなかったし、最近ではタッグベルトを直接負けて失って、メチャメチャ悔しい思いをしたし.”

“When I’d just debuted, I couldn’t do a thing in singles matches, and I had to cling to what I could do with everything I had. And recently, when I lost us the tag belts, I felt absolutely gutted. But I don’t think the person I am today would be here if it weren’t for that past. And the one who made me feel like that is Yamashita-san. She’s truly saved me.”

This was a bit tricky: “こんなこと言うのはあれだけど、山下さんと闘うと自分の中にある知らない熱が出て、マジでこういうことを言っていいかわからないけど楽しい.”

“It might sound extreme to say that, but fighting Yamashita-san brings out a passion inside of me that I didn’t know was there. I don’t know if I can really say this, but it’s fun. She gets me so fired up, I want to keep fighting Yamashita-san, and keep going head-to-head with her, for a long time to come. And I, Arisu Endo, am going to conquer this tournament. Thank you for supporting me."

Miyu’s comments:

Yamashita: "I lost. Today, Endo beat me. I’m frustrated, but all I can do is shift my mindset and tell myself that I absolutely won’t lose the next one. But I’ve had a lot on my mind this tournament, and as I said during the press conference, I wanted to fight Rika (Tatsumi).”

This part was a bit tricky. Seems like “バッド” might have started to catch on as slang among the roster, haha: “リカも負けちゃって、私も負けちゃって全然叶えなかったので、今年のサマーはめっちゃバッドなんですけど、私の夏、トーナメントは終わって、めちゃめちゃ悔しいけど、この悔しさを力に変えて進化していこうという気持ちには切り替えられているので.”

“But Rika also lost, and I did, too, so this summer has been like really bad. My summer, my tournament run, is over. I’m super frustrated, but I’ve changed the way I look at it, and I’m going to turn this frustration into a strength and use it to evolve from here. But for today, I lost. I lost to Arisu. And that is exactly what is going to make me get even stronger."

Then the main event was Shoko vs Mizuki. I’m afraid I had to root against Shoko once again… At the time, I still thought there was a chance of Mizuki winning and nominating Itoh to challenge her… But the match was really good, and even though Mizuki lost, I couldn’t be too disappointed, because Shoko deserved it, too.

Shoko also very kindly invited Ivy into the ring to say some last words to the TJPW crowd, and I was really impressed by Ivy’s Japanese, especially since she was clearly emotional. She really has learned a lot just in the short time that she’s been here.

Here’s the post-match:

Nakajima: “Mizuki… Mizuki! The next time you and I fight one-on-one, you’ll put that belt on the line for me, right? Wait for me.” (Mizuki leaves) “That was tough. It was tough, but fun. My objective this year is to win the whole thing. I won’t waver. No matter who comes forward, I’m the Big Kaiju! Today marks the last match… for now—of an important member of our TJPW circle, Ivy. Maybe she’ll come out for a bit. Ivy!” (Ivy enters the ring) "Ivy, we might not have faced each other much in matches, but… Oh, Ivy speaks Japanese really well, so I’ll speak entirely in Japanese, okay? It’d make me happy if my feelings are conveyed.”

This was a bit tricky to put into English: “一生懸命でマジメで、いっぱいいっぱい道場で練習してる姿、一緒に汗をかけたこと、すごく大事な思い出です.”

“Seeing you earnestly working so hard, putting in so much practice at the dojo, working up a sweat together, those are really valuable memories for me. It’s a precious memory for me. I’m sure that everyone else feels the same. So please come drop in anytime, okay? This place is your home. Can you say a few last words?"

Ivy: "Yes, hello. I’ll try speaking a bit of Japanese. When I came to Japan, it was actually kind of scary. I’d only been studying Japanese for two years, so speaking it… I hadn’t had much practice.”

The transcript just had this for the next part: “でも励ましてくれて、ありがとうございます…!” But I’m pretty sure she said something about being homesick right before it, so this is what I heard:

“But whenever I became homesick, TJPW always made me happy.” (cries) “Thank you so much for encouraging me…! I was always a bit nervous about interacting with fans at autograph sessions. I’m not very good at speaking Japanese, so I always… um… I want to study Japanese. So that I can use it to talk to fans. So, thank you so much for your kindness!”

Then she said something that I only partially caught (and it seems like the transcriber was in a similar boat, as they just left it out entirely…). Here’s all that the transcript had: “TJPW、全部、本当にありがとうございました!”

“[???] I’m going back home to the UK, but [???]. TJPW, thank you so much for everything!"

Nakajima and Ivy embrace.

Nakajima: “Ivy, whether it’s in your country or here, please have a match with me someday with one of these things (a belt) on the line. I’ll be waiting. Thank you!” (they shake hands) “Ivy, everyone loves you!” (an “Ivy!” chant erupts from the crowd) “Then, can I ask everyone in the crowd for a favor? When I say ‘Ivy’, I want you all to say that you love her… So can you all say” (in English) “I love you?”

And so Nakajima closes the show with: “Ivy!” “I LOVE YOU!”

Shoko’s comments:

Nakajima: "Yes! I made it to the semifinals. I was able to achieve my long-held wish, which was to have a match with Mizuki while she has the Princess of Princess belt and while I’m holding the MLW belt. But today’s match really felt like just a stop on the way.”

This was a bit tricky: “実際にあのベルトを懸けている時の瑞希とはまたスタイルが違うなと感じたので、私がそこまでたどり着くことが大前提ですけど、次試合をする時はチャンピオンで闘って欲しいなと思っているので.”

“I felt a different style from Mizuki compared to when that belt is actually on the line, so making it that far is an absolute requirement for me, and the next time we fight, I want her to do it as the champion. Yeah. Today was just a stop along the way. And that’s why I absolutely need to find a way to get to Mizuki one more time."

Mizuki’s comments:

Mizuki: “I had so many things I wanted to do after I won the tournament, but even though I’m feeling incredibly frustrated, I want Shoko-san to win. I want her to give me my chance for revenge. But even though I lost the tournament, I still have lots of goals. And in any case, I’m going to keep doing my best to get stronger.”

(There was some talk of the next match between you two having the belt on the line)

“Honestly, I myself wanted to say that I wanted to put the belt on the line, but even though I can’t say that, the frustration is still there, so I want Shoko-san to win the whole thing, and I’m going to get even stronger and then face her with this belt on the line. I want her to win the tournament.”

(Even if she doesn’t win, would you still want to get your revenge in the form of a title match?)

“Yes, I do. Because I hate to lose. Plus, I’ve always wanted to beat Shoko-san, so I don’t want it to end like this.”

And that’s it for that one.

I think the direct meaning would be something a bit more along the lines of like “was a noteworthy point in the course of my life as Kazashiro”
Like I would say ポイント in a context like this is less likely to be “point” as in points you win, and more likely to be “point” like how a Japanese textbook would use it - a noteworthy point of attention.

I think she’s saying that although she’s still far far behind Miu her match with her here will still be looking back a noteworthy point in her career.

Apparently from what I can tell , 台風の目 is used in Japanese sometimes as a metaphor for someone who - like the eye of the storm, is relatively calm / unassuming, but strongly influences what’s going on around them.
I’m not sure if the transcript got exactly what she was saying here (but I can’t hear any better). But in any case as written I suppose she would be saying that she didn’t manage to become the 台風の目 in that sense. Like, she lost out on being the focal point. Is maybe a way to put it in English.

I would say here in context she’s talking specifically about singles matches with Miyu, and getting pinned by her to lose the tag team championship. (which does check out as she did have a singles match with her shortly after her debut, and was pinned by her to lose the tag championship).

Trying not to just leave it at “it feels more like this to me,” this is one of those ones where I don’t know exactly why it sounded more that way and not the other to me.
Something about the sense of たて in デビューしたての時のシングル sounding more like “the (specific) singles match I had (with her) when I had still only just debuted” maybe? Or the 直接負けて feeling like it fits most when having a specific victor in mind? I dunno really - I guess one of those cases where the word choice feels like it matches one interpretation where it would maybe fit but be odd in a hard to place way with another interpretation (which are always the most annoying situations for language learners…)

I would say the こんなこと言うのはあれだけど part at the beginning is referring to what she’s about to say rather than what she just said. The マジでこういうことを言っていいかわからないけど later is her reiterating it again. “I don’t know if I should say this but, … I really don’t know if I ought to talk about this, but”
(feels kind of like she’s maybe concerned that she should be playing up the kayfabe element of Miyu being a scary violent opponent more, but I’d say it’s fine - TJPW wrestlers as a whole certainly express similar sentiment all the time about each other…)

I would say that the 私の夏、トーナメントは終わって、 part should be more like something like “My summer - the tournament may be over for me and I’m super frustrated about that, but I’ve changed my outlook.”

As in, the way she says it, the トーナメント is contrastive, and she’s piecing together a sentence about how the rest of her summer at least will be positive.

Yeah hmmm I’m not sure either - definitely one where the sentiment is conveyed though even if the words themselves may or may not be intelligible!

I would say that the 大前提 should ideally be a little more like “obviously I’m presuming I’ll make it that far, but the next time we fight, I want her to fight as champion”

Like I would say she’s saying “the next time we fight (which will be after I win the tournament to earn the shot, it goes without saying that’s what I mean) I want her to fight like champion Mizuki not tournament Mizuki”

Quick update on my part of the HYPE translation: I have gotten a bit busier which is somewhat awkward timing, but it shouldn’t be a problem. I broke the seal on starting to actually translate yesterday and did a page and it felt like it went smoothly and was pretty fun.
I’m composing it just in a txt file for now - probably what I’ll do is set aside chunks of time to churn through it that way, then give it a once-over or two (and post my own “this part was tricky!” comments in here for once!) then put it in the doc you made. But I can put it there sooner or handle it a different way if you’d prefer of course.

Yeah, that’s fine! There’s no immediate rush, I don’t think. I feel like as long as we make steady progress, we should finish it soon enough. The other person working on the translation did have a question, or rather they were wondering about how to translate ウラ地球星 for consistency’s sake, and they had an idea for how to do that, so hopefully they’ll share their thoughts in here soon.

I… don’t have much confidence for my own ability to help answer questions, but I suppose I can try .

I’m kind of fighting for my life keeping up with the regular TJPW translations, or I’d offer to help more…

Speaking of which, I finished the TPC semifinals translation, which was from August 17.

The first semifinal match was Arisu vs Arai, where I was rooting for Arisu really strongly. I didn’t think this was going to be Arai’s year, so I was pretty sure she was losing the tournament, but I wasn’t sure if she’d be losing in the finals or not. At this point, Arisu was my number one choice to take the whole thing, so I was pulling for her hard. And she did it! She finally got her first win over Arai!

The second semifinal was Miu vs Shoko, which I felt a bit torn on… On the one hand, I really wanted Shoko to get her win back from Miu, as she’d been losing to her a lot in high stakes singles matches lately… But since Arisu was going to be the other person in the final, I wanted both Miu and Shoko to lose there, so some part of me wanted Miu to win here because she had a bit more of an established rivalry with Arisu, so I thought it’d be more satisfying for Arisu to beat her… Well, I got part of my wish. Miu did indeed beat Shoko, though her selling was so good, I ended up barely able to watch the match because I was too stressed out that she’d shoot injured her leg or something. But it seems like everything was fine.

Here’s the post-match:

Miu: "…Somehow, I won! I’ve fought Nakajima-san countless times just this month and the last month alone, and I see her more than anyone else at the dojo. I say this all the time, but if Nakajima-san weren’t here, I wouldn’t feel a need to push myself this hard. I’m so, so glad I got to have a match like this with someone I respect so much, where we push each other to get better. I have so much I want to say… but I’m the one who won.”

This first sentence here was just tricky as usual to put into English, and then this second bit was also tricky because I couldn’t think of the best way to render “おー” in English: “気持ちと色んな思いで勝てた、決勝に進めます! 決勝、どんな相手がきても私はプリンセスなので…(場内の反応に)『おー』で合ってる?”

“I won with my preparedness and all of my feelings, and I’m advancing to the final! In the final, no matter who I face, I’m a princess, so…" (to the crowd reaction) “Is ‘ah’ the right response? I’m a princess, so I absolutely won’t lose. I’m going to win the whole thing. Arisu, let’s fight at Korakuen!”

Endo: (entering the ring) "Miu-san, you were so cool! But I, too, have finally made it here.”

The way this was phrased was a bit tricky: “初めて東京女子プロレスにきて、一番になれるチャンスが来た.”

“Since coming to TJPW, my first chance to become number one has arrived. I’m going to win and become the top woman of the summer!"

Miu: "Arisu, you were so cool in rounds 1 and 2 as well.”

Another slightly tricky one: “ここから今年の夏の有栖はどれくらい強くなってるのか、1週間後が楽しみです.”

“I’m looking forward to seeing just how much stronger you’ll be able to get this summer after next week. The two of us will make 2025 the best summer ever for TJPW!"

The two of them shake hands, and the Osaka show comes to an end.

Arisu’s comments:

Endo: "This is my first time making it into the final four, and sure enough, Arai showed up at a pivotal point for me.”

Struggled a bit with this: “くじ引きとかで引いちゃう、荒井運が強いっていうのか.”

“Like, she just draws the best lots or something; or you could say that her luck is incredibly strong. Every single time I’ve had a match with Arai at a crucial point, I’ve lost. But I made it to the final four, and I beat Yuki Arai in the semifinals, and for the first time, the overall victory feels within reach! I’m so happy. I really feel like that trophy suits me, after all. I haven’t worn much pink thus far, but I really love pink these days. I’m going to win the tournament, take the trophy in hand, and then I’ll become the woman of the summer."

(Did beating Arai, whom you hadn’t been able to beat before, bring some sort of change in you?)

“Yes. Fighting Arai, I really felt myself getting more and more competitive. And I think that really exploded out of me today. Yuki Arai has really pushed me to grow again and again. But, if we fight again, I’m gonna win.”

(Your opponent in the final is Miu)

"Miu-san also wears pink.”

Struggled a bit with adapting this Japanese phrasing into English: “やっぱ未詩さん、道場で背中を追ってるっていうのかな.”

“I guess you can say I’ve been following her footsteps at the dojo. And precisely because I’ve been watching her, I want to show her a version of myself that she’s never seen before."

(You said you wanted to bring the trophy back home to Aizuwakamatsu)

“When I win, I’ll be bringing it back home to Aizu, yes! I’m absolutely going to bring that trophy to Aizu! Just watch me!”

Arai’s comments:

Arai: “Today was the semifinals, Arisu Endo vs Yuki Arai… But once again, I couldn’t make it to the final. I lost to Arisu-chan. We’ve fought at so many different points up to now. We’ve also had a title match, and most recently, we fought for the right to challenge for the title. Always, whenever it comes down to the wire, I’d be the one to win, so of course I’m really disappointed… She’s the closest to me… we also debuted close to each other. We’ve trained together, and done a lot together, more than anyone else… so I’m frustrated, but I’m happy that I got to fight Arisu-chan all the way in the semifinals, and I’m thinking, ‘Next time, I’m definitely gonna win,’ and, ‘Arisu Endo, go win this thing!’ Next time, I’ll be winning again.”

(So Endo is your rival?)

“Yes, ‘rival’ is the term that fits the best. Fighting her again today, I really felt that.”

(You haven’t had an easy time making it past the final four)

"That’s true. I’ve made it this far three years in a row, but I’ve never gotten past this point all the way to the final. Next time, next year for sure, I definitely want to get there.”

This was a bit tricky: “次こそ、来年こそ確実にいきたいし、あとツーステップ…決勝にいった後に優勝するっていうツーステップあるけど。来年、両方叶えたいと思います.”

“And then there’s a two-step… making it to the final and then winning it. Next year, I want to achieve both."

Miu’s comments:

Miu: “Yes, I beat Nakajima-san. It’s amazing—I feel like we really get each other, but after fighting each other like this and spending every day, almost every day together, I’ve realized that she still has new tricks to pull out; that there are still sides of her that I don’t know. I’m hurting in so many places right now, but that pain only strengthens my resolve. Making it into the final four, that in itself hasn’t happened since I faced Yuka-san two years ago; this is my first time making it into the finals since then. Yes, so I am absolutely going to get my hands on that new trophy that was introduced the year I made it into the final, that pink trophy that bears the name ‘princess’, and I absolutely won’t lose to Arisu at Korakuen. I’m going to do my best!”

(Your opponent in the final is Endo)

"Yes, Arisu defeated Misao-san and Yamashita-san and Arai.”

“Back when she first debuted, I always had the impression that she couldn’t win singles matches. I feel like everyone probably had the same impression. But by my estimation, Arisu truly is super strong in singles matches, too, and I always believed that she could win. But I’ve always thought that maybe she just couldn’t go into singles matches with the right mindset, like maybe she was operating under the wrong impression that she wasn’t good at them. Arisu Endo is incredibly strong. So I’m really looking forward to seeing what kind of mindset she brings this time, and I’m feeling incredibly determined right now, so I am absolutely going to win the tournament."

Shoko’s comments:

This was a bit tricky: “はい、今日は何かどういう、たぶん偶然か分からないんですけど、デビュー12周年の日で.”

Nakajima: "Yes, today is somehow, well, I dunno if it’s just a coincidence or what, but it’s my 12th debut anniversary. I felt like having the tournament semifinal match now, and having a match with Miu at that, was fate. I thought it was fate. Yesterday, before going to sleep and such, I tried not to get nervous, but I kept thinking about the match as I got into bed.”

This really threw me off because the way it’s written makes it seem like Mizuki is the one with the two belts… “今ベルトを2本巻いてる瑞希にも勝った.”

“I even beat Mizuki while holding two titles. I felt so, so strongly that if I didn’t win the tournament now, when would I? …Yeah, I’m frustrated. I’m disappointed. But even though I’m disappointed, I didn’t hold back one bit. And so, because today is the day that it is, I can say this: I still have ambitions left unfulfilled in my 13th year, so I’m going to keep working hard. That’s all."

(Do you want Miu to win the final?)

Changed my mind like three different times on the best way to word this: “そうですね。その気持ちはやっぱりあります。今日こそは心をへし折ってやれたと思ったんですけど、やっぱり根性がありますからね.”

“Yes. I do feel some of that. I thought today of all days I’d be able to break her spirit, but she’s got some willpower, huh?”

And that’s it for that show.

Oh yeah, I realized a few days ago that I totally forgot to translate the Go Girl 6 poster, lol. Figured I might as well do that now, even though it’s late… I'll throw in the one for Arisu's homecoming show, too.

Welcome to this women-only pro wrestling space!

(Pretty easy one…)

This one just has the show name, which I typically don’t translate because Wrestle Universe, Dramatic DDT, and Cagematch all translate them (sometimes differently). But I thought the design was cute! I think DDT and TJPW have the best-designed wrestling posters in the industry today.

Yeah I dunno exactly what was selling and what wasn’t but one way or another she sure seemed to have a rough time of it that match huh…

I think this one didn’t come out quite right. I believe it should be more like roughly “From here, In one week, I’m looking forward to seeing just how much stronger the Arisu of this summer has become.”
I can see how the clauses happen to be confusing in this case, but in the video,
is contained as the subject, and I would say
would mean “how much stronger has Arisu of this year’s summer gotten?” - as in, how much stronger is current Arisu vs. Arisu of the past, before this year / this summer.
Then the ここから…1週間後が楽しみです is saying that that question is what she’s looking forward to in 1 week’s time.

I think probably she’s talking about herself here, like roughly “I always hit her in chance games - you could say my Arai luck is strong.” Like she frequently draws the lot of encountering Arai at pivotal times.
Brainstorming a way to search to confirm that’s what that phrasing would mean, I searched “じゃんけん運” and it seemed to get plenty of hits, to mean like, luck at winning rock paper scissors. Like that here in context, 荒井運 would be luck at encountering Arai.

I would say this ended up a little more critical than intended, as a small piece didn’t make it in:
シングルで勝てないってずっと言ってる印象があったんですけど
Miu had the impression that back then Arisu was always saying she couldn’t win singles matches.
So she’s saying like, she always believed in her but felt like Arisu wasn’t believing in herself and having trouble because of that.

(even looks painful here in the backstage comments! Ouch! Glad she’s okay!)

Yeah, the key phrase there is “the way it’s written.”
In the video it sounds like
or
or
“Right now I hold two belts. And I beat Mizuki.”

Finally finished the translation for the TPC final, which was on August 23.

The first match on this show was a battle royale for the Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship, guest starring Juri Suzue, who was the champion initially before losing the belt in a definitely fair arm wrestling match with Ram Kaichow. Juri ended up getting her belt back at the end, though (before losing it to Pokotan in another arm wrestling match after the wrestling match). For me, the most interesting part of this one was (predictably) the Raku/Ram drama, as the match kind of ended up pitting them together and introduced a bit of strife into their marital life… (I was a bit sad they didn’t have comments afterward…)

Juri was the only wrestler person in this one to have post-match comments:

(First, can you tell us what you thought when you first stepped into the ring?)

I was really confused by what she meant by 貸し取る in this: “初めて今日リングに立ってドキドキしましたし、こうやってまたベルトを貸し取ることができてよかったです.”

Suzue: "Today was my first time stepping into the ring, so I was really nervous, and I’m glad that I could 貸し取る the belt again like this.”

(Before the match, you lost an arm-wrestling match and had the belt taken from you?)

Suzue: “I’m the top of my class among the girls in elementary school, and I had 100% confidence, but I think there was a bit of foul play there.”

(You also struck a ballet-like pose and hit an axe kick?)

Suzue: "That’s my signature move, called Juri Power. I’m glad that I was able to unveil it today.

(Now that you’ve defended your belt, you’re likely going to face a constant stream of challenges. How are you feeling about it now?)

Suzue: “I’m going to ward them off with Juri Power, and I’m going to give it my all both in my studies and with the belt. Thank you very much. Please look forward to my signature move next time, too.”

Then Toga fought Yuna Manase, which was fun! I like them as a duo. It’s nice to see a little story unfolding here with them. Toga got slaughtered, but she put up a fight.

Both of their comments:

This sentence was a bit tough: “けっこう気合を入れて挑んだつもりなんですけど、全然…すべてを受け止められたうえで、ねじ伏せられたというか.”

Toga: “I really went into it with everything I had, but… she took absolutely everything I threw at her, and wrestled me to the ground. Or rather, when we first faced each other at Ota City, I thought that maybe fighting spirit could get me through it, but there was such a huge gap in ability between us, determination alone didn’t cut it. I’m frustrated, but I still haven’t given up. If we ever have the chance to fight again, I’m absolutely going to win.”

At this point, Manase comes over, calling, “Toga!”

Manase: “Toga! Toga! I had so much fun! How about you?”

Toga: “It was frustrating, but more than that, it was fun.”

Manase: "Yeah, I think pro wrestling is so much fun. So when you said that you were really looking forward to it before today’s match, it made me really happy! At Ota City, and today, too, we stood in opposite corners, but next time, how about fighting next to me?”

“You might feel frustrated, but for me, it’s been five years since I left TJPW. When I left, I went away with the resolution to become a woman who could inspire TJPW. And today, you really inspired me! I want to convey what I’ve learned over the past five years, and I want to learn from you, too. So, for our next match, how about standing next to me and making the TJPW of today an even more interesting place together?"

Toga: “Please!”

Manase: “Alright! Then, Toga, since it’s come to this, I’ll share everything I know with you, so teach me all kinds of things, too! Then let’s do our best together! And with that, Toga, go ahead.”

Toga: “I want to absorb a whole lot from Manase-san, and I also want to get stronger beside you, so the two of us are going to aim for the top!”

Manase: “Way to go! Toga, you rock! Toga, attagirl! Toga! Toga!” (she chants while leaving)

Then Rika, Suzume, and Konatsu teamed up, which was a fun team because Suzume joined TJPW because she admired Rika, and Konatsu joined because she admired Suzume (and was a Yuki Arai fangirl on top of that). Things didn’t exactly go the smoothest for them, though… Aino, Haru, and Uta defeated them.

Rika/Suzume/Konatsu’s comments:

This was a bit tough: “おかしいな。おかしい。なんか、気がついたら子供たちが増えてて。おかしいんですけど、気がついたら増えてて。今日もなんで、何してたんだよ、お前たち。フォローしろよ! フォローしとけよ。何逃げたりしてるんだよ!ダメぞ、そういうとこだぞ!”

Rika: “It’s strange. Really weird. Somehow, before I even realized, there were more kids around. It’s odd, but before I even knew it, there were more of them. Today, what were you guys even doing? Back us up! You have to support the team! Why are you trying to evade responsibility?! It’s no good, doing that!”

Suzume: “No, I’m sorry.”

Konatsu: “If Rika-san hadn’t choked me…”

Rika: “Huh, what was that?”

Konatsu: “If Rika-san hadn’t choked me…”

Rika: “Stop making excuses! That’s just an excuse. You lost. Try harder! So that you can win.”

Konatsu: “I’ll try harder!”

Rika: “We also kept losing and then got stronger that way. So do your best. You, too. Do your best, too.” (she pats Suzume’s back)

Suzume: “I’ll do my best!”

Had a bit of trouble translating the そんな感じで here: “お前も頑張れ、私も頑張るから。そんな感じで、頑張ります.”

Rika: “You do your best, and I’ll do my best, too. In that way, we’ll do our best.”

Suzume: “Next time, we’ll win.”

Rika: “We’re gonna win!”

All: “Yes!”

Yuki/Haru/Uta’s comments:

All: “Yay! We did it! We won!”

Yuki: "I’m so happy! It’s our first Korakuen in a while, like half a year? Has it been half a year? Getting a splendid victory at our first Korakuen in a long time makes me really happy!”

Had trouble with this (doesn’t help that my memory of this match is hazy at this point… Maybe they’re talking about something Rika did?): “でも嬉しいんだけどさ、最後あれちょっと意味わかんない、やばかったよ。なに? あのよく回避したね.”

“But even though I’m happy, that bit there at the end, I don’t really understand, but that was dangerous. What was that? You dodged it so well.”

Uta: “Everyone got mad at me. But it’s your fault!”

Yuki: “Y’know, I’d already dodged it ages ago, but it felt like I was watching a summer horror blockbuster, a horror movie aimed at kids. It was scary.”

Haru: "My defense instinct kicked in.

Yuki: “No but it was fun; fighting along these two rookies. It was a lot of fun.”

Then Mizuki faced Pom, which I remember being fun, though I don’t remember many details besides Pom’s pool toys… (Mizuki won.)

Mizuki’s comments:

Mizuki: “Yeah, Pom-chan’s a girl with a lot of quirks, but I absolutely love that about her. I saw that she wrote that if she beat me, she was going to skip a grade, but I feel like she’s already been this far along this whole time. So getting to fight her today was a lot of fun, and I thought, ‘I’ll eat up Pom’s weirdness and take it all in time and time again!’”

Pom’s comments:

Pom: "Aaah, aaaah! My tummy hurts! Does it hurt so much because of Mizuki-san’s foot (stomp), or because I really went to town munching away at the center of this watermelon to make it into a swim ring? Yeah, well… Mizuki-san is the champion now, right? Getting a rare chance to have a singles match with her, I thought this was my golden opportunity. I haven’t done my summer homework, so I figured I’d make up for that here. But I still couldn’t measure up! I’m disappointed.”

This next part with シャチノスケ was confusing to me because I had no idea who she was talking about and searching for that on google didn’t really help, but then I connected the dots and I’m pretty sure she’s talking about the inflatable dolphin she had with her during the match? Then the question became what pronouns do I use for the dolphin… I wasn’t sure if the name came across as a more masculine or feminine name… I think the only names I can think of with “suke” endings tend to be masculine? So I went with he/him, but I dunno.

“But Shachinosuke isn’t here, right? Where’s Shachinosuke, my tag partner today? Huh? Where’d he go? Do you know? Do you know? You know, Shachinosuke! Where is he? I think I’m going to head out and go looking for Shachinosuke. Might a bit of an endless summer. Bye-bye. Shachinosuke!"

Then Arai faced Maki Itoh…

Going into this match, I wanted Itoh to win because I thought they should save Arai getting her big win over Itoh for a match with higher stakes (like, a Princess of Princess title match, for instance…). So I was kind of surprised and a little deflated to see Arai beat Itoh here. Then the news came out about Itoh’s TJPW contract running out and the result made more sense… It was interesting because I remember commentary talking about how the crowd likes to cheer for the underdog, and it occurred to me that some people were viewing Itoh as the underdog, which was a surprise to me.

I was also surprised that Itoh didn’t really have a proper farewell tour, though maybe she didn’t want one. In hindsight, her last few months had kind of an odd vibe to them, in that she basically fought every single notable rival she had and revisited old story hits (even with Raku, for instance), so I wonder if she actually did do a quiet farewell tour, we just didn’t notice at the time…

Even though Itoh has kind of been a part time wrestler in TJPW as of late, I’m still shocked that she’s gone, and I’m going to miss her. Part of me will always wonder if the original plan for 2024 was for her to win the PoP belt (instead of Miu) if she hadn’t gotten injured then… I’ll always be sad that she never fully finished her story in TJPW.

It is very fitting of Miyu and Itoh, though, that they basically made the exact opposite career decisions at the same time. Miyu fully re-committed to TJPW, basically swearing her life to the promotion when announcing her new backstage job as the “Leader”, and at the same show, Itoh fully left the promotion… Ah, it’s so them, but also so bittersweet… :pensive:

Honestly, I don’t remember anything else about that Arai vs Itoh match now.

Here are Arai’s comments:

Arai: "Finally… I defeated Maki Itoh!”

“With me doing pro wrestling, there were various things that led to it and timings that happened to line up, but at all of those points, Itoh-san was there. At the start, being looked down on and all of that was really tough, and it was hard not being able to do anything well, and fighting Itoh-san or standing on the same side were both draining… but I learned so much from Itoh-san, both in matches and beyond that. TJPW has a lot of wrestlers, so opportunities to do a singles match like this one, especially one with Itoh-san—up until now, we’ve just had the one title match. I always feel like I don’t know when (the next one) will be.”

“When I debuted, Itoh-san said to me, ‘No matter how many years it takes, come crush Maki Itoh’. And this time, I wanted to take those words and face her properly here and show her how much I’ve grown, so I’m really happy that I beat Itoh-san for the first time today, but I don’t feel at all like, ‘Yay! It’s over!’ It just reaffirmed that I’ll still be chasing after her going forward, too. I want to keep chasing after Itoh-san, who is a really important presence to me. I’m really happy that I was able to beat her today."

(How did you interpret the pinky promise after the match?)

Definitely want to double-check this because it feels liable for people to read into: “そうだな…まず、荒井に対して同等というか。いままでは上から見られることしかなかったような気がして。そういう目線で合ったり指だったり、色んなメッセージがこもってたのかなって思って。まずいつもと違った空気が荒井はとても嬉しかったので、幸せでした.”

“Well… it’s probably that she sees me as an equal. Or rather, up until now, it felt like she was looking down on me. I think exchanging a gaze like that and the pinky promise and such, I think it carried several messages. At any rate, the different atmosphere made me really glad, so I’m happy.”

Itoh’s comments:

(I’m just gonna include the Japanese for the same reason as above.)

Itoh: “I don’t have any more comments. I put it all out there in the ring, so reflect on it yourselves! That’s Maki Itoh’s comment. That’s all.”

Then the semi-main was Kyoraku Kyomei, Himawari, and Kaya vs Aja Kong, Kamiyu, Wakana, and Mifu. I don’t remember a whole lot about this match now, but the notable thing that happened was Wakana got a shock victory over Misao, which naturally led to Ober Eats challenging for the tag belts afterward.

Here’s the in-ring:

Uehara: “Misao-san, Nakajima-san, we won! Please let us challenge for your belts one more time!”

Kamifuku: (to Uehara) “Wait a minute. That’s a bit brazen, or rather, I like it, but you’re seriously shameless. They’re senpais, and, ah, sorry, truly.”

Misao: "The two of you combined are 200% shameless! Wakana just went and said it, but you already challenged us once in April in America, and you lost, right? Only a few months have passed since then. What’s changed? To be honest, I thought Ober Eats had already disbanded.”

This was a bit tricky: “だけどきょう8人タッグとはいえ、たまたま8人タッグで勝利とはいえ、アンタたちオーバーイーツに負けて、私、チャンピオンとしてこのまま引き下がれません.”

“But today in this 8-woman tag match, even though it was just a fluke win in an 8-woman tag match, I lost to you guys, Ober Eats, and as the champion, I can’t just back down like this. So, fine. At September 20th in Ota City, let’s fight with the tag belts on the line. We absolutely won’t lose! Is that alright with you?"

Nakajima also gives her the OK.

Uehara: “On September 20 at the Ota City General Gymnasium, Kamifuku-san and I, as Ober Eats, are definitely winning those belts! Please support us!”

Kamiyu/Wakana/Aja/Mifu’s comments:

Kamifuku: "Today, it was the three of us plus Aja-san teaming up.”

Uh oh, here’s a new TJPW translation challenge… pachinko vocabulary… “私のなかではスロットとかパチンコで言ったらパーンと保留玉に金が来たみたいな勝ち方って感じだったんで、まあ気持ちはすごいおおらかな感じで挑みました.”

I did a bit of searching and found someone’s random 2009 pachinko term translation document from a 2012 pachinko forum post. So that helped a bit, though I still really don’t know…

“For me, if you think of it like a slot machine or pachinko, it felt like winning by getting a payout with a reserve ball, so I went into it feeling really relaxed."

This was also a bit tricky: “まあ最初にね、アレでよけい火がついた。何がチャンピオンだから私は変わりましただ、姑息さがより増してたじゃねえかよ.”

Aja: “Well, right from the start, that made me even get even more riled up. What’s with all that, ‘I’m a champion, so I’ve changed’ nonsense? Isn’t that just even more underhanded?”

Ashida: “I’m happy that we won, but…” (looks at Aja)

I also struggled a bit with this (I’m guessing they’re referring to a spot with the 18-liter can? But I don’t remember well enough…):

アジャ「ちゃんと持ってないからだよ。自分で呼んだんだから! でも、あれで普通負けパターンだけどきょう勝った。勝てばいいんだよ」

Aja: “It’s because you didn’t keep a proper hold on her. I announced it myself! Well, that’s usually a losing strategy, but today we won. Winning is all that matters.”

Kamifuku: (to Uehara) “What the hell are you doing?”

Also struggled a bit with this: “でもホントに4月のラスベガスで享楽共鳴に負けて、私はもう次オーバーイーツで対戦になった時には絶対に勝って、ベルトを狙うというのをずっと虎視眈々と狙っていたので、きょうはカード決まった瞬間から、もう絶対に勝ちにいこうというのは決めてて。というのも私、すごい上福さんに助けられて、なんかホントに一回プロレス向いてないんじゃないかとか、東京女子にとって自分の存在意義ってなんだろうってすごい悩んだ時期があって。その時にすごい夜な夜な相談乗ってくださって.”

Uehara: “Well, after losing to Kyoraku Kyomei in Las Vegas back in April, I’ve been watching them like a hawk, planning to beat them the next time we faced them as Ober Eats and then aim for their belts. So the moment today’s match was set, I was absolutely determined to win. Because Kamifuku-san, you really helped me, and there was a time where I really struggled, wondering if pro wrestling was a good fit for me, and questioning my purpose in TJPW. During that time, you’d listen to me and give me advice night after night. And I haven’t been able to pay you back for that at all…”

Kamifuku: “No, no.”

Uehara: “And I really like our tag team, and I think we’re the strongest team, so I want to team up and fight for the belts again together.”

Kamifuku: “I get a bit shy, so I get like that, but I don’t really have much to do with my juniors. But even so, when Wakana first came to TJPW, we really talked about everything… I said some harsh things, too, and I’ve made her cry more times than I can count with how strict I was. But for me, having a senpai like that, it’s totally wrong. Being a veteran—a senpai is someone who properly scolds you and also gives you advice, and shows you just how damn cool they are. TJPW’s senpais are like that, too. So I don’t want to only be scolding Wakana. I have to show her my cool side, too, and become a proper senpai myself. I have to strengthen my resolve. So if we win the tag belts, take us out to dinner.”

Aja: “What!? Then if the two of you win the belts, me (and Ashida) are going to challenge you.”

Ashida: “Hooray!”

Aja: "Yay!” (everyone leaves)

Kyoraku Kyomei’s comments:

Misao: “I ended up getting pinned by Ober Eats and it’s super frustrating. I really can’t let it end like this. So on a grand stage, I really want to show everyone just who the strongest tag team is. We’re going to defend our belts on September 20.”

Nakajima: “We’ll pay them back a hundredfold!”

Honestly, I wasn’t super excited about this development… I’m not a big fan of rematches in general (I feel like they really need to justify themselves), and I was hoping to see Kyoraku Kyomei get a really outrageous title challenge like they talked about wanting… Maybe Ober Eats will surprise me lol and bring something really wacky to the match, but at the moment, it’s not especially exciting to me.

Then the main event was Miu vs Arisu for the TPC final! I really enjoyed this match! I was totally rooting for Arisu, and she did amazing here (Miu did well, too). I ended up being kind of crushed to see Miu win… She’s a deserving wrestler to win this tournament, and I’m sure the match with Mizuki will be awesome, but it’s another rematch, and I’m at a point where I’d rather see Mizuki’s reign continue than see another Miu reign so soon…

Honestly, I’m kind of dreading Wrestle Princess a bit because of the PoP and tag title matches both being rematches, and I really like both of the current champs… I feel like either Miu or Ober Eats (or both) is probably going to win, because otherwise what’s the point of doing a rematch if nothing changes? And I’m not ready to see Mizuki or Kyoraku Kyomei lose just yet… :smiling_face_with_tear:. I dunno, maybe the press conference will change my mind on things once I get around to looking at that…

In any case, here’s the post-match:

Miu: "I won the tournament! For the first time since the tournament final three years ago, here in this very place… I was able to win! I’m so glad, from the bottom of my heart, that my opponent in the final was Arisu.”

This was a bit confusing: “有栖はいつだってキラキラしてて、ずっとずっと強くて、一緒にいっぱいきっと同じ気持ちになるタイミングも多い仲間なんじゃないかなって思う大切な人です.”

“Arisu is always sparkling, and she’s always, always strong, and she’s someone dear to me, a friend who I know I’ll share many moments with where we feel the same. Beating Arisu like this… this trophy was made the time I fought Yuka-san in the final.”

Also struggled a bit with this: “そこから決勝戦、「あの夏」ってワードがすごい普通にあの試合中は楽しかったのに、どこか悔しさみたいなトラウマみたいなものが残ってて.”

“From that point on, that tournament final, even though during the match I had fun as usual, the phrase ‘that summer’, that became something like a trauma, a regret that lingered for me. I thought that if I could just get my hands on this trophy, that would surely go away.”

Struggled to come up with the best way to translate “プリンセスの頂点” here: “本当の意味で強くなれるんじゃないかなって思っていたので、いまさらにプリンセスの頂点で強くなれました!”

“I thought I could become truly strong, and now here at the Princess summit, I’ve gotten even stronger! The fact that I’ve reached the Princess summit this summer, that means… there is one more thing that I want to do this summer. Mizuki-san, please come out."

Mizuki: (entering the ring with the belt) “Miu…”

Miu: “I’ll be the one to say it. Please let me challenge you for that belt.”

Mizuki: "I’ve realized once again that you’re an absurdly strong princess, both in ability and spirit. And I’ve realized once again what a monster you are.”

“But y’know, Miu, when I took this belt from you, I had things that I wanted to achieve with everyone, things that I wanted to do—things I wanted to achieve with you, too—and those things have become even more clear to me and more defined. I wanted to become a princess, but now I feel like it’s because I’m a princess that this belt is here with me now. That’s how much of a princess I am, to an almost incomprehensible degree."

Miu: "Yes. Mizuki-san is really, really strong and pretty, and I think she’s an amazing princess. But this summer, the number one princess is me.”

This was a bit tricky: “結局こうやってプリンセスとして返り咲いた私、きっとその私が持ってた時よりも高まってるベルトの価値、追い越せると思ってます.”

“After all, I’ve finally made my comeback as a princess, and even with the belt having a higher value than when I had it, I’m sure that I can surpass it."

Mizuki: “Understood. To determine which of us is the princess most befitting of this belt, on September 20 at Ota City General Gymnasium, let’s fight with it on the line.”

They each strike princess-esque poses, then shake hands, and Mizuki exits.

Miu: "All of you at Korakuen Hall, I’m a princess right?”

“This princess is going to fight hard at Ota City General Gymnasium in order to reclaim that belt once again, so everyone… please come to Ota City General Gymnasium, riding a white horse! I’m counting on you!"

Princess Miu closed the show with: “Do you like TJPW?” “I love it!”

でプリンセス未詩が大会を締めた” for the last line, so I generously kept in the “プリンセス未詩” part. Miu better thank me.)

Miu’s comments:

Miu: "I won the tournament!”

“Ever since that unforgettable summer, I’ve always felt like I had to get my hands on this (trophy) somewhere, someday, or I wouldn’t be able to resolve things within my own mind. Every time summer rolled around, I’ve fought while bearing that memory. And finally, this year, I managed to win.”

This gave me some trouble: “これで自分のなかで、自分だけの気持ちなんですけど、感じてるだけなんですけど…でもすごくそれが大きな一歩としてこっからこれと歩む日々はすごく見える世界が変わっていくと思うし.”

“For me personally, it’s just my own internal feeling, but… I think it’s a huge step forward, and from here on, the days I pass with this will really change the world that I see around me. And since I declared my challenge today, I’m going to do my best to become an even stronger princess."

(Most of the cheers were for Endo)

"Yes. Hearing people cheering for you really does give you a lot of strength, right? Honestly, when I hear them and can clearly tell they’re not supporting me, it feels like my strength just doesn’t come.”

This was a bit tricky (it took me a bit to wrap my brain around what “私の声” presumably meant…): “でも『有栖!』『遠藤!』って聞こえる分、私の声も…比べてしまったらあれはあるかもしれないけど、でも十分に聞こえてきてくれたし。私は決勝戦の場に立って、東京女子は全員が応援される場でありたいっていう風に思っているので。それもひとつ自分が描いている決勝戦だったので、理想の闘い方ができたかなと思います.”

“But as much as I heard ‘Arisu!’ and ‘Endo!’, the voices for me, too… well, maybe there wasn’t much in comparison, but I still heard them loud and clear. I stood in the tournament final, and I want TJPW to be a place where everyone gets cheered. That was also part of the final I envisioned for myself, so I think I was able to fight how I had imagined."

(Did your spirit break?)

“Did it look like it broke?”

(No, it didn’t)

“Hahaha.” (laughs)

(Three years ago, Sakazaki said, ‘I wanted people to cheer for me, too.’)

"Yes, she did.”

“Well, those words still kind of weigh on me. Back then, when I fought Yuka-san, I definitely heard my name being cheered and I felt like they were really rooting for me. But then I found out from the sidelines that Yuka-san had been feeling that way during the match. That was really a huge shock. Realizing that she felt that way, and at the same time, realizing that my fighting style, or how I expressed my determination or something—not that it hurt her, but that it might’ve made her feel that she wanted support, too… that was really regrettable. I’ve really been thinking about this for months, years, even, so stating it so clearly… I’ve been avoiding it because I regretted it so much! Harsh!" (laughs) “So that’s why my ideal final was one where you could hear people cheering both for Arisu and for Miu. The fact that we were able to achieve that, I think it’s something meaningful. Maybe I was finally able to overcome the part I couldn’t get past before. Right?”

(Yes)

“That’s right!”

(With your tournament victory, you’ve achieved the true Grand Slam)

"Awesome! I’ve won the PoP, the International, Tag, all kinds of titles, but etching my name in history… like being the first to do something, leaving that kind of legacy, that’s something I’d never done before.”

This was a bit tricky: “してみたいけど何が残ってるんだろうって思ってたところで、こんな新しいグランドスラムなんて初めて聞いたので、めちゃくちゃ嬉しいです.”

“I’d wanted to, but right when I was wondering what I could leave behind, I heard about this new Grand Slam for the first time. So I’m super happy. Now I can be listed in Wikipedia!"

(There’s also the “who is the princess?” dispute)

"For a long time now, I’ve felt that Mizuki-san is ridiculously princess-like.”

“There was a part of me that was bitter about how much of a princess she was on January 4 this year, too. No but I’m a princess, right? Aren’t I? You’re all nodding along like crazy. Since I’m a princess, I bet you’re all agonizing over the question of which of us is the real princess. So you absolutely have to come see for yourselves at Ota City General Gymnasium!"

I thought Miu’s comments about Yuka wanting to be cheered (against Miu) were really interesting, honestly. For Miu, this was her three years overdue big tournament win that she justly deserved. But sometimes you become the villain in someone else’s story without realizing it… Miu might’ve been the underdog against Yuka, but she was the dominant former champ against Arisu, and when she finally did get that coveted trophy, the crowd wasn’t on her side anymore the same way they were when she first missed her chance… That’s gotta sting!

Arisu’s comments:

Endo: (lying down against the bench) “Ah… it’s over. The summer of Arisu Endo… it ended here in the final in the Korakuen main event. I got stronger, right? Didn’t I? I got stronger. So next year I am absolutely, absolutely going to win. Next year I am winning for sure! Everyone who cheered me on, my family, Dad, thank you. It ended here this year, but there’s always next year. Please watch me again next year. Thank you very much.”

(What kind of summer was it this year?)

“The absolute best summer! A hotter summer than ever. I’ve come to love summer.”

This was a bit tricky to put into English: “(有栖コール一色でした)もう力になりすぎる.”

(The crowd was unified in chanting for you)

“The support meant everything. Truly. I believe that’s what allowed me to make it this far. I was able to come this far because everyone encouraged me. And I also made it here thanks to my own abilities, too.”

Mizuki’s comments:

Mizuki: "So it’s been decided that Miu will be my next opponent at Ota City. I kind of had the feeling she’d come to take back the title of ‘princess’. But watching her win the tournament today, I really felt how strong she is, not just in ability, but in spirit, too.”

The ellipsis threw me off a bit with how to translate this: “でも、やっぱりバケモノ…プリンセスなことは認めますよ.”

“But, well, I’ll admit that she’s a monster… princess. It made me think once again that she really is a monster-like princess. That’s a huge compliment, though. But I took the belt from Miu and declared that I’m a princess.”

“Now I feel like this belt belongs here with me because I’m already a princess. Looking ahead, I have definite goals I want to accomplish, things that I want to do with everyone at TJPW and everyone supporting me… of course, I also have things that I want to accomplish with Miu. That’s why I can’t lose… No, I don’t want to lose. I don’t want to lose to Miu. So this summer, I’m going to fight the big monster princess with this belt on the line. I’m going to do my best."

This was tricky (I couldn’t even figure out what Miu was saying at the start…): “(立場が変わっての再戦はあまりなかったです)うわぁ、来たかーって。あの時の苦しさとか、すごい体に染みついてるというか記憶にも残ってるから.”

(There haven’t been many rematches where the challenger and champion have swapped positions)

“うわぁ、来たかーって. The pain from that time really left an impact on me, or rather it’s still fresh in my memory. I can tell that it’s absolutely going to be painful. Both Miu and I are stronger than we were then. I want to have a match that’s becoming of the Princess of Princess.”

This was a bit of a struggle (some of it was trying to put it into English…): “(バケモノプリンセスを倒すにはそれ以上の力を出さないといけないです)それ以上の力を出さなきゃいけないってこと。もちろん、私もその力を出さなきゃいけないなっていうのはもちろんなんですけど、私も未詩から取って積み上げてきた自信だったりとか悔しさももちろんいっぱいあるし。自分にできないこと、できること.”

(To defeat the monster princess, you need to bring out even more power)

“That means I have to summon even more strength. Of course, I also have to bring out that power, but I have all the confidence I’ve built up after winning this from Miu, and I also have a lot of frustration, too. Things I can’t do, and things I can do. I’ve defended the belt while feeling all kinds of emotions, and there are feelings I have from spending time as the champion… Well, I just don’t want to lose there.”

And that’s it for that one.

I’m going to try really hard to finish the next three shows and the presser before Wrestle Princess. I don’t think I’ll be able to get to Arisu’s homecoming show, but maybe if it’s really short… I dunno.

The next three are shorter, so hopefully it goes alright.

Finished the translation for the August 30 VOD show, too.

The first match with comments was a preview match with Ober Eats vs Shoko and Uta. I don’t remember this one at all, but Wakana won with a new move.

Ober Eats’ comments:

This was a bit tricky: “今日なんか、すげえ最後…わかながよう分からん動きして勝ちましたけど、前哨戦.”

Kamifuku: “Today, what an ending… Wakana pulled a move I don’t even know and got the win, in this preview match.”

Uehara: “Yeah, since it was the first match since our title challenge was set, I felt like we absolutely had to win and I was really fired up.”

This was a bit tricky:

上福「貪欲にね、生きてるからね。ホント貪欲だよね。京都の町だよ、ここは。したたかに」

Kamifuku: “Greedy, huh? That’s how you live. You’re really greedy. This is the town of Kyoto, you know. You sure had your fill.”

Uehara: “I was lively but restrained…”

This was also a bit tricky: “はんなりやらなきゃいけないのに、ホントにそういうことやっちゃうんですけども.”

Kamifuku: “You were supposed to be elegant, but then you go and do stuff like that. Well, it worked out. Have you decided on a name for it yet?”

Uehara: “Um, I’m thinking hard about it right now. Maybe I’ll announce it later.”

Kamifuku: “Well, expectations are high. If it bombs, I’ll let you know.”

Uehara: “Not a chance!” (laughs)

I wasn’t sure what she was talking about here: “それも含めて楽しんでもらえたらなと思いますけど.”

Kamifuku: “I hope you can enjoy that part, too. Nakasho (Nakajima) is also really fired up.”

Uehara: “Yeah.”

This was a bit tricky for the usual Kamiyu reasons…

Kamifuku: “It’s a bit awkward for me, though. She looks at me with a gaze like a teacher’s, so I usually chicken out. Just seeing her face makes me lose my nerve.”

Uehara: (laughs)

Kamifuku: “But at times like that, I look at Taomi… I call Misao-san ‘Taomi’—and seeing Taomi’s face calms me down. That’s just how life is.”

(In the preview match, there was one wrestler that didn’t fit with the rest…)

“The brat? For sure.” (to Uehara) “Are you and that kid close?”

Uehara: “Ah, yes. We’re around the same generation. She was amazing today, huh?”

This was a bit tricky…

Kamifuku: “Amazing, that brat’s attitude. But after all, in the Reiwa era… is that kid Gen Z? How old is she? Still 15 or 16? She seems young, but if you’re a brat, you gotta give an attitude and assert yourself the way that brats do. The ones I hate the most are the ones who don’t say a peep. I hate those shitty brats who can’t even say a proper greeting. So speak loudly and clearly. Yamashita-san said it too, right? Like, in the ring we’re equals. Since our Leader said it, I felt like I didn’t dislike that kind of brat. It’s like, come greet me properly with that size of yours.”

Uehara: “But when they were born sometime during Heisei, we don’t say ‘Reiwa!’?”

Kamifuku: “That girl was born in Reiwa? That can’t be. That’d make her the same age as an iPhone. Goodbye.”

Shoko and Uta’s comments:

Nakajima: “You, were you born in the Reiwa era?”

Uta: “Heisei 17 or 19 or 20 or something…”

Nakajima: “Yeah, that sounds right.”

Uta: “Maybe 7?”

This was a bit tricky (the whole era thing is honestly a bit confusing in general…): “まだ赤ちゃんじゃないよな.”

Nakajima: “You were still a baby, weren’t you?”

Uta: “Reiwa.” (laughs)

Nakajima: “This girl was born in Heisei, so you best not underestimate her. Got it?! Today was a preview match. We lost, but I’m going to cheer myself up by turning this girl into the ultimate weapon, so keep your expectations high.”

Uta: “I’ll do my best!”

(Ultimate weapon?)

Nakajima: “An ultimate weapon, for TJPW. I don’t know.” (laughs)

Uta: “I’ll do my best!”

Then the semi-main was Arai and Mifu in a sort of homecoming match vs Miyu and Kaya. It didn’t work out so well for the Kyoto natives, though.

Mifu and Arai’s comments:

Ashida: “I lost… It’s frustrating.”

Arai: “Last year, we didn’t hold a show in Kyoto, so this was the first one in two years. And since the last one was held two years ago, we’ve added a new member who’s a Kyoto native, Ashida-san, and we got to fight together today. Was this our second time (teaming up)?”

Ashida: “Yes, that’s right.”

Arai: “It was our second time tagging, but even though it was kind of a homecoming show for us, we weren’t able to get the win…”

Ashida: “Ugh, yeah. I feel like it’s because (I) wasn’t strong enough…”

Arai: “No, that’s not it. It was because I wasn’t able to save you. It might’ve been a bit because of a lack of strength, but the next time we come back home, let’s team up again.”

Ashida: “I really want to get stronger and then make my homecoming again.”

Arai: “Yes! Let’s do that. We’ll come back again!”

Then the main event was Mizuki, Haru, and Toga vs Miu, Himawari, and Shino. I also don’t really remember this one (except that there was kind of a charged moment on the apron with Mizuki and Miu taking each other’s hand…), but Mizuki got the win by pinning Shino.

Here’s the post-match:

Mizuki: “Ah, that was tough! Thank you all so much for coming today!” (to her teammates) “Just for a bit… please take this.”

Kazashiro: “This is my first time in Kyoto. I missed my match the year before last due to poor health, and I’ve never come on a school trip, either. So this was my very first time in Kyoto, and I’m so happy that I finally got to come!”

Toga: “Actually, this was also my first time doing a match in Kyoto. I also took the same day off (as Kazashiro).” (laughs) “But I’ve been to this venue before to watch matches, and I’ve always wanted to fight here someday. I’m so glad I got to do that today, and winning here makes me so incredibly happy!”

Mizuki: “I didn’t win just by myself today, so I really have to thank you two. Ota City is set, but we have all of these people who come to watch us do matches in all of these different places, and people who always follow us. And that’s how we’re able to do so many matches, and I’m once again so incredibly grateful for that. And so… TJPW is going to keep delivering pro wrestling that makes your heart flutter, and which makes you look forward to tomorrow, so please stick with us forever and ever! Please keep your expectations high for the future of TJPW. Thank you again for today!”

Mizuki/Haru/Toga’s comments:

Mizuki: “How was your first time wrestling in Kyoto?”

Toga: “The stained glass was so beautiful, I kept being like, ‘Wow, amazing!’… But I had to focus on the match, so I couldn’t afford to get distracted.” (laughs) “But the sight of the stained glass after our victory was absolutely gorgeous.”

Kazashiro: “Today, Mizuki-san was really princess-like. Somehow… it really made me feel anew, ‘Oh, she truly is a princess.’”

Mizuki: “That makes me happy.”

Toga: “You shone so brightly.”

Mizuki: “But honestly, today, I really saw Miu’s princess-like qualities all over again… Well, whether you see her as a monster or not is up to you.”

Both: “No, no…” (laughs)

Mizuki: "She’s riding that momentum even harder after winning the princess tournament. Her skill was already there, but seeing her with so much momentum, too… that was pretty tough. But you all held her back at the end and gave me the assist. Getting this win today really meant a lot to me, so I’m really grateful.”

This sentence was also a bit tricky: “こうやって京都に来れたり、色んなところに行けるのもみんなで頑張ってるからやし、来てくれるお客さんのおかげでもあるから、もっともっと一緒に頑張って私は行きたいんですけど…どうですか?”

“Getting to come to Kyoto like this, we’re able to go to all of these different places because we’re all working hard together, and it’s also thanks to the fans who come to see us. So I want to keep pushing forward and working even harder together… How about you?"

Toga: "Yes, I want to keep working hard together.’

Kazashiro: “We’ll do our best!”

Mizuki: (laughs) “Thank you very much!”

Miu/Shino/Himawari’s comments:

Miu: "This was my first preview match after the tournament.”

Struggled a bit with translating both halves of this sentence: “結果としては巻けてしまったんですけど、でも私のこの夏イチのプリンセスな姿は見せれたかなと思っています.” Then I realized that “wound up” is also a phrase that exists in English, which is strangely similar to 巻けてしまった…

“I wound up losing, but I think I showed my top form princess self this summer. What do you think?"

Shino: “I’m sorry to be adjacent to such a princess.”

Miu: “No, that’s not it. I think that every girl is a princess.”

HIMAWARI: “Oh!”

Miu: “Every girl is a princess!”

Shino: “So then… you’re saying that you’re more of a princess than the rest…?”

Miu: “Exactly. Among them, I am number one, the number one princess this summer. Don’t you agree?”

Shino: “Yes.”

Miu: “Right?”

HIMAWARI: “Yes!”

This was confusing, but googling “ンツェル” I think solved the “HIMAンツェル” puzzle for me, which helped a bit with figuring out what on earth she might be going for with “志乃ノラヒメ”, though I couldn’t exactly pin down a princess whose name ended with a “nora”… My best guess was maybe Princess Aurora? But I dunno… “素敵よ、HIMAンツェルも素敵だし、志乃ノラヒメも素敵です.”

Miu: “It’s wonderful. HIMApunzel is wonderful, and Princess Shinorora is also wonderful. I’m going to keep riding this momentum and work hard to be the number one princess.”

(How was it facing the champion, Mizuki?)

This was a bit tricky: “やっぱり1月4日にシングルした時よりも、このベルトで引っ張ってきているっていうのを感じますし.”

“Honestly, compared to our singles match on January 4, I really felt the weight of the belt. Even from just the slightest contact, I could feel how strong she was. Just meeting her eyes, you can feel Mizuki-san’s true strength intensely, so I resolved to fight even harder so that I wouldn’t lose.”

(At the end, she pinned your teammate right in front of you)

“It’s humiliating. Huh, what do you think? Am I really a princess in Weekly Pro-Wrestling’s eyes?”

(…Yes)

“Thank you very much. Then it’s indeed the case.”

That’s it for that one. Next up is Go Girl 6, which is even shorter, and then one more show, which is a little shorter than this one. Then the presser… If all goes as planned, I’ll have that done by Wednesday night/Thursday morning.

I would say that she says 勝ち取る but in a not very well enunciated way where the transcriber can be forgiven for going more with what it sounded like than what actually makes sense in the sentence.

She’s castigating both of her teammates for not backing her up, so the “Back us up” should be “back me up.”
It’s not really necessary to walkthrough the spot to explain that, but it is fun so hey - she’s specifically mad about this part:
She has everyone else in the match, including her teammates, bunched in a corner:

But everyone dodges out of the way of her attack.

That’s the 何逃げたりしてるんだよ she asks about in the backstage promo - She’s mad that her teammates didn’t help her follow through on her strategic choice (of endangering them) somehow and instead acted like potential victims and escaped. So come to think of the translation for that part could probably be made more literal, like “why were you running out of the way?” or something.

Anyway, she gets angry enough about that in the match to try to strangle (again) the two kids, but they dodge

and so in the end her teammates get strangled (due to their poor teamwork!)

(If it’s any consolation I would have watched this match this morning after belatedly finally getting around to finish the show before helping with these, and I still had to scrub back through to figure out what was the notable spot  )

Good thing I walked through the spot after all, since of course they’re talking about it here.

I was confused about Uta’s part here, but I think I found where she’s talking about that people got mad at her afterward - the camera angle happens to not show it well, but here Osano is commentating “怒ってます、怒ってますよ” calling attention to something as Suzume and Konatsu (and Shino) are looking into the ring where Uta is, so I think that’s mainly who Uta was referring to with みんさん in this case (as well as presumably Rika).

In the video, she doesn’t enunciate it very well, but I would say at least certainly as written in the transcript, the あなたのせいだよ!is then her response to those who got mad at her.
Like “Everyone got mad at me (for dodging out of the way of Rika’s strangling maneuver and throwing Suzume and Konatsu into it so they got strangled instead), but it’s their own fault! (for not dodging out of the way themselves)”
(rather than something she’s saying to Yuki directly in the present).

Yes, すけ (e.g. 助) and のすけ (e.g. 之助) (among other kanji variants of course) are masculine name suffixes.
That’s one of those things I felt confident enough in to just say without finding a source but figured it’s good to do anyway, and I at least found this name website article with a widget at the bottom for searching kanji in names, and 100% of at least 500 names ending in 助 in their database are male, it seems.

In this case, シャチ means orca. So シャチノスケ is a generic cute male name for an orca.
I remember distinctly the commentators calling it an イルカ so you’re in good company on that point, but you know, looking at it again, perhaps she’s right to call it シャチノスケ and not say, イルカタロウ!

Incidentally, a tangential note and I don’t have a source for this part but just for additional flavor I feel like すけ as in 輔 feels relatively modern, すけ as in 助 feels slightly old-fashioned, and のすけ as in 之助 or 乃助 feels quite a bit old-fashioned, or otherwise flowery. But that’s just the vague impression I get, and obviously that’s working off of primarily famous people (and mainly wrestlers at that) and media and history moreso than actually meeting any everyday people (edit: and also I forgot about Takeshita when I wrote that). I’m probably mostly getting that impression based on what names I would expect an Edo-period samurai or a Showa-era prime minister to have.

It’s funny how instincts like gender of generic names develop over time… I remember when you mentioned a breakthrough you had along those lines in your study log and I had to refrain from commenting “yes, you’re right - but of course 子 is a feminine suffix and 彦 is a masculine suffix, they don’t sound anything alike!” even though I can very much relate to it being confusing.

The spot where Itoh blocked a Finally with her head was a fun very pro wrestling kind of spot. (I was surprised that it maybe killed the Finally a little but then you know, the rest of the match happened…)

Odd little transcription ミス here - she says 比べられたり - like, at first it was tough being compared to Itoh.

Seems good to me!
The only change I’d possibly suggest is I’d maybe add “between us” to make “the different atmosphere between us” - purely for clarity in English and not for anything to do with Japanese.

Seems good to me again!

This is condensed quite a bit in the transcript and a little less Kamiyu-y.
In the video she says to Uehara roughly 「ちょっと待って、普通に、何急に喋ってんの、お前、本当」basically telling her “hang on a sec, come on, for real, what are you saying?”
Then she stops talking to Uehara and starts talking about her. - but by the end of that she’s also partially talking to Uehara again at the end. Like she wants to impress it both to the audience and to Wakana. Like roughly “You know, this girl’s impudence, or like her brazenness - it’s great, I do like it about her, but it really is impudent (so cut it out - as I meaningfully make eye contact with you, Wakana).”
先輩やし then is a tacked on reason: “They’re your senpais, for one”
And then the senpais get up and move toward her, so she says to them あ、すいませんホント, like “ah, I’m really sorry (for my tag partner’s rudeness).”

… Which is all to say it’s totally up to you how (if at all) to handle that complicated back and forth of directions in her speech - she’s simultaneously telling off Wakana, making excuses for her to the audience, and apologizing for her to Kyoraku Kyomei.

As it is now is probably perfectly fine! But I would personally probably tweak at least the “I like it” to “I like that about you/her” - just because she (in this moment) definitely doesn’t like that Wakana made the challenge since she’s trying to make excuses for it and back out of it, but she does like that about Wakana more generally (in a way that’s significantly clearer in the video than the transcript).

Wait wait wait wait wait! Booo on the transcriber’s part! Booo! This leaves out a really critical bit of Kamiyu character work!
When I watched it earlier this morning I thought I would have to analyze it for this translation help but I wasn’t expecting that it would be completely excised…

So - here Kamiyu addresses Kyoraku Kyomei and she says something like roughly (this is one case where it would be easier for me to just translate directly without transcribing into Japanese, so take that part with a grain of salt):
「先輩やし (indicating herself I think? - suggesting that earlier the use of this phrase was trying to lead into this part before she interrupted herself, rather than how I interpreted it before)、こうって言うんだよ、普通に先輩、見とけよ」
As in, “This is how your senpai would say it, so watch me”
She’s going to show Wakana how to ask for a title challenge while not being rude and impudent about it, drawing some おぉs of anticipation from the crowd.

(I had to check her twitter to confirm what she calls Misao…)
This makes the whole crowd and commentary team laugh as the commentator comments 「もっと失礼」(conveniently explaining the joke).
I remember ワンチャン really well because we were confused by it before in this thread with Kamiyu and then I mis-remembered it as an example of stuff I learned from helping with these translations talking to my italki teacher who knows wrestling, and so that mistake solidified it forever in my head (correctly) as basically a slangy version of もしかしたら. (just in case you needed a refresher on the point also)
And so this is like very roughly - “so, Naka-Sho and Taomi - think you can go?”
With the joke being that she was building it up like she was going to actually model a more respectful way to ask for a title shot from senpais, but instead she asked it in a distinctly Kamiyu and far more casual and rude way.

She also follows this up with a very very very very contracted (which is inherently rude) version of like
“and if it works for you, how about at Ota City, please please please”
(not going to even try to transcribe the contracted Japanese)
So again the joke is the mix of her ostensible deference to her senpais and criticism at the brazen impudence of her own kohai, while being incredibly brazenly impudent herself.

I feel confidently enough in my interpretation of this whole part that I strongly think you should include it even though it’s not in the transcript, personally. It’s like, the whole key to this entire bit! And I think if so we both earn the prestigious feather in our cap of handling the inherent difficulty of Kamiyu’s entire deal better than a native-speaking professional transcriber! I’m certainly feeling a bit smug about it!

With this context, that’s why Misao begins with “The two of you combined are 200% shameless!” - Kamiyu heavily amplified Wakana’s rudeness, she didn’t just apologize for it. Misao is 100% justified in her reaction, where without that crucial section she wouldn’t be.

I have at least played pachinko in Like a Dragon games!! And I always want vaguely to understand it out of wishing it were more like pinball because I like pinball and wish that Japan had more pinball, if nothing else.
… but alas despite that, pachinko is nearly incomprehensible to me, and it’s also 100% definitely just the same thing as slots, and therefore sucks really bad.
The solution you found gets my stamp of approval for what it’s worth!
My very very vague understanding of panchinko from simulations is that you get a steady stream of tiny balls and you control the arc they enter the playfield (but of course it’s completely random from there), and you want the little balls to go into particular bits of the board to trigger… stuff, and so it completely aligns with my understanding that some of that stuff would be additional balls, and that might in some way be comparable to the situation Kamiyu is describing…

Yes, it’s a can spot - as you might glean from the gestures in the video, Mifu got dinked with the can during the match.

I would proooooobably say that the “自分で呼んだんだから!” part would be more like “you called for it yourself” - since she certainly set up Aja for the attack (although I don’t hear actual vocal calling)
She says a little in the video I don’t make out but the gist I get is that Aja is surely exceedingly well-used to tag partners making that particular screw up on Mifu’s part - but hey, a win is a win.

This part didn’t come out quite right, and it’s thanks to video-only gestures.

She gestures to Aja when she says こういう先輩 (and there’s a little more that emphasizies that contrast that didn’t make it in the transcript).

She’s saying like - she herself has great senpais like Aja, who she learns from in one kind of way, but her specific relationship with Wakana is different from those - she’s not like that more usual kind of senpai.

This next part then:
大先輩がいて、やっぱ先輩ってちゃんと叱ってくれるしアドバイスもくれるし。そのカッコいい背中を見せつけられるんです。東京女子の先輩たちもそうなんですけど。
is talking about that more conventional kind of senpai - and specifically Aja. Aja scolds her and gives her advice, but she also shows a really cool example, and there’s TJPW senpai who are like that to her also.
And I think her point is that although she has talked a lot with Wakana and so has been a senpai in that way, she hasn’t felt that she’s shown that cool example pushing her forward just from that, and so their relationship is motivating to her to actually try, because she wants to be a successful example to Wakana and not just someone who scolds her.

Minor video-based note, but she’s telling the folks at home that everyone behind the camera is nodding.

So it should probably technically be “Everyone’s” rather than “You’re all”

Taking that one Yuka comment so to heart and therefore wishing so much for a tournament win where both are cheered is so sweet. :sob:

I would probably say here it can be treated the same as a period. What’s happening in the video is プリンセスなことは認めますよ is a reaction to the reporters’ reaction to the バケモノ comment. I would say the ellipsis either marks the end of what she was going to say initially, or at least the end in practice, as the monster-like princess picks up both where both ends left off, squaring the initial statement with the softening interjection.
My take would be something like roughly “But well, she really is a monster - I DO recognize her princesshood, to be clear; I really felt all over again what a monster-like princess she is.”

It’s a little bit clearer in the video, but she’s describing the feeling of reacting to the development. I’d maybe go with something roughly like “It’s like, ‘boy, this is how it’s going down?’” (though I feel like that’s not great in a hard to describe kind of way).

unusual variant of odd transcription here - accidental insertion!
The part between the 私も’s is accidentally added in the transcript:
それ以上の力を出さなきゃいけないってことはもちろんなんですけど、私も未詩から取って積み上げてきた自信だったりとか悔しさももちろんいっぱいあるし。自分にできないこと、でもできること.
is a closer transcript.
Tweaks to smooth parts out based on that:
“That does mean I have to summon even more strength, of course. But I also have the confidence I’ve builty up after winning this from Miu, and I also have a lot of frustration too. There’s things I can’t do, and things I manage to do anyway.”

That’s all I have for the final! I’ll likely do the other show tomorrow if not this evening but that seemed like a good stopping place for the moment! Plenty in there that was tricky that it seemed to me you weathered just fine! A lot of translation for this show and it was definitely one where it felt like I was mainly commenting on transcription issues or chasing down references to specific parts of matches, which is really really cool when you get down to it!

I unfortunately don’t have an update on my part of the HYPE translation - I think I’m finding that my brain is so used to helping with these backstage promo translations at this point, that it’s having a hard time slotting in making additional time for something similar without just defaulting to the usual translation help process as new questions come in. I feel very positive that it’s just the kind of thing where sitting down to do it is the hard part and once I do I’ll make good progress though (and I’m definitely not saying to delay the main translations for my sake or anything like that, keep them coming as you like!), so I’ll try to be sure and set aside that time soon!
