Got about halfway through translating the TJPW ittenyon show. I needed a bit of a break from wrestling stuff after ittenyon week, so I was a little slow to get started on the translation, especially after I noticed the shows this weekend were VOD shows, which gave me a little more time to work on this one.
Loved this show overall, though! It’s hands down the most consistent ittenyon week show, in my experience.
First up this year, we had Chika and Toga vs Himawari and the debuting Mifu Ashida, who I had never seen wrestle before. She came from Ice Ribbon, which has, uh, lately been in pretty rough shape (I don’t know if you’ve been following any of the news, rodan, but the future of the company looks extremely uncertain right now, and there were all sorts of issues, like the wrestlers not getting paid, which led to a bunch of departures).
In any case, Mifu is in TJPW now! I thought her wrestling style seemed pretty fun and different compared to the existing rookies, so it’ll be neat to see how she develops from here.
Chika/Toga’s comments:
Toga: “It’s Ittenyon, the first show of the new year, and I won! I’m glad we were able to win without issue.”
“Ashida-san joined the company, and this match was set, and when I heard that she had debuted in 2023… It was like ‘nice to meet you’, but I had never seen any of her matches, though we had debuted the same year, so I viewed her as a rival. When I was taking her attacks during the match, her gaze was piercing, and it felt like she really didn’t want to lose. But it was my victory today, and I know that she’s frustrated, but I want to face Ashida-san in a singles match next time. I hope we’ll be able to do a singles match someday.”
Nanase: “This was my first Ittenyon, and my match got changed, but… Toga-san won for us. I’m happy to be able to kick off the year with a win, but I hope I can win the next one by my own power and gain even more momentum.”
Toga: “I will do my best in 2025!”
Nanase: “We’ll do our best!”
Himawari/Mifu’s comments:
Ashida: “So frustrating!”
This was a bit tricky to put into English: “せっかくならね、デビュー戦で…”
HIMAWARI: “Even though you’ve come all this way, and it was your TJPW debut…”
Ashida: “I wanted to win! Damn it!”
This was tricky: “23年デビューで、ここにきたのも何かの縁だからね.”
HIMAWARI: "We debuted in 2023, and a chance encounter brought us here. But from here on out, let’s pummel them even more!”
Ashida: “This was my first match in TJPW. To be honest, I really wanted to win, but I think I was at least able to make my presence known…”
HIMAWARI: “She’s truly amazing.”
“She has a flexible body that’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before, and there’s so much she can do. So I think she’ll be an immediate asset. We teamed up today, but we’re totally hardcore rivals. I already view her as a rival.”
Ashida: “I see myself becoming a top wrestler in a year.”
HIMAWARI: “Isn’t that a bit soon? Incredible.”
Ashida: “I will overtake you!”
HIMAWARI: “I’m going to run so that you won’t pass me.” (laughs) “Well, that was fun.”
Ashida: “Yes, it was! Being in Korakuen with such a packed crowd… It felt great!”
HIMAWARI: “I’m glad; you had a great debut.”
Ashida: “I hope I can get a win soon.”
HIMAWARI: “Let’s go get a win. So, please continue to support us!”
Ashida: “I’m looking forward to it!”
(How was it being at TJPW for the first time?)
This was a bit tricky to translate: “お客さんがすごいあったかいなって思いました。すごいあったかい雰囲気のなか、実はちょっと緊張してたんですけど、会場入った瞬間にあったかい雰囲気がしたので。あ、すごい、いい空間だなって思って.”
“I thought the audience was very encouraging. It was such an incredibly warm atmosphere, I was actually a bit nervous, but the moment I entered, there was that warmth. I thought, ‘Wow, this is an amazing, nice place.’ I felt that I was able to be at ease and have an enjoyable match. I was glad all over again that I could step into that ring and be a part of this.”
(What is your goal while you are here in TJPW?)
“To become a top wrestler within a year.”
Struggled quite a bit with Himawari’s ゴリゴリ here (as well as earlier): “いいねぇ。ここまでゴリゴリの人は初めてだから.”
HIMAWARI: “That’s great. I’ve never seen someone who is such a go-getter.”
Ashida: “I want to do a title match as soon as possible.” (laughs)
HIMAWARI: “Then maybe we can be a tag team…”
This was a bit tough: “髪の毛大丈夫かな? 1人でも2人でもベルト3本とかいっぱい持ちたい.”
Ashida: “I wonder if my hair is okay? Whether it’s by myself or with a partner, I want to have a lot of belts, like three or something.”
HIMAWARI: “That’s nice; you have very high aspirations.”
Ashida: “I’m very greedy in 2025.”
HIMAWARI: “A good wind is blowing.”
Ashida: “But I do want to win the tag belts. It just so happens that this…” (she and HIMAWARI motion to their eye makeup)
HIMAWARI: “I’m glad that we have so much in common.”
Ashida: “Then, I’ll grow out my hair.”
HIMAWARI: “Hurry and grow it out until it reaches your waist.” (laughs)
Ashida: “I’ll do my best.” (laughs)
After that was Ryo Mizunami, Yoppy, and Kaya vs the all non-Japanese team of Kira, Matcha, and Ivy.
I don’t remember a whole lot from this match, though Matcha continues to impress me, and I thought Ivy getting wrecked by a veteran like Aniki is probably exactly what she needs at this point in her career, haha.
Aniki & co.'s comments:
Mizunami: “Happy New Year, 2025! I’m so happy that I was able to participate in TJPW this year, too, and getting to do it today at Korakuen, with a packed house, the very first show of the year, I’m so, so happy, and it gave me that ‘let’s go!’ feeling all over again.”
I wasn’t sure if there was a better way to translate “やってやるぞ!” besides “let’s go!”, but I couldn’t really come up with one…
Hasegawa: “I’m really happy to have won in my first match of 2025. I want to keep this going and keep on winning. Please continue to support me in 2025.”
Toribami: “I won in the first show of the year, so I hope that I’ll continue to get stronger and move up to a higher level!”
Mizunami: “2025, let’s go!”
The team of English-speakers did their comments all in English:
(Unfortunately, you couldn’t start 2025 with a win, but how was the match, teaming with each other?)
Kira: “I mean, it’s good. Starting with a win doesn’t matter, as long as we can work our way up through the year. It’s something to work towards, right?”
Matcha: “As for us, I wasn’t the worst, but I think this was good?”
Kira: “Yeah, we made a pretty good team, actually.”
Matcha: “We lost, but I think we did good.”
Ivy: “A bit of pain, but I like pain. I felt really cool, and even if I lost, I’m very, very happy with my performance.”
I had a bit of trouble hearing Matcha’s first answer (and everyone’s answers, really) over the background noise here…
After that was Mahiro vs Aja Kong, Neko, Yuki Aino, Raku, and Pom Mahiro, Aja, and Neko vs Aino, Raku, and Pom. Also, Bryce Remsburg from AEW was here as the referee for some reason?? I burst out laughing when I realized the nonsense he was about to have to deal with during this match. He really had his work cut out for him here, huh?
I thought this match was funny because before it happened, Pom posted this joke revised card that had all of them on one team against Mahiro, and then sure enough, it ended up playing out exactly like that at the start of the match, because Aja defected to be with Raku, and Neko defected to be with Aino, and they were more than happy to attack Mahiro.
In any case, there were some great Raku and Aja exchanges in this, and ultimately the 三角関係 got the win.
Mahiro/Aja/Neko’s comments:
Aja: “This one is all Mahiro’s fault!”
Mahiro: “Huh, why?”
This whole chunk was a bit tricky:
アジャ 最初に仲間外れのままなら猫ちゃんがこんな目に遭わなかったんだから。
Aja: “If we’d kept you out in the first place, Neko-chan wouldn’t have had to go through this.”
Mahiro: “Isn’t it bad to leave people out?”
Aja: “It’s more fun to leave you out.”
Mahiro: “Why…”
Aja: “You should’ve been alone.”
Mahiro: “It’s not good for me to be on my own. I might’ve gotten obliterated.”
Aja: “The apology you do during the match.” (to Neko) “It’s because she says stuff like that, eh?”
Mahiro: “Huh? …I did it because I thought it was important.”
Aja: “Why? On top of that, if we prostrate ourselves with a dogeza, that’s bad for our knees. Are you trying to mess up our knees?”
Mahiro: “I don’t do it with that in mind at all…”
Aja: “That’s the only thing you have in mind. Apologize, apologize.”
Mahiro: “The whole thing was my fault.”
Aja: “That’s right. Apologize! Apologize!”
Mahiro: (doing a dogeza) “I am so very sorry!”
Aja: “Alright, that’s enough. Neko-chan, let’s go! It’s Mahiro’s fault!” (she leaves with Neko)
Mahiro: “…Happy New Year, everyone.”
Yuki: “Alright! We started 2025 off with a win!”
Pom: “Yay!”
Raku: “The Love Triangle won.”
Had a bit of trouble translating the ブイブイ stuff and also wasn’t sure about the last line here:
ユキ 三角関係がブイブイ言わせていくので。
Yuki: “The Love Triangle is on the rise.”
Pom: “Going up!”
Yuki: “One might say that we’re the best 3-person tag team.”
Pom: “That’s right. We won today even though the other side had Aja-san!”
Yuki: “We’re the strongest, huh?”
Struggled a bit with this: “ぽむは思っていたのと違ったけど、お年玉がもらえたらかよしとする.”
Pom: “It was something different than I was expecting, but as long as I got a New Year’s gift, that’s what counts.”
Yuki: “Well, I’m sure Pom-chan will take a lot of punishment this year as well.”
Pom: “I’m waiting for my New Year’s gift!”
Yuki: “I was able to face my beloved Mahiro and Neko, so that’s a good sign for the year to come. How about you, Raku?”
Raku: “I wonder if I was able to make up with Aja-sama?”
Yuki: “Did you? Well, I think Aja-sama loves you the same as ever.”
Raku: “Yay! This year, let’s all fight holding lots of love in our hearts.”
Yuki: “Yes, let’s do it!”
After that was the people’s main event: the annual Misao vs Shoko match (I can’t believe I’ve been watching long enough to have seen six of these by now…). This year’s had a very DDT twist to it because they brought in Poison Sawada Julie, who, as it turned out, was here to get revenge on Misao after she eliminated him in the princess rumble.
PSJ used his snake magic to corrupt Shoko as well as several other roster members, then attempted to turn TJPW into 蛇界女子プロレス, and it was up to Misao to beat Shoko if she wanted to bring her friend back and save her from being turned into a snake.
I thought this match was a blast as always! The snake stuff was a fun new twist, and it ended in a very heartwarming moment for Kyoraku Kyomei fans
. This is gonna be their year for sure
.
Misao and Shoko’s comments:
Misao: “Nakajima-san!”
Nakajima: “The poison has left my body!”
Misao: “Welcome back! How much do you remember?”
Nakajima: “I don’t remember anything! I remember nothing after the DEKAVITA C!”
Misao: “The match is already over! Something unthinkable happened!”
Nakajima: “Ittenyon! This year’s Ittenyon!”
Misao: “…It’s already over.”
Nakajima: (crying)
Misao: “But I think we were able to show Kyoraku Kyomei’s bond. I was able to hear Nakajima-san’s true feelings there at the end, and I don’t know if you remember it, but I feel the same way. This year, Kyoraku Kyomei is definitely going to win the tag belts!”
Nakajima: “I don’t really understand it, but I share that feeling!”
Misao: “Yes, because it’s what you said.”
(Nakajima vs Misao at Ittenyon 2026 was set right away)
This last chunk was a bit tricky:
中島 今、西暦何年ですか?
Nakajima: “Right now, what year is it on a western calendar?”
(It’s 2025.)
Nakajima: “That’s risky!”
Misao: “A whole year later!?”
Nakajima: “How many years was I asleep…”
Misao: “Well, the number of years was, how should I put it—you were asleep for about 30 minutes. Something wild happened this year, but I’m proud that this Kyoraku Kyomei showdown has become an annual event, so next year, preferably with all of our memories intact, let’s be reckless!”
PSJ’s comments:
I tried to give his comments a bit of flavor, but I dunno, maybe I went overboard trying to localize some of it…
PSJ: “TJPW is interesting. This year is the Year of the Snake, the year of the Jakai (Snake World). Nevertheless, I failed to transform Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling into Jakai Joshi Pro Wrestling… Damn it! That’s a shame, but I had a good time. I’ll come back to TJPW again, mark my words. Especially Hyper Misao, don’t forget, you wretch!”
I ended up translating 蛇界年 as “year of the Jakai (Snake World)” rather than giving it a translator’s note or translating it fully and leaving out the romanization because I felt that it was more seamless to do it that way (though I’m open for arguments for doing it another way).
Incidentally, I noticed that Dramatic DDT had it as “Hebikai”, which is I suppose the perils of working entirely from transcripts and not paying too much attention to kanji readings. When I saw that in his recap, I doubted it a bit, because my knee-jerk reaction would be to read 蛇界 with both on’yomi readings, and I had a vague memory of it being pronounced like that during the show, so I checked the comment footage, and yep, I was right.
After that match, Yuka teamed up with Moka against Shino and Arisu, which was a fun match, albeit a step down in excitement from the snake corruption arc we had just witnessed. It’s always fun to have Yuka back, though! Also, I was NOT expecting Moka to go blonde, considering how traditional Japanese beauty is such a big part of her gimmick. So that was a surprise!
Yuka and Moka’s comments:
Sakazaki: “Thank you! That was fun!”
Moka: “Thank you very much!”
Sakazaki: “Wait, wait, more importantly, what’s up with this?” (she motions to Moka’s hair color and new gear)
Moka: “I got new gear.”
Sakazaki: "It’s cute!”
This sent me down a google rabbit hole that didn’t really help me with the translation… “角(髪型)生えてます!”
(gesturing to Moka’s hairstyle) “You’re growing horns!"
Moka: “Yes, I’m growing horns.” (laughs)
Sakazaki: “Haru, who was to be my opponent this time, got swapped out for Shino, but was this our first encounter?”
This was a bit tricky: “映像で見てたんですけど、それよりはすっぽんのようにしつこいなって.”
“I’ve been watching her on video, but she had a turtle-like persistence. She had a lot of guts, and that’s what makes a good wrestler. And Arisu. Arisu is also a great thinker, and she’s gained a lot of strength, and she’s more composed than she was the last time we faced each other. I feel like she has become a dependable wrestler. But, she still has a long way to go.” (laughs)
This was a bit tricky to put into English: “私も止まってられないので。自分の思い通りにはならないけど、そこで腐らずに私は東京女子出身だというプライドを持って私のスタイルでこれからも世界で闘っていきたいと思います.”
“Because I won’t slow down, either. I can’t do everything that I want, but I won’t let that stop me, and I’m going to keep fighting all over the world with my own style, showing my TJPW origins with pride.” (to Moka) “I leave TJPW in your hands. Everyone is doing their best, so I can watch from afar with peace of mind. Thank you.”
Moka: “Thank you very much.”
This was a bit tricky: “有栖ちゃんはデビューも近くて絶対に負けられない相手だし、志乃ちゃんは負けん気が強いからすごいしぶとくて.”
“Arisu-chan’s debut was close to mine and she’s someone I absolutely can’t lose to, and Shino-chan has an unyielding spirit, so she’s tenacious. But it was a lot of fun teaming up with Yuka-san.”
Sakazaki: “Yes, it was!”
(Will you come back again if the timing works out?)
Just wanted to make sure I got this right: “ですね。でも限りなく予定は未定ですね。でも戻ってきたいなって。まあ試合がなくても見に来たいなと思うので.”
Sakazaki: “Yes! But my schedule is totally undecided. I want to come back, though. Well, even if I don’t have a match, I’d like to come see the show.”
Arisu and Shino’s comments:
Arisu: “She was super strong! I met up with Yuka-san for the first time in a long time, and we were able to fight, and not only that, it was my first match in the new year. I’m really glad that we could face each other. This was your first time (facing Sakazaki), right?”
Shino: “Yes, it was.”
“This match came together under various circumstances, and I felt that there was something meaningful in that. But she was really strong. I’m going to work even harder.”
Arisu: “We’re going to work even harder from here on out, so please keep watching us in 2025!”
After that, Kamiyu teamed up with Lei Ying Lee against Rika and Wakana. My focus was flagging a bit at this point of the show, so I don’t remember a whole lot from this match, but I do enjoy seeing Lee!
Kamiyu and Lee’s comments were partially in English:
Kamifuku: “Yesterday’s enemy is tomorrow’s friend, so we had a big fight in 2024, and then today we formed an Asian tag team between good friends.”
Lee: (in English) “Win, winner! Thank you for the Japanese fans, they give me feedback. The call was so amazing, and I have an amazing partner, Yuki!” (clapping) “Yeah, I had a good time this time in Japan, and last week, we had an awesome match, too. Y’know, I still want the title.” (she motions to Kamiyu’s belts) “Maybe a rematch soon?”
Kamifuku: (in English) “Yeah, ask the company, not me.” (laughs)
Lee: (in English) “Okay, I will. See you guys soon!”
Kamifuku: “Personally, I was glad that this muscle bomb put in so much work for me, and I really didn’t want to fight her again, so I’m super glad that we could team up today, but we faced Rika-san and Uehara for some reason, and Uehara’s gaze caught my attention a bit. So I hope to get another opportunity to work with Uehara. Rika-san is a bit hard to read and she’s scary, so please don’t hang around her.”
Some fun foreshadowing in there—after this show it was announced that Kamiyu and Wakana would be tagging in the Max Heart tournament this year. (Rip Toyo Mates… I hope they get to come back someday.)
Rika and Wakana’s comments:
Rika: “I lost in my first match of the new year.”
This was tricky to put into English: “リーさんも東京女子にはいない雰囲気をまとってて、こんな(右目下に絆創膏)になりましたけどやり返さないとなって思ってます。かみーゆも2冠チャンプになってもっと攻め込みたかったけどやられちゃったなって.”
“Lee-san had a vibe that isn’t present in TJPW, and even though I ended up with this (bandage under my right eye), I felt like I had to reply in kind. With Kamiyu being a 2-belt champ, I also wanted to attack her more, but she beat us. I’m disappointed. Even my omikuji wasn’t a good fortune. It said, ‘a storm-like disaster will befall you’, and then all of a sudden, disaster struck! But I can only go up from here, so I’m going to do it without holding back. Follow me, everyone! 2-0-2-5, I await you!”
Uehara: “When Lee-san came to Japan for the last big show, thinking that I wanted to fight her someday, I got a photo with her. My wish came true in this show. And besides, I worked with Kamifuku-san in the U.S. and was longing to do a singles match as well, so I was really happy that I got to fight her today.”
This was a bit tricky: “でもいつか上福さんと組んだり闘ったりいろいろしたいなと私は勝手に思ってます.”
“But selfishly, I want to team up with and fight Kamifuku-san someday and do a lot of different things.”
Rika’s response was also a bit tricky to translate: “…私は!? 私は今日限り! 解散だ! オマエのことなんて知るか!”
Rika: “…And what about me!? You’re only with me for today! We’re breaking up! I don’t care about you!”
Alright, that’s all I have translated for now. I’ll save the title matches for the next post.
