Wow, this was tough but it makes complete sense now!
Correct me if I’m wrong: “If we assume… (that the other options are wrong as I just thought) …then, as expected… (it’s because of her period)… いや…

Damn, I didn’t think about it 🤦‍♂️ You’re right, I will stop sharing pics, I hope the ones that are already uploaded aren’t a problem 🤞

it’s ok…you aren’t doing anything malicious … and there’s fair use in the US… it’s for education…and we all occasionally post pieces for various reasons… in general people try to be reasonable. The moderators are not unreasonable either…

Another thing, probably not as useful now but when you post the sentence as written it becomes searchable in the forums, not the pictures…This is especially helpful for others coming along behind you, as you can search for pieces or the sentence looking to see if anyone had the same question… the images won’t let you do that.

Don’t sweat it…just remember to be considerate and respectful of the author/artists works 🙂 Of course because some of the crossover and some of the references sometimes it hurts my wallet @ChristopherFritz making me buy everything this author has published so far 😉

Right, I should’ve though about it, that this way the words are not searchable, and till now the search function has shown to be a blessing.

Anyway, I did it totally without thinking, now that you made me realize it I’ll be sure to write everything down (especially things I’m concerned with) 🙏
I have the highest respect for the authors too

Chapter 2, page 9, panel 1-2, 2nd speech bubble interpretation (tough one)

> **Summary**
>
> This was very tough, I’ll break it down into peaces so I can show my reasoning
> [オレは] [暑い中] [こんなに頭をフル回転させて] [高木さんと戦っている] のに…
> Okay, here’s my reasoning (made with the help of the old posts)
>
> 1. We have オレは in contrast to the others seemingly having fun in the previous sentence
> 2. We have のに at the end. I put this second because it’s a “despite” that links to the previous sentence. Despite everyone seemingly having fun, →X.
> 3. 暑い中 should have had a particle, because it describes the ‘place’ where the rest of the sentence takes action = in the middle of this heat’ (or however it’s said in english).
> EDIT: thinking about it, this is also the reason of his head spinning - because he’s in the middle of the heat
> 4. こんなに is describing the action perpetrated on the object. The action is フル回転させて (causative of ‘making head go full operation’). The object is 頭 (head).
> 5. こんなに頭をフル回転させて = make (my) head do full operation _ **like this** _ (go back to the こんなに)
> 6. させて attaches to the rest of the sentence
> 7. 高木さんと戦っている easy peasy, means “making war with takagi-san
>
> Literal translation ⚠
> → (Despite everyone looks like having fun) …as for me, in the middle of this heat, head makes full operation and making war with takagi san ←
>
> Did I guess right?

Doubt on なんか, panel 3, page 9

> **Summary**

なんか literally means “something; anything,” but can also be used to express nebulous feelings as well, so it is a bit hard to directly translate. Maybe “something like～” is a good interpretation.

[Maggie-sensei](https://maggiesensei.com/2018/01/10/how-to-use-%E3%81%AA%E3%82%93%E3%81%8B-nanka/) has an article on なんか that might help clear it up for you.

You have the correct interpretation of the negative sentence ending

I don’t really know what’s it doing in this sentence

I think it’s kinda filler. It just makes the sentence a little more vague and less direct.

Without the なんか, and including the preceding speech bubble:

“Nishikata, are you thinking (about your guess) properly? For some time, haven’t you just been watching the girls who are swimming?”

With the なんか, two potential options, bolded words are what なんか provides (also some rearrangement to make the sentence flow a bit better in English):

“Nishikata, are you thinking (about your guess) properly? **I don’t know (for sure, but)**, haven’t you just been watching the girls who are swimming for quite some time?”

Or

“Nishikata, are you thinking (about your guess) properly? Haven’t you just been doing **something like** just watching the girls who are swimming for quite some time?”

For what it’s worth, I favor the first option out of these since なんか is placed at the start of the sentence.

Ok now I can definitely see what it does 👌 I wasn’t interested to understand how to translate it (also because as you said it’s quite difficult to represent in english)
I was mainly interested in understanding what it does to the sentence and your examples were perfect!

</div>

I can’t explain the 5th panel of page 9

男子ってすぐに女子の胸ばっか見るって言うし
I’m translating this sentence as (literally)
As for boys, it’s said that they _immediately_ (?) look only at girls breast.
I can’t really make any sense of this すぐに, also - I guess that the って言う at the end is a contraction for と言う that doesn’t specify anything apart from quoting what ‘is said’, and that the ending し particle there is giving a reason as for why takagi was doubting nishikata (previous line - ホントかなー)

</div>

While すぐに often is a time expression, where it does mean “at once; immediately,” one of the other potential uses is defined as:

ちょっとした事にも簡単に

An English word that matches fairly well to that would be “readily” or “easily”

Basically means “without hesitation or reluctance” (so it’s not a far stretch from immediately when one thinks about it).

</div>

Oh now it makes sense, I don’t know why but on the dictionaries this definition is not listed under すぐに.
I was convinced it was only a thing of ‘quickness’ rather than ‘easiness’ and ‘likeliness’ (if we can say so)
All good!

</div>

It doesn’t show up under すぐに, which I agree is strange, but it does show up under just 直ぐ (entry 3 on Jisho specifically). Often times, if you struggle with a word, it can help to drop a particle and search the word without it. This is especially the case while you are using JP-EN dictionaries, because they might not capture the nuances perfectly (as with any gloss) if there is a more common usage of a word with a particle.

Quickly throwing my translation attempt of the last speech bubble on page 9, this made me sweat a bit, too.

だならみてないって
I was going crazy trying to interpret the だから, because every single definition I kept getting was totally wrong here, but I’ve read in the article from maggie sensei that it can also be use to say something along the lines of ‘I’m telling you’ to strengthen an affirmation… I don’t really see the sense of it coming from the word から which marks the beginning point (physical or temporal), if someone’s able to make sense on this I’m all ears
Anyway, I’m totally lost again, on what is the ending って and what is the “ はっ！！！ “ in the next speech bubble 🤯

I have only recently made the switch (within the last 3 months or so) to trying to look things up in a Japanese dictionary before checking an English one, but it’s definitely tough.

Some words I can easily understand the Japanese definition, other words, I’m just looking at more unfamiliar vocab, and it isn’t especially helpful. That does start to become reinforcing though; it introduces new vocab, and when I actually figure out what something means, it gives me a clue as to what that new vocab means as well, so it’s worth the struggle.

Grammar is definitely mostly still in English, though. While I can sometimes read Japanese grammar posts like the Yahoo Answers one @ChristopherFritz posted the other day, I’m still lacking in a lot of grammar-specific vocabulary. I know the English terms because grammar was drilled heavily into me in school, but I don’t know Japanese grammar terms all that well. As a result, trying to make sense of a grammar point I don’t understand with vocabulary I don’t know very well yet is just too irksome most of the time. Usually I only go for Japanese grammar sources if the English sources wre very clearly missing some nuance and I already broadly understand the point and just feel like there is something small that isn’t clicking for me.
