Team: Taking it Slow (Little progress is better than no progress!)

I am happy to report going slow doesn’t mean progress is slow. I only attempt the last 33 vocabs in level 3 after I am comfortable with the kanji and it sure helped a lot, both mentally and the actual knowledge. Thank you Team Slow. :gift_heart:

Happy that you found a pace you are comfortable with!
It’s all about learning, there’s no point in blasting through content and getting burnt out or not properly internalising.

I’m definitely on this Slow Team and I’m proud of it. I said on this forum that “WK is never a race” too many times until I’m bored saying it, so when someone said that WK is not a race to me I’m kind of befuddled expressing myself though I know not everyone knew I said that “WK is never a race” on too many threads. I know my limit. I know myself. I’d muted all kinds of race cake threads. I ignore all fast team especially when one by one fall down and burn out and quit. I respect some fast team who respect slow team though. I also ignore anyone on Team Slow when one by one procrastinate and quit. I always do my reviews. I always cram in. Anyway. Enough talking. This screenshot should be enough.

Eh? I just noticed. I’ve been level 19 since November 3rd, 2018. I know that for sure because I always write it on Evernote manually whenever I level up. So that 20 days should be wkstats bug. Meh. And the right one when I level up from level 17 to 18 was October 18th, 2018. So the correct one should be 16 days. But I don’t care about this number as error/bug or any other bugs this site might have. I’m writing all this number to let you know, or just to share about my progress, in detail, that I’m on Team Slow. I don’t even come to wkstats.com often. Why? Because if I do that it feels like weighing my body and wondering why I haven’t lost weight. Oh, I blurred the first 4 levels, because it took about a month for me to decide to subscribe. Let’s just say my average up level is about two weeks to one month. Ah, why am I still talking? I thought I said enough talking? Ok, that’s it!

I clear my reviews at least once every day (most times, maybe 1-3 days a month I can’t find time to do, as I have no smartphone to do them on the go).
What does feel a bit disheartening are lessons though. I never get them down to 0. So after each level I spent about 2-3 weeks on vocab lessons, before I can finally learn the new radicals. Sometimes that feels discouraging. I would love at least a progress bar for the vocab. Does anybody know a script that does that?

Idk if there is a script specially built for that. A Progress Bar for the current level vocab only. I’d love to have that too on my WK Dashboard. You can always request it on this thread.

The wkstats site kind of works like a progress bar; you can see which vocab are in which SRS level by WankKani level. It’s colored, so easy to see which ones still are unlearned or apprentice on your current (or any) level.

having to go to another site is kind of meh :frowning:

But thanks to posting here, I was motivated to search through the API Thread and am now using the WK Dashboard Level Progress Detail Script ^^

@Miuschka you aren’t alone. Lessons are my struggle, too! Especially the vocab. I get it it, it’s supposed to help you remember the readings, but in my opinion there’s a real imbalance between the helpful ones vs. impractical or obvious ones.

Hello fellow slow burners! It’s nice to know I’m not the only one taking WK at a relaxed pace. I found Wanikani when I first moved back from Japan and thought it was an awesome way to keep up my language skills, then I went and had a baby so I had to vacation mode for like 2 years. :joy: I eventually unfroze my account and realized I needed to start over, so I did; blazed through levels 1-17, and then hit the brakes because I started getting into kanji I really didn’t know yet.

Additionally, I’m a homeschool mom so I spend my days adulting hard. For a while I kept trying to keep up that super high pace before I had a moment of zen and I stopped expecting myself to be able to study like a college student without a mortgage or kids or other hobbies.

And now here I am in club slow, where WK is a part of my life daily but it’s not the only part.

I started doing WaniKani a little over 8 months ago. Now I’m also doing a little KaniWani and KameSame. Sometimes I watch a few Genki videos on YouTube. I’m completely self-taught. I had no idea so many people in this world were trying to learn Japanese. It doesn’t matter to me who’s taking it slow or who’s taking it fast. I like to think of myself as trying to stick to the middle way. (Although, tbh, I see myself as more of a 毛虫(けむし、caterpillar) than a gazelle. Enjoy your journey however long, short, fast or slow it may be.

You are very welcome in Team Slow, but with your average level-up of 11 days I’d say there’s no “definitely” about it! If I could level up in 11 days I’d consider myself as belonging to Team Fast for sure.

This is the WK strategy: open up the API access so other people can develop the WK application further without them having to hire new developers

Summary
  1. I perceive team fast uplevel are three to seven days.

  2. They don’t seem to suffer at all to have Apprentice items much much more than 150, like 600 or even 700+. And they really enjoy racing to level 60. What is it what they call? Race to the cake? Mine is far than 7 days. People like Jp, Leebo, Ninkastmin, TheMusicalNinja surely are fast team. Look at their total apprentice item. And they don’t seem to be frustrated. Leebo once said “the lessons are there”. “Why don’t I learn it?” And what wonders me is he can still lower his apprentice items. He must be able to remember Kanji/Vocab on WK very very well. That could be because he resetted from level 60 though. I also feel easy on my 2nd account.

  3. I’m literally sick if my Apprentice items are about 120, not even 150. I’m not disturbed by my lessons if it’s more than 42+, like 57, or 160 lessons, as long as I can lower my Apprentice items to be less than 100, but not too low to 0 to 32, because then I felt WK becomes too easy with this workload and also I got bored by repeated reviews. I’m more disturbed if my total review is not 0. The Crabigators must be really mad at me. But by saying all this, I’m not against your opinion as a fast team. I just consider myself to be slow. Although I’m happy if I level up, I got headache if I have more than 100 apprentice items. Well, maybe I’m sometimes on the fast team, sometimes on the slow team, Idk. ╰( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )つ──☆*:・゚

  4. This is a long post. I use Summary to hide it. I hope other Wanikanians don’t mind reading this long.

Leebo’s apprentice items

Ninkastmin’s apprentice items

TheMusicalNinja’s apprentice items

I suppose that’s the key thing. All I’m saying is, one person’s “slow” is another person’s “unbelievably fast”. For you, 11 days is slow, for me, it is lightning fast! Both is fine, and good luck to us all in our progress!

Thank you! I take that as an encouragement and compliment 。.:☆*:・’(⌒―⌒)))

is secretly sad to not be part of the fast leveler list

A huge pile of difficult reviews (mostly caused by apprentice items not solidified in memory yet) isn’t fun for anyone. Some people have more tolerance to that, or simply know most of the content already (e.g. Leebo or me)

Ninkastmin’s apprentice count is due to reorder abuse. My understanding is that they are crazy busy right now, so they only focus on critical item to maintain leveling speed, letting the rest pile up. Hence the discrepancy between kanji and vocab learned, and the crazy number of apprentice item.

Sorry to barge in, I’ll see myself out.

I actually wanted to list you but remember I’m 5/8 tsundere so I won’t admit I … you. No, I won’t say it. Hey, anyway, your apprentice items were usually 67 on 0/0 thread.

I cannot find any proof of that in said thread
But yeah, my highest (recorded) count was 159 before the fast levels, with most levels at 100~120.
(So not craaaazy high)

:green_heart:

Maybe I looked at your profile instead when it was 67.
