Suddenly seeing a word a ton after learning it

Is it just me or is it when you learn a word you’ve never seen before, you start seeing it everywhere.

For example, I learned 案内 here from wanikani a few days ago and it’s already popping up multiple times in manga, shows, sns, etc. Is there like a psychological reason for this or is it just a weird coincidence?

It’s called the Baader-Meinhof Phenomenon or Frequency Bias.

But in language learning it’s one of the best ways to solidify the new knowledge. Seeing the words we learn in context at random is how things stick!

This is really true. I am so glad I started to consume native content. In a short period of time, I was able to experience a huge increase in vocab retention. Definitely not going to forget 案内 any time soon haha

I heard 食べ放題 on a trip to Japan almost immediately after first learning it in WaniKani. :slightly_smiling_face:

This definitely happens to me, and I’ve also started trying to force it as an alternative way of dealing with leeches. I started watching a ton of mountain-climbing videos on youtube last summer after failing to burn 登山 for the umpteenth time and it paid off!

Plus I have a long list of cablecars I want to ride when I get back to Japan.
