Here’s this week’s level up!
Heck yeah
Don’t forget to relogin!
It’s been 2 days since that post – and the number next to your avatar still shows that you’re level 6! ![]()

Oh I’ve given up on that one. I can’t be bothered to log in and out because I get logged out of here when the cache expires or something haha but thank you!
Yesterday, I went to my alma mater for the first time in a decade, considering I’m still living within a 5 minute walk to it. I recently learned the powers of my lifetime alumni card and the freedom to use the university library for free. I just can’t book conference rooms or check out books.
First order of business, find a cat. My uni has a dedicated group that feeds/rescues stray cats around the university grounds. I don’t know what the name of this cutie but I felt blessed to see it.
I ended up doing more lessons than normal (around 43 lessons yesterday) and watching another EP of TokiniAndy’s Genki 1 Grammar series. I’m still a bit procrastinating with grammar at this point, so I’m taking all the chances to insert it in my lessons. I still rely heavily with Bunpro for the grammar points and reviewing WaniKani’s Guru pile in sentences.
I found some Japanese books but didn’t find Genki nor Minna No Nihongo books. I tried sifting through the reference books I got but I think I have a bias with Genki at this point.
There’s also an incoming super typhoon this coming week, so I imagine I’ll be holed up in my condo, not going to the office, and doing some Japanese lessons without interruptions.

Last week has been a bit of struggle. The vocabulary list was quite challenging to study, on top of the previous vocab coming in for review. So there were some confusion on my end, specifically on the 近い, 近く, 近づく. So yeah, it’s something I‘m working on this week. I re-study the vocabs and kanji when they come in the reviews.
On the other hand, I have been consistent with Bunpro somehow. I’m still at a snail’s pace of maybe ~9 ish lessons per week, and evening reviews only. I’ve also restarted Cure Dolly and I’m currently at lesson 5: verb groups and the -te form. I’m also taking a peek at Satori Reader last weekend. I don’t think I’ll frustrate myself and incorporate it right now, but I’m happy to at least understand basic sentences, at least the ones that use the を particle.
It’s all the more challenging because I’ve been obsessed with a manhwa - which I just finished today. The updates will be rolling in slowly, and from the manga aggregator I’m reading it from, it will take sometime to pile it up again. I can hopefully focus again and do more Japanese related studies, unless I decide to start picking up Sakamoto Days again.

Congrats on the level-up! This is so…きゅうl
Haha.. Get it?..
I’m sorry
Haha! Yes! That’s quite the clever one!
I was doing a review a while ago and 南 Kanji rolls around. I could swear it was なん when I used to do reviews before but today it was changed to みなみ? When did this happen? Will this also apply to 西, 北 Kanjis? Although とう was still the accepted reading for 東 Kanji.
iirc they changed 北 first a while ago to kunyomi and recently changed the others to match
Jury’s out on it but at least I think it’s more consistent hopefully? But if とう is accepted for 東 then maybe not
Ah you’re right! 北 was changed and this is my second time around so when I used ほくreading on it, I was thrown off. I haven’t gotten to the 西 Kanji reading yet but it was still せい. This was a master to enlightenment review so it was probably changed just recently.
Last week, I only did WaniKani lessons + reviews, and Bunpro reviews. I will say I can recall around 95% of the vocabularies when it comes around in the Bunpro reviews. The only thing is that some words that are close in meaning that I had to undo the answers to try the other vocab that I know of. So I think in terms of retention, this time around is better.
It’s so much better that today I actually dreamed of doing the reviews. It was so vivid that I remember getting the items right halfway through before getting woken up by my alarm lmao. But now that I woke up, I don’t remember what I reviewed ![]()

This week is still a continuation of the struggles with last week. I could feel the fatigue of morning lessons and hourly reviews at this point because some of the items are leveling up to Master/Enlightened. So I might actually lessen my daily lesson from 25 to 10 per day perhaps. I even forget to do the bunpro reviews on some days, and I have completely stopped new grammar lessons from Cure Dolly. Although that helped me focus on the を particle, and sometimes に. So when I go through the reviews, sometimes I use the previous vocab to create words or phrases.
Work is also not easy this month. I’m just wanting to end October already and get into the holidays soon.

Hey congrats, going by your projections in the first post you’re slightly ahead of schedule right?
I just started Bunpro (slightly early, but I was too curious) and I’m shocked by how differently the words function in context compared to the early impression of the words I developed using WK. Did you also find this to be a hurdle ?
Thanks a lot! I am on schedule yes, and that projection list had gone through an overhaul haha
How is Bunpro working for you so far?
Yeah that’s true! This is one of the reasons why I mostly use Bunpro as an “Extra” review of the vocab I learn from WK. On one hand, I am able to retain (and even recall) the vocab pretty well with Bunpro. But the downside is, in some contexts, I would have to go through several similar vocabs in order to get the correct one. I’m more forgiving with Bunpro in a sense that when I don’t know the vocab, I just mark it wrong so it goes into my review more often.
There’s this word, house, for example that has two readings - いえ and うち - but in WK, you’re only forced to remember both readings. In Bunpro, it taught me that いえ refers to the house as a structure or building, and うち has a context of referring to your house as “home.”
That’s a great example. I think Bunpro is trying to make us sensitive to those distinctions you point out so that our speech/understanding is more robust. I started to see WK as a “what” tool and Bunpro as the “how” tool, meaning WK expands my vocab and Bunpro shows me how to use that vocabulary in natural sentences. I’d be missing half the picture if I used just one.
I’m not positive my interpretation is correct.
