Discussion Guidelines
Spoiler Courtesy
Please follow these rules to avoid inadvertent ネタバレ. If you’re unsure whether something should have a spoiler tag, err on the side of using one.
Any potential spoiler for the current week’s reading need only be covered by a spoiler tag. Predictions and conjecture made by somebody who has not read ahead still falls into this category.
Any potential spoilers for external sources need to be covered by a spoiler tag and include a label (outside of the spoiler tag) of what might be spoiled. These include but are not limited to: other book club picks, other books, games, movies, anime, etc. I recommend also tagging the severity of the spoiler (for example, I may still look at minor spoilers for something that I don’t intend to read soon).
Any information from later in the book than the current week’s reading (including trigger warnings that haven’t yet manifested) needs to be hidden by spoiler tags and labeled as coming from later sections.
Instructions for Spoiler Tags
Click the cog above the text box and use either the “Hide Details” or “Blur Spoiler” options. The text which says “This text will be hidden” should be replaced with what you are wishing to write. In the case of “Hide Details”, the section in the brackets that is labelled “Summary” can be replaced with whatever you like also (i.e, [details=”Chapter 1, Pg. 1”]).
Hide Details results in the dropdown box like below:
Example
This is an example of the “Hide Details” option.
The “Blur Spoiler” option will simply blur the text it surrounds.

Posting Advice
When asking for help, please mention the page number, and check before posting that your question hasn’t already been asked. As the threads get longer, it becomes more convenient to use the Search function, which is located in the upper right corner of the forum. It is the magnifying glass which is near your profile picture! The best way to search is usually to type part of the sentence you are confused about, and select “in this topic”. This will show you all posts within the current thread which has that string of text.
Be sure to join the conversation! It’s fun, and it’s what keeps these book clubs lively! There’s no such thing as a stupid question! We are all learning here, and if the question has crossed your mind, there’s a very good chance it has crossed somebody else’s also! Asking and answering questions is a great learning opportunity for everyone involved, so never hesitate to do so!

Don’t forget to set this thread to Watching in order to be notified when weekly updates get posted!
Please vote on preferred schedule etc - I’m not sure how best to break it up. The first couple of chapters are the shortest, so splitting that week seems less useful, but I’m open to suggestions. 1 option may be to divide chapters 3 and 4 as they’re the longest ones.
I know this section is written in the home thread template (since it’s primarily focused on helping folks get started with the intricacies of running a “main” book club thread), so this isn’t on you but:
Just my two cents, generally speaking, the offshoot clubs tend to be a little less trafficked, so unless there turns out to be a large membership, having a thread per week is usually a bit much. We trend towards making the offshoot clubs organized by volume threads instead. (So, all discussion for Volume 2 would be in one thread).
I tend to break up the discussion within the thread a bit by adding a poll every week to indicate the new chapter start.
Volume Thread Example (Though this doesn’t need to be copied exactly, since this was one I made prior to the Tips standard being created)
Side-note, I hope to join up with this club in the future, but just don’t have the time currently to continue with the series. I want to circle back to it for sure though!
Sorry I wanted to write you before you got to it, but totally forgot.
I’m personally more of a fan to have the book club and the offshoot using the same home thread since it makes it easier to find all of the stuff for the people coming to the club at a later date. I’m gonna ask the mods to change the original home thread to a wiki so feel free to use that! (No problem if you want to keep the separate thread)
Thanks - I missed the bit about weekly threads. I was definitely planning on a single thread per volume as I suspect we’ll end up reading fairly quickly. And there are already a fair number of volumes in the series.
For the dissenting opinion, I like the offshoot thread separate from the main book club’s home thread, as the original club thread is sort of like a “volume one home thread”. (Not that I mind either way, just the preference I personally lean toward.)
That said, as there’s no rule on this, you’ll see some clubs do it one way and some do it the other way.
I’ll leave the polls open for another couple of days then put up a schedule. It’s split evenly on start date and I think 13/8 is a bit soon so will plan for starting on 20/8 at one chapter a week unless the votes change dramatically in next 2 days.
We can always increase the pace later.
In the end I opted to leave the thread as is without merging it, mostly as the voting had started and I was too tired!
Ok, so it seems there’s 3 of us! Schedule will be 1 mission per week based on current voting, but none of us voted on start date. I’ve got the ball rolling with a 1 week break vote but I don’t feel strongly about this. Any other opinions @2OC3aOdKgwSGlxfz@definitelynotdenzo?
Also apologies - I realise that 2 weeks break is Saturday 22/10 but I can’t edit it now.
@fyrember what was your preference for the break with “other?” And @WaniTsunami how strongly do you feel about the 2 week break - the majority is for one week, but I could push it back to keep more readers.
It looks like we’re planning to start tomorrow with volume 3 - any major objections? I’ll probably be either late posting the thread or do it tonight. On a dive trip and there’s a day trip planned tomorrow. But I’m unwell and couldn’t dive today so
It looks like one chapter per week, we’ve almost all abstained from the question of the break. I was also thinking of voting for no break - is anyone strongly against this idea? If not, I’ll put a schedule up in the next few days starting next week.
