Here’s an idea. How about adding an option to be tested in the Review stack three ways (rather than two today) on each vocabulary word (and maybe each Kanji too?). So what I mean is:
Write the kanji in hirigana (just like today)
Give the English meaning (just like today)
AND (optional) Say it out loud (new)
have the app create new flash cards for speaking tests!
that way instead of me saying it out loud to myself to help me try and remember I get credit for it AND you can test that I am pronouncing it correctly (probably using some AI)
This…..why do you want me to suffer sensie
? I already am having issues with typo and now you want see how wanikani tells me i am even speaking wrong ( which as a beginner should not be a issue ) ? This is the type of ideas my class bullies would have
, you are not a bully , right sensie ?

I know the third party iOS and Android app Kakehashi has this as a beta feature if you wish to try it
You could try having a separate window up for text-to speech and a Japanese keyboard on a mobile device and see if the correct kanji shows up after you say it? I think this might be a tough hurdle for everyone who uses WK to try to aim for. Personally, I have used text-to-speech to see if my pitch accents are correct or not. It also helps with long vowels and other things that I don’t notice in my speech that I’m sure a native would notice.
I tried something similar but it is too clunky. I do WK on my iPhone. If I speak the word, it types out the Kanji for the response which I then have to delete and retype as hiragana /katakana. That takes too long to do with every word
Yes, this would have to be not in WK but for your own notes app to see if you got the pitch correct. The text-to-speech input is not something to be used for WK since it does automatically change it into kanji. It’s for personal checking only. I use it to double check 雨 vs 飴 and the various はしs to see which one comes up with what pitch accent. This is the only way that I have to check pitch without asking a native to test me/ tell me if I’m doing it wrong.
