I’m confused why the lyrics use になっていた rather than になった and what the difference in nuance is because I would assume “I had become” would be になった in Japanese but になっていた I would think to translate as “I had been becoming”
なる is a verb that describes a state change. When such a verb is in ている form, the meaning is not that the described action is happening continuously, but rather that the change that occurred is still in effect.
なった - became (typically used when the focus is on the instant in question, or the change just happened)
なっている - became or have become (the change is still in effect)
なっていた - had become (the change happened, then was active for some time as of when it was described, and in the example it has 目覚めたときに as the cut off for the point of description)
As an aside, describing an impartial change, as in “I had been becoming” would be something like
なりかけていた (where ～かける expresses that partway meaning and ていた puts it in the past framework)
