I recently learned, that 能 is used for Noh - Wikipedia No-Theater.
The help for the reading in Wanikani is:
This ability to predict the future makes you famous and now everyone knows your name: Nostradamus (のう)! And now that people know about your name and special ability, everyone will love you!
To connect Nostratdamus to the Kanji is inferior to remember it to the No-Theater. Ever seen it? What an ability the actors have!
I have seen a lot of readings which would come natural to a japanese Leaner, because they are connect to common culture an history of Japan.
Why not use these links, but give an somehow academic constructed help?
WaniKani tries, on the whole, to avoid “shaped like itself” mnemonics, despite how useful they would be, and even when the word in question is common knowledge among English speakers. Think 京 using “Kyoto” as the mnemonic is the only example I can think of off the top of my head.
Aye, understood. I do not suggest replace the readings, but add them. Get the neutral reading with Nostradamus, but get the useful hint as well. Would anyone forget the reading of this kanji, once he linked it to the real thing?
The reading のう occurs for several different kanji. I happen to quite like Nostradamus as the recurring character for these mnemonics because he’s a good deal more vivid than Noh is for me. I also prefer WaniKani to be consistent and give me the same mnemonic character to play with for the same pronunciation. For these reasons, I would not like to see this one changed.
