Hi! I’ve got an issue with how the queue is filled. I’m not sure if there is a tool to handle this, or this could be a good feature request. The thing is, I do reviews during the day whenever I have some minutes, and because I try to leave the queue clean at the end of the day then I do the rest before I go to sleep. I think this is important because if I’ve done new lessons in the morning and I leave them unreviewed until the next day maybe too much time has passed and I would have forgotten them. Now, the queue will look like this:
Now, the problem with this is, I don’t want to do reviews at night. But because I just clean whatever is left at night, once the period is of more than 24h, the reviews will start more an more being at night, and more and more later.
You may think, then stop doing reviews at night, right? Well, I want to do the reviews at night, for stuff that is relatively new. So basically I think it would be cool if lets say master+enlightened stuff is either postponed or advanced, so it starts appearing in the morning, and not at night. This way I can just clean the critical stuff at night, which is what I wanted to do to begin with.
The alternative that I’m planning to do if I find no other solution is stop doing reviews at 6pm, but this is probably going to mean a lot more errors for apprentice stuff.
By the way, I know there are some reordering scripts and such, but I don’t want to enter into this stuff. I’d prefer if I just can clean the queue and be done with it.
The reviews will appear a set time after your last review of the item.
Apprentice 1 → 4 hours → Apprentice 2
Apprentice 2 → 8 hours → Apprentice 3
Apprentice 3 → 1 day → Apprentice 4
Apprentice 4 → 2 days → Guru 1
Guru 1 → 1 week → Guru 2
Guru 2 → 2 weeks → Master
Master → 1 month → Enlightened
Enlightened → 4 months → Burned
Since most of it is measured in days, and not in hours, you’ll get the higher level reviews at the same time of day as your last review. If you do your reviews in the evening then the higher level reviews will appear in the evening.
If you don’t use any reordering scripts, I don’t think there’s any way around this. It’s just the way the timing on WaniKani works. Sorry!
You could change when you do lessons so that they reach the day review lengths earlier in the day. You’re accuracy will take a hit as you adjust, but should even out soon enough.
Thanks a lot for trying to help! Yes, I know why this issue is happening. It’s just that I want it to behave differently XD.
If you don’t use any reordering scripts,
Just to clarify, my problem with this, is (1) they would not guarantee that I leave cleaned my most critical items (meaning, at which amount do I stop doing the reviews) and most importantly, they are just too invasive, because what I need modified is just a very very small use case, and there are other bad side effects of reordering the queue. For example, I have no problem with doing guru or whatever at night, if they were on the queue for 10 hours let’s say. So I just want these items to be a bit more flexible, so if it appears at 1 month, why not 1 month and 6 hours if this fits better the schedule I want to do?
You could change when you do lessons so that they reach the day review lengths earlier in the day.
This is also a good idea. I mean, I’d have to first, stop doing reviews at 6pm as I plan as a last resort, plus not doing lessons after 1pm, for example. Except on days where I have no other option. But again, the nice thing of Wanikani in theory is you don’t need to worry about other thing than just opening the app and do your reviews, so it would be nice to have a way to give a small slack to reviews to match your preferred time.
Just in case the developers see this thread, and this can be considered as a feature request, you may think mine is a weird use case, or I’m trying to do some convoluted stuff. But in reality I just want some very reasonable use case:
(1) I want to do lessons and reviews whenever I have time for it.
(2) I want to leave the queue clean before I go to sleep as a good practice.
Just by doing this and how Wanikani algorithm works, this means the reviews of before going to sleep are going to end up being brutal. I think it is very reasonable that in this case, reviews that are not urgent can be postponed to the next day, and the thing is, there is no way to separate urgent from non-urgent on the queue.
Something that may or may work for you depending on when you go to sleep, but I do my lessons right after midnight. That way, I can go through the first reviews in the morning after waking up, and the second set of reviews will be somewhere in the afternoon , depending on when I woke up. And then since reviews are by days (minus 1 hour), my largest batches of reviews usually stick to the afternoon.
Thanks for the suggestion. That is also a good approach. Me personally try not to use the computer at night too much and sometimes am tired to learn new stuff so I prefer to distribute learning through the day. What I’m doing for now is I’m stopping all reviews at around 5pm, and before going to sleep, depending on the day, I go through part of the queue using a reorder script configured to give preference to overdue items. The rest of the day I use just regular ordering. I still think it is far too much effort for something that could be solved with a setting that overrides review time, but for now this seems good enough.
I think a setting that says:
“Prefer reviews at [__] o’clock”. => When set, if a review wait time is of more than a day, it will appear at the selected time.
