Hello! I just had a question about the kanji reading that Wanikani chose.
It seems that the kanji and vocab reading for 宮 are both みや, but on jisho the 音読み is listed as きゅう. Is it just because みや’s just that much more common?
The onyomi is correctly listed as きゅう here as well.
It’s just that they teach the kunyomi in the kanji lesson, as they do with some other kanji as well. Typically when the onyomi isn’t going to appear in another word for a long time (in this case, it gets used in a level 50 word, 宮廷 きゅうてい).
But WK’s categorization of the readings is correct.

Huh. I feel like I’ve come across the ぐう reading more often than the きゅう reading, but it’s not listed on WaniKani at all. Though, that may be because I’ve visted more Shinto shrines than I have imperial palaces…

Yes, the advanced readings of ぐう (jouyou but taught in middle school) and く (jouyou but taught in high school) are not present. きゅう is taught alongside the kanji in elementary school 3rd grade. I think it would be a good idea to have all the jouyou readings at least.
My comment above was merely to say that they hadn’t left きゅう out or labeled みや the onyomi.
