🍃 Shenmue Tree - a Study "Lounge!" 🍂

Text expander is a program that lets you assign long strings of text to short strings of text, so that every time you type the short string it is automatically replaced with the long string.

I’m fine with being sleepy :ok_hand:

Oh wow! That sounds very useful! Tell me more about it tomorrow, I am exhausted and I just ended up putting the poll thread on mute because I’ve realized the ilk that linger in there. Not too impressed with the community at the moment :unamused:

Eh, poll is usually harmless fun. But you’ll find bad eggs in any basket that gets big enough (or something). But do what’s right for you, obviously that escalated in a weird way so I understand your reaction

Good night tho, see you tomorrow~

Oh yes, I know some bad eggs exist. But the fact that nobody else recognized this brought to my attention that it’s really just social oddity fun, nothing more. He’s blocked and I quite put him in his place, so I don’t care about that, but If you can just ignore the past 20 posts to resume your fun it says something. Some quality regulars have joined in the cooking thread, but I will not be joining in their “fun” anymore.

Sorry if I missed something, but I think for most people video games are not a high stakes topic so it was interpreted as playful over-acting of your positions regarding the merits of Shenmue vs other games, and the realization that it might not be that was kind of shocking, at least to me. I think people genuinely didn’t know how to react. And I apologize, but the only person in POLLs who tried to resume the fun after that exchange was me:/ I tried adding my two cents to the conversation and attempting to diffuse the tension a bit, but the thread pretty much ground to a halt when you left anyway.

I’m not really sure how you’ll react to this…

I muted the post, so I can’t go back and look…

But no, I was acting playfully and he continued to presume he knew better until I corrected him. Ultimately resulting in him attacking my brother (playfully? No I don’t think so).

And no it was not you who I noticed trying to resume the fun, but someone else and I attempted to apologize for me being a part of the previous conversation but nobody cared.

In essence? Selfishness and ambiguity. Take away the “air” of that thread gaining 100 posts an hour and be away with you.

ah i only saw some of that convo. late for me.
can be quite abrasive on the surface but it’s just that: surface.
i think because we all know each other so well in that thread, sometimes people forget to ease newcomers in. am really sorry you had to experience that.
he’s really funny and not to be taken seriously. but i’ve had moments as well where i wondered. i get it.

hope you come back. it’s a really nice crowd!

edit: i should have read the posts above. sounds like a game argument. i prob would have skipped anyway! again, really sorry it went sour. what a pity.

It’s all good, and I appreciate you understanding what I experienced. Started off silly enough but began getting odder and odder as I felt targeted by him…

I may come back, but for now I’d prefer not to encounter him. I know most of you are lighthearted and just want to have fun, but kind of like you said, a newcomer who encounters someone like that can be really put off!

Glad I still have you to talk to in the cooking and kitty thread

Here's my よつばと! attempt for today! Pages 25, 26, 27, 28

Page 25 - 1/18/22

あははは!

Ahahaha!

かわった子だなあ…

An unusual child…

ベランコれめくなのかあ (I don’t even know if I identified all the kana right… I could not figure this out at all!)

あそういえばうちの隣の空き家に

Ah, now that I think of it, there’s a vacant house next to ours.

新しい人がくるつて

New people are moving in…

もしかして

Possibly…

くる

Could it come to be?

Page 26 - 1/18/22

うあつ

Ah, hey!

うあーっ!!

Ah!!

手!手!

Hands! Hands!

手はなしちゃだメよ!!

Release your hands!!

て?

Hands?

ぽっ (some sort of happy sound??)

Page 27 - 1/18/22

(No text - Yotsuba goes flying off the swing!)

Page 28 - 1/18/22

(could not figure out the sound of her landing on her feet)

ぺた

(?) Kind of like her saying “oi” ?

だ大丈夫!?

Are you okay!?

大丈夫だった!?

Are you okay!? (couldn’t figure out the difference between this sentence and the sentence above?)

I feel like it’s a shame I wasn’t there, cause I could’ve provided an encouraging bonk smack and 2 buckets of cold water for each of you :stuck_out_tongue: .

Way to go for getting yami so riled up. I swear this has never happened before.

I sometimes find Logo a little much as well, but then I either fight sarcasm with sarcasm or a double-dose of politeness. Either way, not worth taking it personally
Better spend that energy on studying or something :muscle:

:joy: I wish you had been there to bonk! I don’t have the knowledge to correct people too often, and I tend to shy away from it anyway because I can (obviously) get defensive!

yami got riled up?? Oh dear now I’m confozzled… I muted the POLL market after this happened because I was a tad worked up…

VERY good strategy I think!!!

I agree, I’m over it now after getting a good night’s sleep

Thank you Tokeru!!!

Often these aside remarks don’t use furigana, and often they’re hand-written, all making the kanji difficult to figure out!

(はじ)めて is what we have here.

(It gets easier when you know more kanji. But I do still ignore these aside remarks from time to time…)

So it’s “is it her first time on a swing?”

Thank you

ざしゃー “zashaaa” sound of landing and sliding on sand🙃

:joy: I can totally picture this sound now!

ダメよ! Don’t release your hands.

It’s ぱっ, and it’s the sound of her opening her hands.

It’s the sound of her landing on her backside.

The first だ here is kind of a stutter - like, Are… are you okay?

Well, the main difference is that it’s past tense now. As for why, I’m not entirely sure. Japanese uses past tense for events which occured on the past even in situations where English would continue using present tense - for example ありがとうございます = thank you (for something you’re currently doing for me or will do for me in the future) versus ありがとうございました = thank you (for something you did for me in the past) - but it feels to me here like whether or not Yotsuba is 大丈夫 is a state that would be continuing into the present.

Gah! That makes so much more sense

Ahhh a stutter! I see, yet another thing for me to put in my memory and hopefully not forget

Eek, all the little grammar nuances are so intimidating!

Thanks Belthazar!!!

Welp, I woke up not feeling optimistic about today, but I did quite well I think!

  • all reviews, including 5 more lessons just because. I could probably do 10 more lessons before bed as I only have 68 reviews tomorrow.
  • read 3 pages of よつばと! while attempting to use Lapis again, but for now I don’t think the beta is going to work out for me.
  • finally began Minna no Nihongo, however, I really only read the fairly lengthy introduction to the book and got to the start of lesson 1, which I will hopefully get into tomorrow.
  • also cooked yakisoba and will be making my sushi in a bit
  • neglected Torii but oh well

A part of me wants to really dive into the sentence structure book I just got because I keep picking it up and getting distracted, but so far it seems like good stuff, so perhaps I will do that before bed.

Thanks to all for always taking the time to help with various things

Does anyone here use Twitter’s Spaces for communicating with other practitioners of the language? I think it’d be fun. Discord should have a server about this too but I don’t know any.

I do not! I think it could be fun, but although I have a twitter account, I don’t use any social media anymore and I think I have 0 followers and follow 0 people  Same in terms of Discord, I have used it in the past but not in a while.

I’m sure other people in the Community would like this idea though!
