Serious bug? Some items showing wrong level progress or wrong SRS timings

I’m afraid there is a serious bug with the SRS timings or the level progress. I’m going to email a bug report to wanikani, but I’m wondering if anyone else also noticed this. It only shows on a few items, so it might be difficult to catch.

Here is what my level progress in my dashboard looked like this morning:

Notice that is shows that 23 of 32 kanji passed. If I count all the kanji with the solid green bar, there are 23, so ok so far.

I just had the review for “buzzer.” This is what I got after answering it correctly:

How could it had progressed to Apprentice since it should’ve already been Guru?

But this is what the kanji page for “buzzer” shows:

Notice that it shows “Apprentice” and next review in 2 days.

But the correct answers info contradicts that: there are no incorrect answers for reading, so we can ignore that and look only at the meaning answers which shows a streak of 4 correct answers (SRS 5 Guru), followed by an incorrect answer, followed by 2 correct answers (SRS 5). So, based on the answers, the item should be at the Guru stage.

Then I looked at wkstats for confirmation:

wkstats shows the “buzzer” kanji at Apprentice 4. And it shows 16 kanji in the Apprentice stage while my dashboard only shows 12, so there are at least 3 other kanji with the same issue: “rob”, “employ” and “branch off”.

I don’t know when this started, but I suspect it was when the lesson picker was released. Below is what my progress bar looks like. I adjust my lessons to always level on Thursday evenings, every 7 days until level 31, then every 14 days. But, coincidentally or not, when the lesson picker was released, it took me 16 days to level up, and I don’t know why as I was picking the lessons to keep my process the same as before. I next leveled up in 12 days to bring my level up day back to Thursday, and I’ve been keeping a close eye now which is why I noticed this. If I again don’t level up on Thursday, then I’m pretty sure this bug is the cause.

Did you get the kanji wrong at any point? Once you Guru something, it’s always recorded as having been Guru’d. If you get it wrong on a later review, it’ll drop back to Apprentice, but still counts as a Guru’d item for the purposes of levelling up.

Yes, I did get wrong reviews on them. Am I looking at the level progress incorrectly then? I thought if you have 4 correct answers in a row, the item is Guru (SRS 5). Then one incorrect review followed by a correct review sends it back to Apprentice 4. Then one correct review advances it to Guru again.

You drop two SRS levels per incorrect answer if the item is at Guru or above. Getting it correct after getting it incorrect doesn’t move you up again in the same review. You need to get it right in a separate review session in order to move up again.

The math is like this:
You had 4 correct reviews, so that brings the item up to guru 1. Then you had a mistake, which is 1 incorrect and 1 correct review (notice how you have one more meaning reviews than reading). Because the item was past the guru stage, it dropped by 2 SRS levels, down to apprentice 3. After that, you had another, correct review, back to apprentice 4.

Thank you both. I wasn’t aware that at SRS 5 level and up, a mistake drops the item 2 levels.
No bug then, just me not understanding how it works.
