so, regarding nominations -
In the ABBC we proposed moving Slam Dunk to the BBC, we thought it would be more appropriate here as it’s Natively level 25, paper only and doesn’t have complete furigana coverage. That’s a bit hard for ABBC but seems just right for BBC.
It’s an epic manga and I’d love to read it, so I wanted to improve on the existing nomination post when moving it over.
I think putting up some images from the manga spreads would be nice, but I’d need to actually buy it first and take photos. Soooo, before I do that, I thought it might be a good idea to ask people with more experience which edition to buy. There are three:
Does anyone know if there is a difference between editions in global availability, or any other insight on what people here might want? Here’s an informal poll. We could also poll should the book be chosen, but I thought this poll and comments might help me at least get going on the nomination.
I was going to suggest whichever version matches the digital edition, but it looks like there is no digital edition!
If you go with the original people can always choose to upgrade, versus choosing a longer or more expensive edition might exclude some people.

I have a Japanese friend who taught me some quotes from the manga series, and after looking into it, realised this is really well known as one of the THE most legendary manga ever. It would be a great asset in the book club archives and I’m pretty sure an offshoot would form to read the whole series (31). Flicking through my copy, the artwork is incredibly dynamic and really gets the intensity of the scenes across. The story includes great character development and reviewers are always really attached to them.

The dialogue is fun and the vocab is easy enough. You can enjoy it in it’s entirety without being a Japanese expert and the pacing feels good. Its also one of the greatest manga of all time by one of the best mangaka of all time… So a great motivator to keep reading and find high quality content with a low bar for entry.

How much effort would you need to read this book?
Not sure if I understood you incorrectly or the store just updated, but the jp store has the kindle version.
I have added the short story to the list of nominations, but I have a couple of things that I just now noticed:
if it is not the same then we should probably not list it as it would just cause confusion. How different are the two versions?
The second challenge with this short story is the length. It can probably be read in 1 week and that would be uncharted territory for this club. It might be a better idea to read the whole short story bundle “Japanese Stories for Language Learners”, but I’m open to discussion.
That is gonna be interesting if this wins. The last time this book club read a purely physical manga was Aria. To make it easier for people to source the manga it might be a good idea to add links to where to buy the other versions with a disclaimer
Couldn’t we just have two winners if it wins? Reading a bilingual graded reader (Japanese Stories for Language Learners) in a beginner book club feels a bit weird… (Although maybe I’m the only one thinking so - maybe we could add both versions to the poll.)
I don’t know your level so but I feel like I am a true “beginner”. I know N5 grammar, most of N4 and a bit of N3. I can read manga of Yotsuba level, and a bit harder if I’m OK to go very slowly. But long sentences are hard to approach and a real book feels intimidating, I don’t have yet the experience or the stamina to read many long sentences in a row. So based on that I don’t think it can be expected for the BBC to read it all in one week. I wouldn’t want that for sure.
Sorry I don’t own the book so I don’t know. I think it’s fair to mention that they are different, because if people own the book they might be confused when the reading start.

ah! I actually own this version so let me check. The intro to the book says it pulled the story from:

but it is way way different! Not entirely sure what’s going on there, it does also say this was downloaded in 2017, but I doubt it would’ve changed this drastically since then.
Yeah for sure. It is designated as a short club so if this were to win the second place would also get picked.

We usually schedule things based on the experience of works we have read in the past. The closest comparison would probably be the short stories of the 小川未明童話集・Ogawa Mimei: Collection of Children’s Stories club.The first story that was read in that club has about the 2/3 of characters as 雪女. So a two week club would probably the furthest it should be stretched.
If that is the case I would recommend removing the references to the bundled version all together. Maybe only leave it in a detail box with a disclaimer that the text is significantly different.
