[Seeking Nominations!] Beginner Japanese Book Club // Now Reading: この美術部には問題がある!

We’re officially done with the ロジカとラッカセイ ・ Rojica and Rakkasei book club, and I wrote a little post about it. Maybe it’s interesting for you if you’re into stats:

(Also, if you dropped the book club, it would be great if you could select the reason in the anonymous poll on that topic!)

so, regarding nominations -
In the ABBC we proposed moving Slam Dunk to the BBC, we thought it would be more appropriate here as it’s Natively level 25, paper only and doesn’t have complete furigana coverage. That’s a bit hard for ABBC but seems just right for BBC.

It’s an epic manga and I’d love to read it, so I wanted to improve on the existing nomination post when moving it over.

I think putting up some images from the manga spreads would be nice, but I’d need to actually buy it first and take photos. Soooo, before I do that, I thought it might be a good idea to ask people with more experience which edition to buy. There are three:

  • Original 31 volumes Tankoubon (marked ジャンプコミックス )
  • 24 volume Kanzenban (完全) - includes more color spreads and nicer overall but twice the cost (currently) compared with the other options
  • 20 Shinsouban 新装再編版 - some complaints that the thick books are difficult to read and paper too thin

Does anyone know if there is a difference between editions in global availability, or any other insight on what people here might want? Here’s an informal poll. We could also poll should the book be chosen, but I thought this poll and comments might help me at least get going on the nomination.

Which volume of Slam Dunk would you (theoretically) like to buy? (Select up to 2 options)
  • Tankoubon
  • Kanzenban
  • Shinsouban
  • Any of them!

I was going to suggest whichever version matches the digital edition, but it looks like there is no digital edition!

If you go with the original people can always choose to upgrade, versus choosing a longer or more expensive edition might exclude some people.

Is there a page up for スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり yet? If yes, I couldn’t find it

It’s in the Book Club subcategory under the Japanese Language category

Ah, thank you. I’ll make sure to check there next time.

Someone should really add it to the master list.

I’m more surprised it wasn’t linked in the first post yet. I just fixed that.

I forgot to add the link when it was posted. Sorry about that thank you to @TobiasW for adding it and I have also added it to the master list.

On another note, a quick update about the schedule in the near future:

  • 15th July: スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり book club starts
  • 7th August: Polling for the next book club starts
  • 16th September: Last week of スーパーの裏でヤニ吸うふたり starts
  • 30th September: New book club starts

Just put a reminder on my calender. I haven’t properly voted for a book yet, so I’ll take some time to go over the nominations and vote this time.

Just in time for the ヤニ吸う book club starting tomorrow, there is a free 47-page sample (covering first three chapters) available on BookWalker. What a nice coincidence! Give it a try and join the book club if it catches your interest.

The new pick for the BBC is starting today (well, tomorrow the 15th to be more precise). We invite everyone to enjoy - we’ll be starting at a slower pace, so that beginners can get used to the writing style. Hope to see you there!

Ps. I will try to edit the title and first post of the thread, but if someone can double check if it’s all properly done later on it would be great :slightly_smiling_face: (Edit: I don’t know if I’m able to edit the title)

It just needed the title changed to this current pick, right? I updated it for you

Slam Dunk (スラムダンク)

image

Natively: Level 24

Summary

Taken from MAL:

Hanamichi Sakuragi, infamous for his temper, massive height, and fire-red hair, enrolls in Shohoku High, hoping to finally get a girlfriend and break his record of being rejected 50 consecutive times in middle school. His notoriety precedes him, however, leading to him being avoided by most students. Soon, after certain events, Hanamichi is left with two unwavering thoughts: “I hate basketball,” and “I desperately need a girlfriend.”

One day, a girl named Haruko Akagi approaches him without any knowledge of his troublemaking ways and asks him if he likes basketball. Hanamichi immediately falls head over heels in love with her, blurting out a fervent affirmative. She then leads him to the gymnasium, where she asks him if he can do a slam dunk. In an attempt to impress Haruko, he makes the leap, but overshoots, instead slamming his head straight into the blackboard. When Haruko informs the basketball team’s captain of Hanamichi’s near-inhuman physical capabilities, he slowly finds himself drawn into the camaraderie and competition of the sport he had previously held resentment for.

Availability

No ebook available, so I’ve put in extra effort track down more links for physical copies.

Physical copy (Tankoubon edition): Amazon, Manga Republic (used/new), Verasia (EU), Kinokuniya (USA)

I’ve nominated the original Tankoubon edition, but some people may be interested in opting for the (larger) Kanzenban edition. I own both and put in more details below to help you choose.

Physical copy (Kanzenban edition): Amazon, CDJapan, Manga Republic (used/new), Verasia (EU)

Additional notes about editions and ordering physical copies.

There are three editions:

  • Original 31 volumes Tankoubon (marked ジャンプコミックス ). I have this one and it’s great, pretty standard size manga.
  • 24 volume Kanzenban (完全) - the first chapter includes color spreads and it’s nicer overall. I switched to this one because it’s larger and the furigana is easier to read. It’s about 33% larger and has more chapters, but twice the cost (currently) compared with the other options.
  • 20 Shinsouban 新装再編版 - reviewers complain that the thick books are difficult to read and the paper too thin. I don’t recommend this one.

The above links are suppliers I know are generally popular and reliable. Verasia (EU): if a title is unavailable, click the button to be notified when in stock and they normally come around again with 1-2 weeks. You can also email them.

Personal Opinion

I have a Japanese friend who taught me some quotes from the manga series, and after looking into it, realised this is really well known as one of the THE most legendary manga ever. It would be a great asset in the book club archives and I’m pretty sure an offshoot would form to read the whole series (31). Flicking through my copy, the artwork is incredibly dynamic and really gets the intensity of the scenes across. The story includes great character development and reviewers are always really attached to them.

From @WaniTsunami 's original recommendation (moved from ABBC):
The dialogue is fun and the vocab is easy enough. You can enjoy it in it’s entirety without being a Japanese expert and the pacing feels good. Its also one of the greatest manga of all time by one of the best mangaka of all time… So a great motivator to keep reading and find high quality content with a low bar for entry.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Easy grammar and words.
  • Good pacing and encouraging if you feel you’re a slow reader.
  • Excellent characters that feel like real people.

Cons

  • Paper only, the author has expressed a wish that his work not be available digitally
  • For some readers, the lack of 100% furigana (see pictures to get a feel for it); this is very few of the kanji and they are easy to read. In the first chapter, for example: 中学, 年間, 人, 心, 自分, 思う, 赤い
  • Not sure if this is a con as I haven’t read many manga (so this might apply to all manga in this setting, lol) the boys use male speech contractions with each other. I found an article from Maggie Sensei that explains these and have already populated a spreadsheet with @prath (we put more effort into Ch 1) so I don’t think this is really an issue.

About 1/4 of the pages are mainly artwork with very little text. I included pages representative of the amount of text.

Not sure if I understood you incorrectly or the store just updated, but the jp store has the kindle version.

I have added the short story to the list of nominations, but I have a couple of things that I just now noticed:

if it is not the same then we should probably not list it as it would just cause confusion. How different are the two versions?

The second challenge with this short story is the length. It can probably be read in 1 week and that would be uncharted territory for this club. It might be a better idea to read the whole short story bundle “Japanese Stories for Language Learners”, but I’m open to discussion.

That is gonna be interesting if this wins. The last time this book club read a purely physical manga was Aria. To make it easier for people to source the manga it might be a good idea to add links to where to buy the other versions with a disclaimer

Couldn’t we just have two winners if it wins? Reading a bilingual graded reader (Japanese Stories for Language Learners) in a beginner book club feels a bit weird… (Although maybe I’m the only one thinking so - maybe we could add both versions to the poll.)

I don’t know your level so but I feel like I am a true “beginner”. I know N5 grammar, most of N4 and a bit of N3. I can read manga of Yotsuba level, and a bit harder if I’m OK to go very slowly. But long sentences are hard to approach and a real book feels intimidating, I don’t have yet the experience or the stamina to read many long sentences in a row. So based on that I don’t think it can be expected for the BBC to read it all in one week. I wouldn’t want that for sure.

Sorry I don’t own the book so I don’t know. I think it’s fair to mention that they are different, because if people own the book they might be confused when the reading start.

Ah, sorry I hadn’t checked myself, thanks, fixing that now.

Thanks for adding it to the list of nominations!

ah! I actually own this version so let me check. The intro to the book says it pulled the story from:
http://www.aozora.gr.jp/cards/000154/files/4947_16626.html

but it is way way different! Not entirely sure what’s going on there, it does also say this was downloaded in 2017, but I doubt it would’ve changed this drastically since then.

first page for comparison

Yeah for sure. It is designated as a short club so if this were to win the second place would also get picked.

Oh I did not know it was a bilingual version.

We usually schedule things based on the experience of works we have read in the past. The closest comparison would probably be the short stories of the 小川未明童話集・Ogawa Mimei: Collection of Children’s Stories club. The first story that was read in that club has about the 2/3 of characters as 雪女. So a two week club would probably the furthest it should be stretched.

If that is the case I would recommend removing the references to the bundled version all together. Maybe only leave it in a detail box with a disclaimer that the text is significantly different.
