Since you basically reset every item (apart from radicals), wouldn’t it be more practical to just reset your level to, say, 15?
Assuming you have good to decent retention of items up to level 15, this way you’ll be automatically spacing your review, dramatically reducing your immediate workload.
Moreover, you’re basically redoing these items specifically to improve your retention, not for speed, so you can easily spread out your levelling pace to a 10 day-14 day pace, leaving you with enough free time for reading, which should improve your retention even further.
There are ways to review already burned items, such as the Item Inspector and the Self-Study Quiz - OR using KameSame. So, it’s strictly not necessary to unburn any items to go through them and rebuild your connection to them.
For this challenge, I would probably have used WK for the unburned items, while using KameSame OR the Item Inspector for the burned items, with the main focus being on the unburned items, and occasional work on burned items as a side-quest.
I’m currently doing the latter, just to keep those items alive in my memory since anything that I haven’t encountered yet in the wild will have a shaky foundation for long-term retention.
My own subscription will run out in a couple of months as well.
I hope to get to around 80% burned items at which point I’ll consider WK done and over with. There is increasingly less point to use SRS after you reach 80-85% burned items. The reason being you’re increasingly facing leeches, which need a different approach than just SRS (or they wouldn’t be leeches).
In other words: you need other forms of input from SRS to build that real deep-rooted memorization. I find that only immersion do that.
So I would probably do what you’re doing - using WK for the SRS along with scripts like the Item Inspector - but shift more energy to just reading, listening, and watching stuff with no subs. Something that gives you a better sense of context for each item, so they stay in your memory for the long run.
I wish you good luck on your mountain climbing adventure! ^>^ You can do it!
How much Japanese did you consume during those 4 months you didn’t do WK?
Resurrecting items even before you were done with your current items. You madman. 6000 reviews with 3000 in apprentice with 40% accuracy is like a half a year project . You basically have 3/4 of the whole WK in your review pile.
Kids, this is why you don’t rush through WK and drop it immediately.
On the other hand, if I hadn’t resurrected all those items, I’d barely be getting anything right at all in the reviews.
Edit: On the bright side, I am getting some of the non-resurrected items right at least. And sometimes, there’s some that I almost got right which I think should have counted but got marked wrong by WK. For example, this morning, I guessed “honored guest” for 貴賓, “financing” for 資本 and “consciousness” for 覚, but they were marked wrong.
I know what you are going through man, i have been inactive for a while and i had to start again with 5050 reviews. been cutting away at it for a while doing mostly between 100 and 250 reviews a day and i have now cut about 1000 from my list.
I use a review reorder script and i’m just going from aprentice upwards. only about 300 guru2 items left then about 1700 master items and about 2050 up for burning. i started back in februari so the going is slow and steady, but i know ill get there eventually. it sure takes a long time. its almost like starting over. its sometimes very disheartning that ive forgotten so much but im not quitting anymore until im back at 0/0.
The wall is high but not insurmountable. keep it up bro.
to be exact. im currently at:
apprentice 248
Guru 715
Master 2106
enlightened 2063
Burned 1850
The difference between these numbers and the ones above is simply what is not yet up for new reviews right now.
still 5 more levels to go, but im not doing levels before i have atleast cut down 75% of this pile.
For cases like that I really like the “ignore answer” script. A lot of times I’ll type something but realize it’s wrong just as I hit enter, or I’ll type something that actually has the same meaning but I haven’t been able to add a synonym for it yet, so the ignore answer function lets you not count that one. Then it gives you another chance to either get it right or add a synonym.
Accuracy was up today, so that was nice. Hopefully that means I’m getting the hang of things.
I managed to burn 降参 pretty much just by guessing. Of course, there’s no way I could have guessed both the reading and meaning perfectly if I didn’t already mostly remember it. On the other hand, I was marked wrong on 鼻歌 due to putting “hum” instead of “humming”, so I guess it balances out.

Welcome back. I followed your race to level 60 (I was myself in the 50s back then). I am looking forward to see you post in https://community.wanikani.com/t/the-00-streak-challenge some day. The number of lessons should already be near zero (except for the few new items?) so there is not so much left to do .
Nope, I’m not using any scripts. Part of the reason for the low accuracy is that there’s a lot of high level items in there that I have almost no chance on.
it might be reasonable to use a re-order script and do these by level. SRS works by repeating stuff you don’t know well at shorter intervals. but if you’ve got a pile of items to review which is so much larger than what you can review in a single session, the items will almost never come back at short intervals. and then the SRS pretty much stops working.
or maybe use it to re-order so that it does items at a lower SRS stage first, that might work better.
I did great on my review session this morning, but terrible on the one in the afternoon (only 25%), so I guess it mostly evened up, though I’m still up in accuracy overall compared to previous days.
Fri May 14 2021:
Time spent: 37m
Reviews completed: 83
Reviews remaining: 6155
Accuracy: 49.40% (41/83)
Accuracy on previously burned items: 79.49%
Today’s the weekend, so I spent more time on reviews than usual. Unfortunately, I didn’t get through as many reviews as you’d expect proportionately. I had a worse accuracy and slower review speed than the previous two days.
Sat May 15 2021:
Time spent: 62m (1 hour and 2 minutes)
Reviews completed: 117
Reviews remaining: 6122
Accuracy: 44.44% (52/117)
Accuracy on previously burned items: 76.00% (38/50)
On my review session tonight, I only got 9%, although I was kind of unlucky. Also, I deserved to get 花見. I only missed it because I forgot that Wanikani specifically wants “cherry blossom viewing” for the meaning here and just wrote “flower viewing” instread. If that counted, I’d have gotten like 13% instead.
On some like that, I’ve just added the Japanese in romaji as a synonym. Like senpai and kouhai too. Although you can’t really use hanami for other types of flowers. I’ve tried asking native speakers what they call it instead and they don’t seem to have a specific word for the same action with other flowers lol.
I did the same with things like ougi and sensu. I mean they have things like Tsuzumi and Taiko as listed answers already so if I know the item I just add the synonym.
I do that sometimes as well, I just hadn’t happened to do it for that particular word.
Incidentally, in yesterday afternoon’s review session, I was asked for the reading of 平気 and 兵器 in consecutive questions. I know it’s probably just coincidence and that stuff like that will be bound to happen by chance if you do enough reviews, but I still find it amusing.
This morning, 抽象 came up for review again. It jumped out at me because I remember it being one of the first reviews when I started this challenge. Unfortunately, I couldn’t remember the answer, so I missed it once again. I was hoping that my accuracy rate would naturally go up over time because once I saw a word I didn’t know, I’d know what it was the next time it came up, but so far that doesn’t seem to be happening.
