My batch of lessons just now were just made so much easier because of my longstanding love of Sailor Moon.
I had 守る (mamoru - to protect), a word I know because it’s Darien’s Japanese name, and all the best fansites in the 90s told us what it meant.
Then I had the kanji 面 (men - face), which I already recognize from 面白い, but that was my only associated meaning… UNTIL I click over to the “examples” tab and see 仮面 … kamen (literally anti temporary*-face)… meaning Mask. TUXEDO KAMEN (aka Tuxedo Mask).
All the world is clear, and I love Sailor Moon even more. ~
And this ladies and gentlemen is how watching anime for 15-19 years with subs, or being a Moonie since '92, can help you learn kanji and Japanese. Don’t let anyone tell you you can’t. (It just takes a looong time. Eheh. ^^; )
*Thanks, Leebo!
