Hey everyone,

Im currently on level 17 and noticed my reviews are around 220-240 per day (is that normal?) i sit at a max cap of 20 lessons per day and im about 200 days in a row using the app so ive noticed alot older kanjis coming back into review to be burned or enlightened or going back to guru lol. I also feel frustrated when when i get the kanji wrong or feel like i have a chore to do every hour whenever 20 reviews pop up. Anyone else seem to be going through the same thing? i asked AI and it said to pull back on lessons to about 15 or even 10 alongside with reading Yotsuba. Just wondering from a human POV and also my ego wont let me drop down to 15 lessons so im looking for a second opinion.

The only way to get fewer reviews is to do fewer lessons. Definitely stop doing lessons if you’re overwhelmed. It’ll be a bigger hit to your ego if you quit Japanese forever because you got burnt out on Wanikani.

If you currently get 220-240, then I’d say prepare for 250-300 reviews a day a few months from now, for as long as you keep doing 20 lessons. Whether your personal review load is normal is irrelevant as you’re not competing against anyone. All that matters if you can sustain the work load.

The fact you’re posting here does indicate you’re starting to reach your limit, and a warning sign you’re approaching a burnout. You don’t have to feel excited to do your reviews, like you probably were at the start, but it starting to feel like a (never-ending) chore is a bad sign. Try to end the majority of the days with the feeling you have ‘gas left in the tank’, so to speak.

I personally did 20 daily lessons for a while to get a “Ten levels in a row, each within ten days.” achievement. I managed to do it, but I also realized I was starting to feel a twinge of dread every time I looked at the next days review load. That realization scared me, so already during level 10 I scaled back to 10 lessons per day.

I did something like 10-15 lessons a day for the first half. I think the first half, up to around ~L35, is the most necessary/helpful so it’s good to keep some kind of routine there. I started reading super early (like level 6) and so now I spend most of my time reading native material (novels etc) and only add new lessons on WK when I feel like it, since I already know a lot of kanji just from reading. For example, in the current level (48) I already knew 10-12 kanji so they were basically freebies.

Personally, I recommend slowing down WK a little bit and spending more time on grammar study and reading, you’ll get a lot of mileage out of that and it’s more rewarding than SRS.

You have to ask yourself why you’re doing WK. if it’s to learn to recognise kanji so you can read Japanese, then you should take as long as that process personally requires. There is no penalty for _not_ speedrunning WK. Let your ego take a hit if that’s what it takes.

Since you had a data question as part of your post:

Recovering speedrunner checking in to say the maximum daily reviews my _forecast_ ever showed me was probably about 350, and that wasn’t super frequently.

However, some days I did wind up breaking 400 or 450 (but I doubt ever 500) by doing multiple Apprentice reviews on a bunch of cards during the same day.
