So we had another “_Content update_” (great that you are working on those) and once again I was met with what-the-heck moment…

You changed `明` ([https://www.wanikani.com/kanji/明](https://www.wanikani.com/kanji/%E6%98%8E)) reading from `めい` to `あ` so when I got `明るい` ([https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/明るい](https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/%E6%98%8E%E3%82%8B%E3%81%84)) lesson today I was very confused when I read:

> Since this word has okurigana (hiragana attached to the kanji) you know that it’s probably going to be the kun’yomi reading. You already know the reading from the kanji!

Uhmmm so I though `めいかり`? but you know what? It’s not because the reading of taught kanji changed =,=

Would it be possible to add an **OPTION** to reset state of the kanji if you switch the reading or do any update on it? I know a lot of people probably don’t want it but right now with those changes is kinda schisophrenic =,=

Or add an option on the kanji page to reset progress so I can do it on my own if I deem needed.

I agree, and would also like it to be more obvious when a meaning changes too. Maybe add them back to lessons to review the update but then give the option to restart or keep current learning progress? Especially with kanji that has already been burned.

Maybe they should list Kun’yomi or On’yomi on the Kanji item.
It’s a bit odd that WK requires specifically On or Kun and from the kanji item you can’t tell which reading they want. Especially when they are in the habit of changing this regularly and don’t emphasize this during the lesson.

It’s even worse when the kanji is on Kunyomi then the vocabulary is the exact same reading and meaning

Great! and how do I check the item page? I only remember this meaning beause it was taught. I can try to search the page view main page or enter wrong answer to see the item page in-line… 😕

this handling is terrible… in this case the pop-up should give the link directly!

Or better yet… just add option to reset updated items with the information that it was change and has to be re-studied…

I haven’t seen the updated form myself yet. Good to know it changed.

I’d hate to be in your situation. Cause your options here are:

1. Try/hope to guess it.

2. Answer it wrongly and afterwards check the correct meaning.

3. Abruptly stop your reviews, mess up other words SRS if you made mistakes on other words in your review session, and check the meaning.

</div>

Yeah if they’re not going to be consistent with sticking to onyomi or kunyomi when teaching solo kanji, it should be made clearer in the lesson and the review which one they want. I would prefer they stick to onyomi for kanji since a lot later on only have onyomi anyway. Then all the kunyomi can be learned through vocab. I understand they’re choosing frequent/useful readings over predictably for the user but the process is more frustrating than it needs to be.

If I understand your question correctly, you can see the item’s details by typing the letter “F” . I’m not sure if the answer you typed is considered wrong or just worthy of the warning message. … curious to know what happens here.

Only works after a wrong answer, not for words on the ‘warning’ list.

You can however just look the word up in a new browser tab. WK has no issues with having multiple tabs open.
I often look up radical meanings because I don’t really care about those. Also A1-3 Kanji, if I didn’t have time to drill them yet, to keep making progress. As with all cheating: you have to be careful not to cheat yourself though.

As @KanjiOzeki mentioned - you can’t use `F`/`E` unless you are pass the “type the answer” stage so the only way is too look it up in different tab, which is somewhat inconvenient but then again - you are expected different answer than the one already drilled in your head so it still requires re-learning hence resetting the progress (as an option!) would be very convenient in this case…

I’ve never had this happen before. It seems unnecessarily harsh treatment for an answer that is not actually wrong. SMH… unless it’s about the transitive/intransitive translation.

Hey @wojtek👋

Thanks so much for taking the time to write all this out — these are really legit frustrations, and your examples help a lot in understanding where the current handling falls short.

You’re right it can be confusing when an item’s meaning or reading changes, but we don’t give an easy way to check what’s changed or to review the item again. Having to search or purposely get something wrong just to see the updated page definitely isn’t a great experience 😅

We’ve talked internally about improving how “content updates” are surfaced, and your suggestions —

- adding an option to reset or restudy updated items

- adding a direct link from the pop-up to the item page

are both excellent ideas. I agree that they’d make it much easier for users to understand changes and decide if they need to review the item again.

I’ll bring this up with the product/content team so we can explore these improvements to future updates. Thanks again for flagging this so clearly, and sorry again for your frustration.

Seems like specifically this change for [明](https://www.wanikani.com/kanji/%E6%98%8E) to have the kun’yomis as the default reading has been controversial. I don’t recall any of the other recent reading or meaning content update changes causing this much consternation among users.

Yes, I have to check it because I have no clue what YOU changed it to this time around. There is no easy way to do so so I have to open another tab, copy-paste-search the kanji to check what the darn change was…

And then if I feel like it would be nice to re-learn new-shiny-updated meaning there is no way because `[RESSURECT]` (reset) button is only available for burned items 😕

I second this – being able to :

- see a revision history (so you don’t feel confused or “Mandela Effect”) when things suddenly seamlessly transform under the hood’
- reset item’s SRS (or re-lock it) - especially if they were bumped to higher levels or their component radicals were changed - seems critical to me

In my eyes the the main disruption comes from the lack of these two, not from the change itself

bump!

Again things changed ( [https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/今年](https://www.wanikani.com/vocabulary/%E4%BB%8A%E5%B9%B4) ) and I was looking for an option to reset the state because what I learned doesn’t match what is required:

> The reading for 今年 (ことし) is kinda weird, what with the こ part and all. Just imagine the こん reading you learned for 今 has been shortened to こ here, if that helps. Then the 年 part uses its kun’yomi reading とし. It’s an odd combo, so here’s a mnemonic:
>
> Your goal this year is to treat everyone with courtesy (ことし). You’re going to be nice and polite to everyone this year, even on social media. After all, there’s too much negativity in the world right now. Oh yes, no doubt about it — this year will be one of courtesy.

but after searching for a button in “Progression section” (I though there was one!) I figured out that you can only ressurect burned itemns and there is no option to reset progress of other items, which is a huge bummer when reading changes completely 😕
