Howdy, everyone! I’m trying to create an account for Rakuten but it doesn’t seem to accept my phone number format (I live in Brazil)… do you know if only Japanese phone numbers are permitted? Thanks!

Hey, welcome! I haven’t used Kobo myself so I’m not sure  I think @ChristopherFritz uses Kobo, do you know if a Japanese number needs to be used?

Thanks! Actually I don’t have Kobo either, I thought Rakuten ebooks could also be read on computer. Guess I’ll try BookWalker then.

Kobo is Rakuten’s electronic book site.

You can see on this physical book listing here, the link for the electronic version says Kobo:

Rakuten does require a Japanese phone number and address to be able to purchase even an electronic book.

I used a web site that generates a fake Japanese phone number and address, then I stored those in my password manager app so I have them available if I ever need them.

I finally managed to grab my digital copy! I got help from a more tech savy person who helped me with the vpn  But boy, do I wish future books will be more easy to come by

Now I’m hyyyyyyyyped! Can’t wait for when we finally start

Good effort! If it makes you feel better, most books don’t have this region restriction and it’s easy to buy on Bookwalker outside of Japan without a VPN.

This was a really really REALLY good tip. I used Tunnelbear to buy my copy, and worked like a charm.
Thanks Soggy.

My only fear right now is that my digital library is growing up and I don’t know what will happen if Bookwalker gets out of business or something like that.

I bought this book and the Doraemon both on Amazon Japan. No VPN was needed, only a fake japanese address. It might be a good alternative

We’ll all be right there with you if Bookwalker goes down  I have sooo many books on there.

How everyone here feels about… piracy? :eyes:

Authors are trying to make a living, like everyone else. They deserve fair compensation for their work.
Also, we don’t want to turn this forum into a place where piracy is openly promoted/supported, lest we cause legal problems for the platform.

Sharing links to pirated content and discussing how to get pirated content is against the forum’s rules, so we can’t discuss that here. What you do in your own time is up to you though. I buy my digital content legally since the conversion rate is in my favor (American) and it’s pretty cheap.

Sorry everyone, did not mean to cause problems to the platform!

I bought this book without knowing that it will be read Here. I already tried to read the First Page. Is this book too difficult for someone who is learning Japanese for only four month?

Hey there!

Looking at your study log, I can see that you’re using Genki to learn grammar. How many chapters have you read so far?

I recommend carefully reading this post by ChristopherFritz on what you should expect from your first time reading.

The gist of it is that you should definitely learn some grammar before trying to read, but no matter when you start reading, it will be very difficult. Once the club starts, there will be lots of us there to help you, though!

I learned Grammar with Japanese from Zero until Volume 3 Chapter 10. At the Moment I’m taking a Break from learning Grammar and concentrating on learning vocabulary because Grammar became too exhausting and I know too few words.

I’m Reading Genki 1 and watching the Videos by Tokini Andy to find Out If there are Things I haven’t learned yet with Japanese from Zero. I have already read Chapter 1 - 3.

Ok, the grammar you learned in Japanese from Zero should be enough to start. If it’s too overwhelming by yourself, then you can also wait until the club starts and ask as many questions as you need to. Even if you need to ask a question about every single sentence, that’s ok!

There will also be a vocabulary sheet so you won’t need to look up every word on your own.
