I decided to use the same format from last challenge. I think it works well for me and I like how visual it is. I forget when, but sometime in 2025, I picked up 教養366 and I decided to read it daily from today.
I skipped the fall 2025 challenge and my record on the summer one was quite spotty. Aiming to read more regularly this time around. I’d also like to tackle more various media so I’ll be including manga, jdoramas, novels, games and anime. I’m gonna be ambitious and set goals I likely will not be able to meet, it’s all about the journey, am I right?
Goals
Manga - 14/20
Jdorama - 0/3
VN game - 0/1
Novel - 0/1
Anime - 0/1
I have just over a 2 year streak of reading every day, so I’ve not popped into this challenge before, but I have been falling off on my manga reading lately. I’d like to read a chapter a day (as long as they’re the types of manga with 10-30 page chapters; I’ll count 20+ pages in any manga with longer chapters).
= read manga = read a chapter* of manga = read a chapter* of physical manga
First day of the reading challenge! Also happy new year everyone
Today’s reading: 安達としまむら 第2巻 - 10 pages.
Today was a fairly slow day since my brain hasn’t been focusing too well this past week. I think that’ll improve as I continue the challenge though.
Edit: I also watched the first episode of はたらく細胞 this evening which I’m counting here since I was reading subtitles the whole time, plus there were quite a few pop-ups on screen I had to pause to read. It was very difficult but really interesting!
I am enjoying the reading but also enjoying seeing how everyone posts their progress and trying to figure out how this conversation works. Realised that day count is redundant so will mean how many graded readers I’ve finished and means I finished that reader in this session. I read to myself out loud in the car after the gym; that felt good, I think while I’m at this level I’ll keep doing that. So, we just keep replying and replying until… until we reach nirvana or something, presumably?
One more vol of こういうがいい to get up to date. Lots of easy pages then running into a brick wall of lookups because a character starts ranting to themselves in their head.
Day 1:
I was able to put an hour in this afternoon and got from the beginning through the end of the week 4 mark from the ABBC club (pg 41, 43 in Bookwalker). Which is probably 5-10 pages further than I got in all the time I spent on this previously. This one might not take me as long as I initially thought and I am here for that!
Alright, time to step up with my reading. My main goal is to go through the tadoku lvl 0 and 1 graded readers, continue with the ABBC, continue with the other manga I’m reading, and Satori.
I’m going to aim for January and February, and If I feel confident continue into March.
First day of reading in 2026 done!
1/1 - As planned, I read the first page of ホビットの冒険, which took me a full 25 minutes… No furigana is a beast! I also did the first of my hiragana crosswords, which was a bit too easy…
Finally, I finished 図書室の怪談, though I’m counting it as a book read in 2025, since I was around 60% through it already (Book #80 for last year, with that including English, Spanish, and Japanese books). I won’t spoil it, since the Children’s Book Club (📚 😈 Home Thread for Ghost Story in the Library / 図書室の怪談 || Children's Novel Club) is still reading, but I really enjoyed this book! I’ll definitely be getting the next one in the series at some point!
Getting started with the year of the novel! Flesh & Blood is going to be my challenge read for a while. At L35 on Natively () It’s pretty slow to get through (I only read 6 pages with text, got a few freebies at the beginning of the book), so it was nice to combine it with the speedier 夜警 where I was able to read a whole chapter in no time Now I’m going to get in bed and read a different book, but that’s going to have to go in tomorrow’s update so as not to disturb my routine
Read the 5 sentence paragraph at the bottom of day 1 of my new Hobonichi planner. It’s not much, but it’s a start! I suppose reading back my journaling for the day counts too (:
First day complete! Read a little on my lunch break, then more once I got home. I don’t think reading body horror while eating is the best idea, though…
I’ll probably delve into the book club discussion because there’s some stuff I’m unclear on, but I’m happy with this as a start! Now, to catch up on my reviews…
