📚📚 Read Japanese Every Day Challenge - Winter 2026 🌅🔔

Wow thanks a lot for bringing this title up! I had the manga in shortlist of what I want to look into (that is not even necessarily in JP) but completely missed that it is based on a novel. And considering that I was thinking about picking up 三日間の幸福 for reading, this looks to be quite a bit easier while having similar “type” of story.

I read the manga first as a preparation, but you can definitely skip that. I was just over-prepping because of my first failure. There’s an audiobook available too.

I will try the novel first, if it proves to be difficult manga can be a backup option. Once more thanks for bringing it up !

Day 11:
Read the third chapter of からかい上手の高木さん, will continue onward.

Oh man I wish! I can only ever hope to read as much as 先輩 someday :woman_bowing: haha

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone!

I’m really enjoying it! I wasn’t super hooked at first, but by volume 3 it had really captured me.

I didn’t read as much as I thought I would this weekend, but that was primarily because I ended up marathoning Detective Conan anime eps. :stuck_out_tongue: I did read my one page of the Hobbit each day, though. I also went through the Week 2 material for the FF2 ‘book club’ on Jan. 10, and read 2 chapters of Detective Conan V25 today, Jan. 11.

NANA 3
第5話
第6話
Decided to continue with NANA in between novels as part of my 積読 goals for 2026 (i.e. finish 2 manga series sitting on my bookshelf). Might even manage to catch up to the bookclub - don’t know what volume they’re on presently but there’s a total of 21 in the series. I’m not going to read them all at once, but maybe do 2-3 in a row, then read a novel.

Tried to give Beast Complex a Chance since it’s free on BookWalker right now, but it was really hard to read the smaller Kanji. So instead I went on and read the stuff I already have, which is the wiser choice anyway.

Did one of the practice JLPT 5 exams on Bunpro. It went great, so I think next week I might try the JLPT 4 one. Guess that counts in one way or another.

Title Type Progress
:microphone: 【推しの子】1 Manga (digital) 1 → 91/220 pg
:green_heart: 気になってる人が男じゃなかった VOL.3 Manga (physical) 1 → 61/176 pg

Two new manga today bc I cannot help myself  きにおと is at least part of my tsundoku.. but I also got tempted into reading 推しの子 with the Speed run club. Ah well, manga reading is manga reading I suppose.

Status name type pages read time
:sparkles: 夜の名前を呼んで1 manga 3 → 20 40min
:shield: ポケットモンスターシールド video game 28min

Sat down to have another attempt at Pokemon when I got home and I was waaay too tired for that. Weirdly, I feel like the game loves using kanji I don’t know but spelling out kanji I do know in furigana… heh. Gonna need to approach that one when I have more energy to do phone lookups, or perhaps check out one of the newer ones that has furigana.

This evening I started reading the sample on Bookwalker and already I’m smitten with the art, the magical night vibe, and the poetic language!!! The language feels a little above my level right now, but I feel motivated to keep at it. Will probably pick this up once I finish one of the others I’m already reading.

On another note, this is my first time doing this challenge and I’m finding it really lovely reading everyone’s posts and hearing about how their reading is going. I’d be lying if I said I’d thought I’d read every post in here, but I have been and it’s been a joy!

WK Level 15 :white_check_mark: 12/1/2026 :open_book: 日本の城 :check_mark: これは何でしょう? :hash: 12 :high_voltage:12

I love reading books like これは何でしょう? because they teach precisely the things missing from Wanikani such as こたつ or ふろしき as well as what it’s used for. Also I tried reading a L1 book from Smith College and found a spelling error..: さなか rather than さかな… which put me off wanting to use student-written material. Which answers my earlier question: I will finish Tadoku free books L1 then go ahead with L2.

Actually I remembered the plot as I had once read the first chapter… but peeking at Vol.2 first pages is a big spoiler… (and Natively Spoiler tag is broken too).

January 9
More 英雄伝説 碧の軌跡, more boring quests. Trails from Zero also had lots of quests but they were more interesting imho. I asked AI how many quests Trails to Cold Steel 3 has and I got the answer 100. That would be twice as much as Trails to Azure. Next Legend of Heroes game I may just ignore quests and only go for the main story.

ひぐらしのなく頃に 第一話 鬼隠し編 上: 57-66
Despite preparing the vocab and kanji in full comprehension of the action was a bit blurry.
I hope it’ll be better when rereading the same passage in VN form during the next readathon.
