Also read/skimmed a couple articles on the expression 「立てば芍薬、座れば牡丹、歩く姿は百合の花」 whose first half appeared in 放課後質屋 (a furisode was patterned with those two types of peony, and Ibuki assumes that expression is why)
Also he’s pretty chill about the 二人羽織 for a guy who doesn’t want to wear it not only because he thinks it’s cursed and will kill him (apparently if his arms don’t go through the sleeves, it doesn’t count) but also because it’s women’s wear (if his arms don’t go through the sleeves, it doesn’t count??)

Damn, I was hoping to use Solar Flair to quickly wipe out darkonium slimes, but it seems it counts as a spell despite being listed under abilities :(
So if you decide to fight Corvus again, you’re essentially sent back in time to just before you face his final form, and then you get the entire ending cutscene + credits + post-credits scene again afterwards. I’ll just stick to grotto bosses, thanks. He’s worth the same amount of EXP as Sir Sanguinus, and even if Corvus is easier (he still didn’t use Magic Burst. Disruptive Wave, either, despite that I used Life Fource. I didn’t keep track of how many rounds it took, but we didn’t even have to heal at all), the grotto is less trouble. They shoulda just sent you back to Celestria instead. I mean, they still do, but only after all that.
I think once I can beat Atlas I should be able to take on Baramos, since his starting attributes are similar, and he also doesn’t learn Disruptive Wave for a few levels. (Not, ofc, that I have Baramos’s map yet. I gotta look up which quest rewards it.) I got my ass handed to me last time, so I might still have a ways to go, but I should challenge Atlas soon anyway, since the story quest I picked up today requires that I beat a けだかき (Silver) map, and currently I only have two (both passed over from my original copy), and between Atlas and Fowleye, I’m much more likely to be able to beat Atlas.
read sections 2 and 3 a couple times yesterday, and read section 4 today. now that the book has started the wheels-within-wheels plot ticking, it’s really fun. given how he is later in the anime, i’m surprised (but not upset at all) that 綾小路 really is not a Mary Sue…
Light reading today. Hoping to be back to a normal reading schedule starting Monday. Currently sitting at 50.6% of the way to my yearly reading goal, whereas I should be at 50.9%.

怪盗レッド ch 2, 20 pages on bookwalker. Mostly easy but I lost track of what they’re doing at the end of the chapter. Asuka and Kei ask their dads about why they’re being made phantom thieves and the dads explain that they’re stealing for justice. Asuka jumps off a building at the end of the chapter and lands fine because she has good balance.
Out of those days, I would only count Saturday as a good reading day with 50 pages of Nausicaä. Tomorrow evening, I’m leaving for summer vacation and would like to finish Nausicaä before then, but we’ll have to see if I can make enough time for that
Stayed home from work today becaue I felt a bit off, but I’m feeling better this evening. I’d hesitate to say that I got meaningful rest given the amount of puppy chaos I had to deal with, but in the end it all worked out and I at least got a decent chunk of studying in.
In the Spring challenge I started reading a physical manga I own that I’ve read before in English. I decided to try reading it without doing any lookups whatsoever and was kinda surprised at how well I did. I read some more of that today, but did allow myself to do a few lookups this time. It went well! Certainly puzzled a few things out through context, but knew quite a lot of it as well.
愛でたいセンセイ is a fluffy adult yuri about a P.E. teacher who falls for a new teacher at the high school she teaches at. I remember the general plot but realized today that I’ve forgotten quite a few of the details, which is nice to add a bit more challenge. In any case the second volume was just released today, so I think I’ll keep working through this one as a break from more intense reads.
I also read the latest volume of Pink Candy Kiss in English, which ended on a massive cliffhanger. Gahhh guess I need to read it in Japanese so I can get to the two volumes ahead of the English release…

asdfghjkl after you defeat a legacy boss, they get back up and look at you with puppydog eyes, wanting the EXP you got from defeating them, and if you refuse, they leave all dejectedly. Anyway, the quest that rewards Baramos’s map is actually one that I picked up yesterday, so I completed that, defeated Atlas without too much trouble (no doubt thanks to all the MKSs in this grotto. Terry’s now lv 90!), then went to fight Baramos. I beat him in 7 turns, but only because I got lucky. My second attempt didn’t go quite so well.
7 for 7 so far, and luckily it hasn’t gotten any closer than Terry dying twice because Milly isn’t guaranteed to go first in order to heal him. With バーハ, his breath attack isn’t as much of a concern, but his crits still hurt. I don’t wanna give Terry the shield scroll, because if Baramos crits against Milly on a turn where he can’t use Forbearance, we’re screwed. I’m definitely not leveling him up until I’ve gotten a silver orb from him, and probably also not for a while afterwards either. I’m going to need so many seeds if I ever want to challenge them at higher levels…
I finally got a pair of depressing shoes (lucky grotto chest find), and not only did I already complete the triply cursed quest (I found not one but three [3] whole ruinous shields yesterday), but it turns out they’re not even cursed! Just like the unhappy hat, they only seem like they should be.

Another great story by Satori Reader! It’s really mysterious and encouraging me to read more. I clicked on a few words but I was pleased to find I didn’t need to translate a single sentence.
Small rant about WK’s kunyomi mnemonics
Don’t get me wrong, I love Wanikani and it has taught me more kanji than any other method I have ever tried and it is working and I will finish all 60 levels. But what drives me bonkers are some of the kunyomi mnemonics. E.G. for 珍. The onyomi mnemonic is great. The king has a hat made of hair - how rare! And it has his chin on it too (チン). Perfect. I will never forget that image.
But the kunyomi reading mezura in 珍しい… the mnemonic is “you know what’s rare? People who pronounce measurable as mezurable” or something stupid like that.
When I see 珍しい my brain remembers the story: king, hat, hair. Then my brain translates it to “Rare-shii”. So for me personally I already have the King’s chin hat burned in my memory, so why not attach the kunyomi to that? I have no trouble separating the two. Brains work non-linearly. So for me, the king wears his rare hat on his チン actually, and he needed to hire a measurer (めずら) to ensure it fit perfectly. Boom. One story, both readings.
I can’t be the only one who feels like this would work better in general. I’ve written my own mnemonics for countless kunyomi readings to tie them in with the original story for the kanji. Makes way more sense for me. Rant over!
8 pages of ふらいんぐうぃっち 1 to finish up chapter 4 today. Just two chapters left now! Plus today I started to put a little bit of time aside for some daily grammar study as well. It’s nice to go over notes I made a few months ago before I had really got going with immersion and start to recognise things popping up in the reading now
