Daily reading done ![]()
Managed to read 2 chapters even after a very long day at work. This story has long and complicated sentences where I don’t fully grasp all the grammar. That makes me wonder how it’s in the “easier” section of Satori and also makes me wonder what’s in store for me in the “harder” section. But I’ll figure that out when it happens
it’s like anything. Hard stuff seems hard when you’re a beginner, but then soon when intermediate stuff becomes easy, hard stuff seems more like… fun.

Artworks
鎌倉 稲村ヶ埼 (1955)
Something about the colours of this one make it feel lonely even though the image is populated with what looks to be a family. In 1955 Kasamatsu lost his second son, who was only 20 years old, the book says it had a huge impact on him making him turn inward and do nothing but produce prints (which explains his rapid output of works in 1955 - his style was slowly changing through the 50s but 1955 does seem to be a turning point of going forward with a simpler style). I can’t help but feel that this print may be a reflection of his emotions, like painting a memory of his son - only me speculating as it looks like the family is two women and a child, but there’s something really longing-feeling and lonely about this print.
日本橋 (1956)
I feel it is an ukiyo-e artist’s right of passage to draw the 日本橋, with this one being post-war compared to Kawase’s pre-war, you can see the modern buildings starting to pop up around the bridge.
It’s interesting how ukiyo-e has captured this bridge, I think Hiroshige and Hokusai both did a print of it when it was a simple wooden bridge (or maybe just one of them did, I can’t quite remember, but I know some other artists did draw the old wooden one), Kawase did one of the ‘new’ stone bridge (new for the 1930s at least) influenced by Western architecture, and Kasamatsu did a depiction of it post-WWII during Japan’s rapid urbanisation. I wonder if there’s an even more modern one closer to the millennium with it now completely surrounded by modern towers ![]()
東京駅 (1956)
I love how haunting this one is. The tone is so sombre. You’d expect somewhere like Tokyo station to be packed and bustling with life, but here it is with bare trees and a single couple, a mother and child, the only life in the print. Again, I wonder how much of this was Kasamatsu expressing his loss.
濠ばたの春雨 (1956)
Another print with quite gloomy-fellings. I like the juxtaposition of the old Japan (the stone wall and tree) being in the foreground with the new Japan (the tall buildings) looming in the distance. I like the swans too.
夢遊病者の死
Complete!
That seemed to take a bit of a left turn at the end ![]()

Tiny read surely it can’t go bad can it ?
ありがとうございます
87->100% I’m done~
This whole concept is very enjoyable as a short story collection (compared to vol 1 where the entire thing was one case), it’s just the right amount of working a brain with listening to deductions (inductions?) and getting to be done with a case in one or two evenings.
Still couldn’t have done it without audiobook, but 6/7 books in the series have one so maybe by the time I reach the last one my Japanese will be better?
If not I can wait. Trying too hard and suffering in process is for my work, not for my hobby ![]()

Halfway through the final chapter of ふらいんぐうぃっち 2 tonight. This time I went through one page at a time with no look ups and then went back over the same page for the unknown words and it seemed to work well as a way of pushing myself to really study the words. I’d like to have done the entire chapter but I’m way too slow for that and don’t want to be up all night! Maybe save that for the weekend ![]()
There were some wonderful illustrations of Chito the cat in this one, just absolutely fed up the entire time
Here she is being very helpful on the bus!
Every single one felt like a gift.
My rule of thumb is that I read a whole chapter without lookups, then I go back and work my way through but stop after I’ve encountered ten items I have to look up. In studying to be a language teacher I learned that 10 new vocab items is about what a human brain can handle.
Today: finished Vol. 8 of よつばと.
Will start again tomorrow with lookups.

・ドラクエ・ビルダーズ2「破壊神シドーとからっぽの島」
Steam’s got DQB2 on sale currently, so I grabbed the full version. I also finally figured out how to change the game language! They really don’t make it easy. (Properties > set Launch Option to Launch Configuration > launch > change language > Properties > set Launch Option to Play [Game].) Of course, I can’t play Tristan in JP since トリスタン is one character too many and there really isn’t anything I can shorten it to, so I named my builder Polaris, which is the name I’m considering for the new character I’ll replace OG Shion with in DQIX.
So the 5th I spent a good deal of time playing that and got a third of the way through the first mission (and I forgot how many words I gotta look up in this, sheesh) on Furrowfield. But the 3rd and 4th I actually only read a tiny bit, and most of my time I spent watching a show or movies while crocheting a case for my loose DS cartridges which I plan to put the emblem of Loto on. Except the only time I’ve made it before it was a lot smaller, so I’m gonna have to try and adapt the pattern. Hopefully I can… I mean, it should look fine without it, but it’ll look nicer with it. Even though I’m not using the right colors.

Today was a wildly exhausting days on multiple levels. Felt like I was context and code switching constantly all day; that’s pretty typical for me anyway but today was super intense. On top of that, I forgot my tablet at home so I didn’t do my usual lunchtime read, and didn’t have much left in me these evening to really focus in. Still managed to read a few pages today, though.
I did finally get the September issue of Yuri Hime, so that’s something to look forward to. Also, I forgot that I wanted to share this page from the read yesterday, so here it is!
That’s interesting! I feel like I’m learning lots of good study tips from you, thank you! ![]()

And with this the third chapter (out of eight) is completed ! At the start of the challenge I was at the last subsection of the previous chapter (page 79)… we’ve been zooming through this !
(Picture a guy running in slowmo
)
It took more than a year to go through those first 79 pages so I am pretty happy with how speed is increasing.
Content wise there is still about 480 kanjis and 5500 unknown words according to the jpdb prebuilt deck… still a lot to munch through !

After a long time I finally solved the The Masquerade Lullaby case. I thought it would never end. I enjoyed the graphics overhaul and the higher quality music. The solution of the case was some high level trolling. I guessed the murder right, which is no surprise if you pay attention to what people say and what happens it’s not hard to figure it out. If you play many detective games from a series, they become predictable. What I didn’t like they wanted the player to feel sympathy for the murderer. I don’t care what kind of difficult childhood someone had it doesn’t give them the right to murder people.
Now that this case is closed it’s time to start the next case. There are still two more cases left on card.
