I finished up Meshi 2 last night. It majorly felt like it dropped in difficulty. I’m enjoying the manga nearly as much as the anime. I feel like the anime did a great job at converting the medium well. I hope I can find more vols beyond 5 for cheap… Maybe in Kobe next week.
Other than that, I read Mushishi with the club and worked on back filling more vocab for JoJo!

Decided to make edge progress instead of a reread and what a blast ! Read through 3 subsections (although the last one was a bit much, I really had to push for the last 3 pages). But this session confirm for me that I can nearly separate reading and mining as long as the average unknown count is at most 1 term per sentence. Unlike previous attempts this was still enjoyable enough reading (but I still enjoy rereadings way more… not having to pull the dictionary is so much better for the flow…). I guess I could “finish” the book this year… I just wouldn’t be able to digest it at the same speed ^_^".

Stopping in the middle of a chapter because my choice is either to go to sleep or to get a migraine. Body, why?
But I managed to read (while listening) during my long(er) Tuesday commute without any expectations as to how much I’ll read. That’s a step into the right direction.

I second this recommendation. Reading through once without looking up anything really piques my curiosity and drives me to try to figure out new vocab, and familiar words sometimes work themselves out through context. It’s also so much more fun!
Took 3 days to finish Chap. 54 of よつばと; a lot of new vocab here so I look forward to going back with a fine-tooth comb.

I’m a bit late joining this round. So much has happened the past few months, I couldn’t keep going. Last month I didn’t read much, but it wasn’t zero. So now I’m joining again in an attempt to get out of this rut and get back on my feet 
In case anyone is wondering about Maru the book loving snake, I’ll attempt to post about his progress at the end of August.

Finished another chapter of ふらいんぐうぃっち 2 this evening. I tried a lot harder to not go overboard with the look ups this time even though the urge to fall back on that now is strong. When I knew I had seen a word before but I couldn’t quite remember the meaning I tried to rely more on the context of the images and surrounding words to understand it and I think I did alright in the end. I have luckily watched the Flying Witch anime (though in Japanese with Japanese subs) so that probably helped guide me as well. It will be interesting to try reading something I’m less familiar with one day!
Anywho, I definitely feel better about this reading session than yesterdays even though I probably came away understanding less haha!
Yes! I definitely felt more engaged today when deliberately stopping myself from looking up words I know I’d seen before. Part of the reason I got interested in learning Japanese is because I thought trying to work out a completely foreign script would feel like a big puzzle and this approach feeds right into that feeling 
Migraines are horrid, I hope you feel better after some rest!

I’m glad that this is a place where you can feel comfortable and share, but I recommend not posting publicly about such things? Regardless of the likelihood of them going after you for it, I think it’s a good rule of thumb

Yeah, thankfully I just learned 太陽系 in WK, but I did have to look up 惑星 for example (I was like, what could a misguided star / planet be…? 笑 indeed). Doable so far though! I didn’t even realize there was an anime!
I hadn’t either total chance that I saw a post about it! Just glancing at the ancient scroll (wikipedia) seems like it has sort of an uneven publishing history in english, so that may be why.

Picked up another new series, 今夜、エーテルで待ち合わせ; this one just came out a few weeks ago and only has one chapter out so far. It’s kinda pure fluff; a girl who prefers being alone is a hardcore solo MMORPG gamer but meets a lvl 1 girl in game and a rare friendship (or more???) starts. This one has a lot of kanji that I know and some familiar loan words, so reading went pretty smoothly. It’s a real toss up as to what the plot will actually be about in the long run, but it’s easy enough and cute enough that I’m happy to keep up with it.
It occurred to me while reading that I’m reading more directly now. Instead of like reading up to a particle, stopping to think, “ok what does this do in the sentence?”, and then moving to the next segment, I’m just kinda… taking it all in as I go and then going back for clarification if something didn’t make sense? Or.. something like that? Idk, it feels like there’s this active translation layer that’s not really happening as much anymore and I’m more directly engaged with the text. It’s a really nice feeling of progress!!!
I plan to finish up 愛でたいセンセイ and read the remaining 2 chapters of 月はタピオカみたいに next. @Kami_Neko and I might have a mini book club together starting Saturday to read はなにあらし２ since we’re at the same place in the series, so that’ll be really fun too!!!
