愛でたいセンセイ１は読み終わった！
Apparently my readathon was today or something, 'cause I read 66 pages and finished the volume of 愛でたいセンセイ! My stomach hurt pretty much all day, so honestly reading was helping keep my mind off it, at least when the dogs weren’t demanding my attention.
This completion is my first physical volume of manga read!!! I think it was a nice experiment to try to limit the amount of time spent looking up vocab, and I learned a lot actually. I have the second volume digitally so I’ll be switching back to that format, but I’m really proud of just how much I didn’t have to look up for this series!! I’m learning or something!!!
Oh, and I finally hit WK level 17! Going to try to keep up my recent cadence of lessons so that I can keep moving up the ranks. Need more kanji!!
Sometimes I have to make myself go look at just how many kanji and vocab words I’ve learned because I see other people’s progress or think about how far I am from level 60. I mean, I’m “just” level 17 and already know all of N5, N4, and half of N3 kanji with over 500 kanji! Go us!

These few of the late 40s are some of the last he did purely in the Shin Hanga style, he would go back to the style for a few prints but going into the 50s his style became increasingly influenced by 50s expressionism.

Post-WWII both Yoshida and Kawase stated that they had started to feel that they had lost interest in drawing scenes from around Japan due to the loss of the old Japan from the destruction of the war and the mass urbanisation that followed. Kasamatsu would continue doing 風景 scenes throughout the 50s of this new Japan that was developing, the book states, that for this reason, this print of the Pagoda at Ueno could be considered the last of the Shin Hanga 風景 of old Japan.
雨乞の松 湯田中温泉 (1950)
This one feels very Kawase-inspired, in subject, style and colouration - it was also the last print that Kasamatsu would have done with the Watanabe workshop before he moved to a different printer. So I wonder if it was a bit of a tribute - I mean, Kawase and Kasamatsu were friends after all.
I will start another story tomorrow.

Read most of the Shrike chapter of まいにち鳥びより this evening (just left the final few pages that don’t have furigana because it’s too much to attempt tonight 
).
I learnt from today’s chapter that there’s an old farming proverb that says when you hear the call of the shrike in autumn, 75 days later frost will arrive. This led me to search up the call of a bull-headed shrike, which in turn led me to videos of shrikes impaling small rodents and insects on thorns. The author, Tobita Hajime, somehow managed to showcase an incredibly brutal hunter in a much more family friendly kinda style than the reality haha
I’m enamoured with how he draws grasshoppers!

Not sure when I did all this reading but somehow I finished chapter 15 just now. Managed to read three chapters between yesterday morning and now which is good! It’s a sweet story so far and the vocab about homes and food and renting seems very useful.

Jumped right into 愛でたいセンセイ２ and had a really pleasant lunch break read of the first chapter. I’m doing my full digital read of this volume on my tablet, so easy lookups enabled now. Regardless, this series is so lovely to read in terms of difficulty and story enjoyability. In some ways it’s a very straightforward story, but I feel that it takes some smart choices in terms of pacing and structure that avoid some of the common pitfalls of the yuri genre. The romance isn’t needlessly drawn out, and the growth of their relationship unfolds naturally as they learn to understand the value and passion they each have in being a teacher. Love this work and I’m loving reading it in its native form!!!
Tomorrow is (hopefully) the day that my local shop gets 百合姫９ in, so may read some of that if I snag it. There’s also a new serialization of a new mildly ecchi yuri called 残光再撮, or Reshooting the Afterglow, about a college 3rd year who’s studying photography and, er, other women I guess. I can’t decide how I feel about the artwork but I’ll give it a shot perhaps. Idk if this has always been the case but Comic CUNE has been releasing some interesting stuff lately!
Oh, and there’s a new chapter of きょうはなにしよう out so I’ll be reading that ASAP too!
