I read a few chapters of スーと鯛ちゃん at lunchtime then this evening I went back to Animal Crossing to do some sentence breakdowns. It’s amazing how much grammar you can find to look up in 12 sentences and I’m still at a point that I get a little jolt of happiness every time I find that a group of characters that have confused me are actually a common grammar point that makes everything make sense!

I’ve already come across plenty of kanji in animal crossing so far so I find it interesting that when とたけけ / K.K Slider talks no kanji is used at all in the text. I wonder if that’s just a way of reflecting his personality as being more laid back?

Today: most of Chap. 47 of よつばと！ Best new word: さぼり. I am finding it hard to pull myself away from reading in English to do my Japanese reading, but I’m always glad when I get in at least a few pages.

Still not quite caught up to where I am in the game, but we’re very close.

Kanzaki-sensei apparently sees Carver as being 183 cm. …Just how short is Botts, then? Also, that’s too short, sorry. Carver’s a very big guy. He’s gotta have at least 10 cm on that. (Although his coworker at the end of that 4koma is like, “Aren’t you just talking about yourself?” so maybe that’s just Kanzaki’s own height? As expected, his wikipedia page doesn’t list his height, so who knows.)

I have a way to reliably farm lucida shards! Quest 061 rewards one for first and repeat completions! And it turns out 121 does the same for astral plumes! Sainted somas are suddenly so much easier to make.

Actually Quest 061 is pretty funny. This “大魔法使い” claims he wants to grant your wish, except he has a headache and needs some 呪力のモト from Shogum before he can. You bring some to him, he quaffs it, then says an “Alacadabra!”-type incantation and makes the room really bright… except you can juuust make out a man (his assistant coming in from the other room) coming up to you and putting something in your hand. The light clears, and you see that it’s a lucida shard, which the mage pretends he conjured. (If you answer that, no, this isn’t what you wished for, he’s silent for a moment before saying that you just haven’t realised it yourself yet, but this is actually your most heartfelt desire lol. Well, he’s not exactly wrong. You need two lucida shards for each sainted soma, of which you need two for each agate of evolution, of which you need a lot. That’s not even counting anything else you need lucida shards or sainted somas for.)

Also, I got a metal slime on the loading screen today. I knew about and have gotten the she-slime before, but not the metal slime. (Or if I did, I don’t remember.) I kinda wish I coulda gotten a picture. I don’t know if it indicates you’ll have good luck or what, but I did get two more slime shields and the last maid dress!

Read a chapter of 恋より青く during my lunch break, and then read a bit of the 3rd chapter of 残骸少女、きらきらな世界の底. Another chapter comes out this week, so I’m catching up! This chapter features some daily life at the android repair shop, which features more cool characters with rad outfits and some interesting characters. I have the physical copy of this chapter (in Comic Yuri Hime), and I have to say the art really shines on paper in a way that it doesn’t on screen. Cool all in all, though.

笠松紫浪 全木版画集
Read pages 28 - 32 - the book mentions a lost print “柘榴に黒猫” the main-body woodblock for this print was found but the rest are missing, so too is the original sketch, it was even mentioned to be for sale in a 1940s leaflet for Watanabe’s printshop but the actual print hasn’t been found. So it is unclear if it ever got printed or why. From the look of the unfinished woodblock the cat looks real cute

雨の新橋 (1935)

I love the limited, almost greyscale, palette he uses here to make it look dreary and yet have the lights of the building still look inviting. Shame that I couldn’t find a photo of it online that really brings out the detail in the puddled road.

春雨 湯島天神 (1935)

The colour composition of this one is sublime. So good. I like too that the pigeons simply blend into the picture and you slowly spot more as you look into it. Also, interesting to note, the book doesn’t mention this but I wonder if it was a conscious choice on Kasamatsu’s part to have the main colour of the piece 鳩羽色 - a traditional colour based on the colour of pigeon feathers, with the darker colours being 藍色鳩羽: a more indigo tinted 鳩羽色.

Finished the first chapter - it’s interesting reading his first published work, you can tell it is an early work but it shows the emergence of all his Ranpo-isms .

Also found this kanji: 鬮
An old way of writing 籤 [くじ] (Lottery)

To me, there’s something about 鬮 that makes it look less like a kanji and more like some ancient pictogram you’d find in an RPG on some old temple walls. Like it’s the secret forgotten symbol of the ancient Lottery-God hinted at in the lore.

I’ve been thinking about getting a e-reader and xteink products have been showing up quite a lot, especially since I got into traveller’s notebook recently. Japanese support doesn’t look great but I think I’d like to get used to reading more novels on my iPad mini first before looking at getting a eReader. Kobo and Kindle being the more established brand in my mind but they have their limitations from quick searches I’ve done. Xteink are small and could be fun to have but some people are saying they’re more of a companion reader that you can bring anywhere. Boox Palma is another one that has been in the radar.

Also finished all the available Witch Hat Atelier’s manga, so now I either start another manga or read a light novel. I found reading manga fun but not all that challenging and maybe a bit easier to skim through, so I’ll chip at reading
Also another thing I think was that it was easy to tell myself to just read a chapter and be done, it was easy to measure. With an ebook it’s a bit harder to measure because I don’t really have a page count and reading a whole chapter can take some time, so I am thinking of starting with reading 10 mins at a time for a few days with lookups but no writing down, then increase the time and include some writing down either during or after. I’ll be reading mushoku tensei, since I’ve devoured the anime and manga already I am familiar with the story but this is adding another layer of difficulty due to the medium, which requires more descriptions of situations, environment, expressions of characters and state of mind, whether it is expressed via words or grammatical structures.

It’s been slow reading because I spontaneously decided to unpack my figures… They’ve been in boxes since I moved about a year and a half ago. Anyhow, I’ve been continuing Dungeon Meshi and Mushishi. I also knocked out some reading that can’t be shared here lol. Once I’ve finished vol 2 of Meshi, I’m thinking of reading Cherry Magic or Clamp. It depends on which is easier. I suspect Cherry Magic is lol

Forgot to say this then, but my reading everyday streak was broken on July 19th as I fell asleep with the lights on before doing srs or reading

Sadly didn’t read more than a couple sentences yesterday but I’m keeping my streak. Spent the last hour catching up on reviews as well as reading, all while nodding off constantly on the couch but every time I woke up I just cracked on! Pretty impressed with myself lol. As expected, a plot twist has arisen, but it’s a nice one.

I continued the Masquerade Lullaby case. In Misty Online the murderer admitted he is the murderer and told us who he is going to murder next. Now we need to discover the identity of the murderer and prevent more killings. The case seems to be very long. I’m starting to get bored.
