reading dragonball is one of my aims, but i need to dedicate some time to it… i read the first few chapters in a sample pack and it was still taking longer than i wanted, so i’ll come back to it later

  • Started だん飯６, one chapter. Each chapter is taking me roughly about an hour to go through with a comb but I’m enjoying it and the pace is easy to keep up (week by week) so I guess it’s fine

Feeling like I’m getting into a comfortable rhythm with reading during this challenge! Encountering a lot of useful kanji at my current WK level, too, and immediately seeing it in the wild. Started chapter 3 of Naruto and trying to keep up daily reading of ふしぎ駄菓子屋 so I don’t let it languish for several weeks again.

Haven’t updated for a week, but read every day. A couple of those were very small reads. I’m plodding in but generally falling behind. I really need to be reading minimum one dictionary entry per day to not fall further behind! I am not.

Yesterday I read four Level 2 stories and two Level 1 stories.

I’m trying to push myself to read more Level 2 stories because Level 1 has gotten mostly easy for me.

  • めっきり = (on-mim) perceptibly; remarkably; considerably
  • 開(ひら)けた = enlightened; sensible; understanding. From 開(ひら)ける.
  • 無理(むり)ゲー = impossibly hard game
  • 体育座(たいいくずわ)り = sitting on the floor grasping one’s knees (as in a gym class)
  • 相互扶助(そうごふじょ) = mutual aid; interdependence
  • 元気良(げんきよ)く = cheerfully. From 元気(げんき)がいい = 元気(げんき)がある.
  • 拇印(ぼいん) = thumb print. Thumb is also 拇指(ぼし)
  • 朱肉(しゅにく) = a vermilion seal pad. 朱色(しゅいろ)の印肉(いんにく).
  • 七転八倒(しちてんばっとう) = writhing in agony (great pains)

April 13 | Home post

Long relaxing day at the cabin. Lots of reading and finishing stuff.

  • Read chapter 6 of Flying witch and finished the first volume
  • Finished the first chapter in Zenitendou 1
  • Finished chapter 5 in Super cub

After just 13 days of reading every day, already it gets easier. I can’t wait to see what reading will feel like in June!

For some reason it’s much easier to read this book on a big screen and not on the train. If I read on the train, I can hear my inner voice reading the words but none of it is sticking to my brain. The text feels so far away. Dialogue is easier, though.

That was the first week’s part done!

It’s 4:30 am and I couldn’t sleep, so I did the most logical thing and read four level 2 stories and five level 1 stories. I guess it’s a head start for today’s studying.

  • Half the week’s reading of 同じ夢, will finish tomorrow.
  • Started and finished Vol 10 of やばいやつ which just came out (well, a week or two ago). I’m really happy I can read (or speed-read) it in a day, but I’m also a bit annoyed because I’m at the point where often even if I understand all the words, I don’t necessarily know what’s going on because I can’t parse the sentences completely (at least at a first glance). In the end I ended up no-lookups reading half the volume, which felt good, but I had to read an english scanlation to fully understand what I just read.

I know I shouldn’t feel that bad about it because apart from the book club reads, mostly everything I read is something I’ve already read or watched in English, but it’s still kind of irritating that I need that safety net. Oh well.

  • ぎっくり腰(ごし) = low back pain; strained back. That is, 腰痛(ようつう).
  • 白内障(はくないしょう) = cataract. 緑内障(りょくないしょう) is glaucoma… green?
  • 割(わ)り勘(かん) = splitting the costs = 割(わ)り前(まえ)勘定(かんじょう)
