๐Ÿ“š๐Ÿ“š Read every day challenge - Winter 2023 โ˜ƒโ„

January 24 :snowflake: Home Post

Actually did quite a bit today! I started out with some ่Šฑๅญใใ‚“ and read about a volumeโ€™s worth; Iโ€™m getting close to where Iโ€™ve read up to in English, and oh boy have there been events. ใƒŸใƒ„ใƒโ€ฆ  Then I failed to resist the desire to start the next ๅฑฑ็Œซ book despite being in the middle of so many things already rip so I read some of ่™šๅƒใฎใ‚ฆใƒญใƒœใƒญใ‚น which is very intriguing so far :eyes: plus itโ€™s just nice to see all the characters again, ๅฑฑ็Œซโ€™s nonsense is a great time as always lmao. I also played some more Genshin Impact because of course I did; itโ€™s still a lot of fun! Very conducive to my love of exploring shiny things and ignoring actual missions :joy:

Meant to reply to this earlier whoops; unless thereโ€™s something else specific Iโ€™m unaware of, Iโ€™d imagine thatโ€™s just slurred ่กŒใใพใ›ใ‚“, yeah. ใกใ‚ƒ is a pretty common contraction of ใฆใฏ, so thatโ€™s essentially ใ“ใ“ใซใ„ใฆใฏใพใšใ„, which is similar but Iโ€™d say is more along the lines of like โ€œitโ€™s bad to be hereโ€ rather than โ€œmust not be hereโ€ if that makes sense!

Oooh congrats, thatโ€™s awesome!! :tada:

Reason for being a Chibi-chan.

Words of the day
  • ใ“ใใฐใ‚†ใ„ = ticklish. Perhaps like ็—’(ใ‹ใ‚†)ใ„.
  • ใ†ใ‚‰ใถใ‚Œใ‚‹(.) = to become shabby
  • ใ“ใ˜ใ‚Œใ‚‹ = to get complicated. Like making into a knot, perhaps. Kanji form is ๆ‹—(ใ“ใ˜)ใ‚Œใ‚‹.
  • ใกใ‚‡ใฃใ‹ใ„(.) = making a pass at someone / meddling
  • ใƒคใƒฏ = shabby; weak. ใƒคใƒฏใ‚ค is also valid. A Kanji form is ๆŸ”(ใ‚„ใ‚) / ๆŸ”(ใ‚„ใ‚)ใ„.
  • ใ‚ขใƒ•ใ‚ฟ(.) = aphtha; aphthous ulcer; aphthous stomatitis
  • ๆปž(ใจใฉใ“ใŠ)ใ‚‹ = to stagnate. Kanji for stagnant. Reading of ็•™(ใจใฉ)ใพใ‚‹ + ๅ‡(ใ“ใŠ)ใ‚‹.
  • ้ฝง(ใ‹ใ˜)ใ‚‹ = to nibble. Has Furigana.
  • ่ฒช(ใ‚€ใ•ใผ)ใ‚‹ = to crave for. No Furigana in context. I also saw this one in Kanken quiz a while ago.
  • ็—…ๅค‰(ใณใ‚‡ใ†ใธใ‚“) = lesion; pathological change
  • ็ ดๅฑ€(ใฏใใ‚‡ใ) = sad ending

  • ๆ—ขๅญ˜(ใใใ‚“) = existing. Second Kanji doesnโ€™t Dakuon this time.
  • ๅ„ชไฝ(ใ‚†ใ†ใ„) = advantageous position. Opposite is ๅŠฃไฝ(ใ‚Œใคใ„).
  • ้žญๆ’ป(ในใ‚“ใŸใค) = whipping; urging person to do something. First Kanji from ้ฃด(ใ‚ใ‚)ใจ้žญ(ใ‚€ใก).

chapter 4 down! this one was thankfully much easier than the last two, both in theme and writing style. much more fantastical too, with an inkstone thatโ€™s actually the dormant body of a ่Ÿฒ that usually lives in the clouds and eats precipitation. also (tw: body horror? ig?) some children end up vomiting smoke out of their ears and mouth at one point.

words that stuck out: ็กฏ (ใ™ใšใ‚Š, inkstone. ever want to learn this word, read this chapter), ๅŒ–็Ÿณ (ใ‹ใ›ใ, fossil), ๅทฅๆˆฟ (ใ“ใ†ใผใ†, workshop, studio)

yeah! that was the vibe i got, but i was also sleepy and my brain wasnโ€™t working :joy: thanks for taking the time to reply!

congrats!! :sparkles:

In the story today weโ€™re still following along with our travelers. Last time two of them were flirting over the cooking fire, now theyโ€™re flirting while playing dartsโ€ฆ it turns out these two are the couple we read about in another story, where Kim fought a wolf to protect Jack and then they got married. Itโ€™s the story which made me build the mnemonic for babies โ†’ ่ตคใกใ‚ƒใ‚“ โ†’ little red riding hood.

In the next story we meet a ใƒใƒผใƒซใƒ‰ไบบ(???). I guess ใƒใƒผใƒซใƒ‰ is a place? We learn what different rooms in a home are called. I especially like the living room: ๅฑ…้–“(ใ„ใพ). The sitting room. Pretty self-explanatory, right? There is a pretty nice illustration in this one.

Next story has some very abrupt change to a searing red color background. The king we meet is just as dreadful. Was a bit confused about his name, is it ใƒฌใƒ ใ‚น (Remus) or ใƒฌใƒžใ‚น (Remas)? Or is one of them the prince? Itโ€™s really unclear.

That would be ใƒใƒผใƒ‰. ใƒใƒผใƒซใƒ‰ has no dictionary entries and basically no relevant Google hits, so I lean towards โ€˜typoโ€™ (though I have no idea what for).

Day 22-24 Progress: ใ‚นใƒญใƒผ ใƒซใƒผใƒ— - 34-37่ฉฑ ไบ”ๅทปๅฎŒๆˆ!!!

Feels like itโ€™s been ages since I last posted. Still pretty sick and still going to work but getting better. Iโ€™ve been backsliding these last few days regarding studying, reading, and even making regular posts on the thread unfortunatelyโ€ฆ itโ€™s been a pretty demoralizing feeling for sure.

Word of the Day: ่ฑ†็Ÿฅ่ญ˜ใพใ‚ใกใ—ใ - trivia; snippet of knowledge. I love that the word is โ€˜bean knowledgeโ€™, itโ€™s kind of adorable.

Shimeji Simulation!! Probably my favorite manga series of the last few years (and one Iโ€™ve unsuccessfully shilled to a few friends), hope you enjoy!

Ah hm good point

Seems plausible. At first I thought maybe Barbados? (I would expect a country name in that sentence.) But that would be ใƒใƒซใƒใƒ‰ใ‚น - that would make for one hell of a typoโ€ฆ

After looking around the site a bit, I think ใƒใƒผใƒซใƒ‰็Ž‹ๅ›ฝ is just a fictional setting.

Iโ€™m looking forward to it:) Iโ€™m really drawn to the art style and I enjoy surreal comedy, but Iโ€™m hesitating a bit since it doesnโ€™t have furigana for all the kanji (aslo, infering meaning from context might be harder given the surrealism? Thoughts?). I donโ€™t think โ† that will be too much of a problem but around this time last year I started my first manga, Yotsuba vol1, and spent months struggling through it, and besides Satori Reader I havenโ€™t read too much since then so my confidence isnโ€™t the greatest. But now Iโ€™m somehow reading a couple manga volumes a week with tolerable comprehension so Iโ€™m sure Iโ€™ll get around to it soon enough (gonna read all the ones with furigana first though :upside_down_face:).

Youโ€™re right thatโ€™s the country name. Iโ€™ll make it clearer. Thanks for the feedback!

If only their school play was ใ€Œใ‚นใƒŽใƒผใƒ›ใƒฏใ‚คใƒˆใ€, you could have encountered it sooner =D

Also seen when it snows for Christmas.

Unfortunately, Iโ€™ve only read Shimeji Simulation in English so I canโ€™t really comment on its difficultyโ€ฆ but I just checked and actually WK has had a book club regarding the series semi-recently.. Itโ€™s listed as beginner but it definitely seems like people have had trouble with comprehension due to how bizarre the series can get so yeah might be worth shelving until you feel a bit more prepared for it.

As for no furigana I think the biggest effect of that is honestly it just takes you a bit longer to look up words you donโ€™t know. Which can definitely end up causing fatigue to accumulate but itโ€™s definitely more tedium than challenge!
