Didn’t get much reading in this week but I read the first chapter of Blue Box today and will definitely continue with it if it gets picked up as a book club! I was on the basketball team in highschool and play some badminton as an adult so this is a perfect pick for my first sports manga.

Words of the day

• ビシビシ(.) = (on-mim) being very strict / relentlessly. It’s the first meaning in context. Some possible other meanings include (floor) grating sound / running nose.
• キビキビ(.) = (on-mim) energetic; lively
• ビキビキ(.) = (on-mim) cracking (veins)
• ギロリ(.) = (on-mim) staring. Appears to be a variant of ギョロリ and ギラリ.
• ウダウダ(.) = (on-mim) going on and on about; talking nonsense

• 扮(ふん)する = to dress up. The Kanji like in 扮装(ふんそう).
• 仮装(かそう) = costume wearing; cosplaying / disguising
• 手(て)ぶら = empty-handed. It appears to have another meaning as well, from the last two Kana in Katakana.
• 果敢(かかん) = determined; daring
• 歯(は)ぐき = gingiva; dental gums = 歯茎(はぐき)
• 臀部(でんぶ) = buttocks. デン part is a buttock.
• 目尻(めじり) = outer corner of an eye. Just nothing regarding the butt, though it is tail / end in a way.

• 述語(じゅつご) = a predicate of a sentence, e.g. action, condition, explaining the subject.

A while back, I wanted to start reading some of the earlier works by Detective Conan’s mangaka. As part of that, I’ve been reading the first volume of Y∀IBA.

I think Yaiba is the most unlikable main character I have ever encountered. He goes out of his way to cause trouble for others, causes physical harm to others for fun, recklessly destroys incalculable amounts of property damage to random bystanders, and seems like he’s only rewarded for his efforts by getting what he wants.

I’m only considering continuing the series past volume 1 because it’s 24 volumes long. At that length, it feels like there has to be a redemption arc. There’s no way Yaiba made it 24 volumes doing the same antics seen throughout volume 1.

I finished the week 6 reading of 七回死んだ男 just in time to open week 7, and am 2/3 of the way done with the week 2 reading for レベル７, also right before the next week opens.

I’m yet again surprised by how easy レベル７ reads. I’m reading the paperback with few to no lookups and honestly kind of speeding along. I have no doubt I’ll finish the entire reading today and probably have time for starting the week 6 この本を盗むものは assignment (…if I don’t get distracted and do something else). I suppose I was expecting it to be much harder given that 火車 had so many lookups for me, and 刑事の子 was quite difficult…back in 2020. I wonder what I’d think of that book now

I was only gonna read a little, but then I realized the end of the chapter was probably pretty close so finished chapter 9. According to mine and my reading partner’s plan, I have another week scheduled for this chapter, but that is fine, it means I can dig into B$ tomorrow and maybe get ahead there a bit. Considering I’m one route behind on B$, that would be good. ^^

Also, I’ll put up the thread for Ouran HS Host Club some time next week. A few club duties should finish up then so I can spend some time with that. I kinda made myself a bit swamped with the amount of duties I’m performing this week, and I figured people would be happy to see me spamming the book club section less.

I’ve been neglecting to update again. So, on March 8 I finished the first chapter of 水たまりで息をする. The book is as strange and enjoyable as I was expecting so far. Looking forward to the next chapter.

Also on March 8 I read the first three dreams from 夢十夜. Two out of three were easier than expected, language-wise, and all of them so far were strange and interesting.

Then on March 9 I …started a new book It’s パレード, and I like it a lot so far. Four young people share an apartment in Tokyo, and each of them has a chapter from their point of view (a narrative device that is used a lot in the books I’ve been reading lately). The book was written in 2004, which feels like yesterday to me, but you can already see how some things already feel old - for example a character saying they’re not good with technology and stay away from internet and chat rooms. There’s also many passing references to famous people I know nothing about - and don’t care enough to look them up. I’m hoping the flavour I’m missing because of that is negligible.
