I’m getting impatient as I approach the end and really wanted to read more, but I’ve run out of energy. Never mind. Tomorrow I’m taking a break from this and starting ユートロニカのこちら側 with the informal reading group. Looking forward to it!

Ended up reading a bit before starting the day. There was sort of a pun in the chapter title, but turns out it’s very gross and morbid so I’m gonna spare all of you the details.

Aria: the masterpiece volume 3 – progress report
Yesterday: Continued up to page 331.
Today: Read up to page 342, finished chapter 29.
Only one chapter left for this volume.
I don’t have much to say about chapter 29. While it was nice to meet another new character, it ended up being uneventful – or rather more uneventful than usual because the series has had a relaxing progression with not that much happening in the chapters to begin with.

I am trying to cut back on my caffeine atm, so for the next week or so I have to remember that if my cognitive functions don’t feel quite right it’s because i’m re-adjusting to that. I just have to try not to get too frustrated and then also remind myself that it will be temporary
Read:

目を宙に泳がせている - letting one’s eyes swim in the air; my understanding is that this is sorta averting your eyes and glancing around when you aren’t sure how to react. Just thought it was a nice phrase, not sure how common-use it is as an expression
OH! I bet I know what it was now. SBR changed from a weekly to monthly schedule, so Araki and his team probably had to adjust their output after decades of being used to working a weekly schedule.

Lots of days went by in a rush… mostly I’ve been doing a tiny bit of the novel just before I fall asleep, progress has been very slow… some nights I even notice I happen to be rereading the same few sentences I left off at the previous night before I even realise it…

I hope I manage to keep up my reading during my trip, even by a little tiny bit! but the truth is my bf is visiting so even if I miss some days, can’t be helped!
February 10th!
Today I read the next chapter of Happiness as usual I enjoyed it even though it continues to be generally unpleasant.
I also did some reading practise with my tutor today - we were practising some grammar by reading dialogues and then making up our own variations on those dialogues.

rolls on the floor in shame Forgot to read…
Also, when it’s difficult to fill out my study log, it seems I now forget to later come back and fill this out…
Ugh. Not sure if I’ll read a lot tonight. I’m going to try to clear my reviews since apparently I’ve slacked off this whole week and then do some work from home. I’ve already started my reviews, so hopefully this means I’ll have some time to read later today. We’ll see how it goes.
I read 1 page of この本を盗む者は, leaving off on pg 7. I’d had this vision at work of coming home and curling up and just reading, see how far I could get, but I was super tired today and could hardly concentrate. *sigh*
Of course, I still managed some きみのまち ポルティア, and advanced the main storyline a bit. Arlo became my boyfriend and now it’s time to rescue him (and Sam and Mint) from the old mines below the tunnel between Portia and Sandrock. He mentioned before the corps having a stock of weapons, and Remmy gives you a corps-issue warhammer, but none of them ever use weapons?? (Well, aside from Sam and her boxing gloves, but no swords or hammers or spears or whatever.) Well no wonder y’all need a builder to help out with the dangerous monsters. やれやれ.
I think something's weird in the JP translation of Ack's dialogue.
The English line is, “Call me a doughnut, but I’m getting really popular around here.” He does just talk a little weird, but I can kinda get what he’s saying by feel, like, “call me a doughnut” isn’t meant to be literal but an expression that existed sometime between our time and when he went offline (300-odd years before MTaP, however far in the future that is from us) (though it feels like it should be “but I feel like I’m getting really popular around here”).
But the Japanese line (correcting for robot katakana for readability) is, “私のことはドーナツと呼んでください.しかし、私はだんだんと人気者になっています.” And I was just like, “???” Sure, it’s a literal translation, but it feels more like, “Call me Doughnut. However, I’m really getting popular (around here).” It feels like “call me (a) doughnut” is its own complete thought with the second sentence somehow? supposed to be contrary to it? even though it’s totally unrelated?? rather than “call me a doughnut, but…” There was another time before where he said the “call me a doughnut” bit too, but in Japanese, both times, it sounds like he actually wants to go by the name Doughnut. Unless that’s just me and a native speaker wouldn’t think it’s supposed to be literal?? (Probably doesn’t help either that when we first met him, it seemed like he was saying “Ack!” the interjection, not that he was saying his name was Ack, what with how often he said it…)
A few lines later, he says in English, “Fry my circuits, I’m not sure! There must be something wrong with my memory chips! Oh no!” and in Japanese it’s “わかりません.回路が熱い! メモリーチップが故障しています.もうだめだ!” Which, sure, sounds literal rather than like an expression like in the English, but it’s understandable this time.
Oh, and there’s an inconsistency in the name of his old girlfriend, Lara or Laura, not sure. But it’s always been written as ララ, until now in the info for this quest he gives you here (but not in the dialogue of course, oh no, there it’s still ララ), where it’s ラーラ, which is much closer to how it’s pronounced.
February 9th
Just Aomi today, although I’m alright with that since the reason I didn’t do any Japanese reading was that I spent the day finishing up the English fiction book that I started in… December. Yes, December… At one point, I mentioned my intention to do Japanese-reading earlier in the evening to reserve the later evening for English books, but that, unfortunately, has not happened yet. So my English reading got almost entirely put to the side, and I really didn’t like that! Will have to continue working on balancing everything.

What did I read?: 魔女と猫の話
How much did I read?: 8 pages
(Finished 3rd Story )
How long did it take me?: 56 min
I finished the 3rd story! I quite liked it! Some more lore about the witches’ cats were revealed, and I felt there was a little more going on in this story than the others, which were more intrapersonal. Although I do like those types of stories too! – it’s just it was nice to have a little more happening for a change.

Ended up busy yet again, but still got in some 山猫 so yay! I am very tired
But that’s why it’s fun! I’m not really at a point where I want to pour all my effort into reading something that’s written completely that way, but messing with the langauge like that here and there for fun and flair is cool. I just like fun language things, it’s the linguist in me
(That said, aozora is on the endless list of things I need to look into more, but who knows when that’ll happen really )
闇祓 update!
I finished chapter 2, which puts me just above 50 %.
This chapter was good. I liked it a lot. Very creepy, eerie, can’t trust nobody, people going crazy, that sort of thing. And just very tragic all in all. Surprisingly no 闇祓い in this one. Less surrealism in this chapter for sure, I’d even argue most of the things could be explained away with hallucinations / mental illness. Some things are left unclear, but it only adds to the atmosphere. I thought it was nicely done. Some great imagery in this chapter, 朝陽 being starved from chocolate and licking the wrappers, the blue masking sheets (?) from people moving out… Very nice chapter all in all.
The remaining chapters are quite short, let’s see how it goes.
I read today. Just not a lot. I was in a bad mood all day and couldn’t focus.
11th feb
didn’t go back to 四月は君の嘘and instead read some of the japanese apollo justice script (i’m gonna play more later so might as well). also planning on going on granblue again later, tho for how long i’m not sure.

Last night before bed, I watched the cure dolly video on passive form (that was the main grammar point in the 新完全マスター reading yesterday that I was struggling with) and when I woke up today everything seemed to be clicking as I read. Treating it as “receptive” instead of “passive” and thinking about who/what the receiver is made all practice questions suddenly make sense. I had kind of suspected that “passive” was sort of a misnomer just from seeing it where it was used and being unable to really parse how the sentences were supposed to be passive, but apparently all I needed to do was watch this, sleep, and now everything magically clicks. Isn’t the brain just neat?
Read:
- 夜カフェ pg 69 → 77 (finished ch 6)
- 三ツ星カラーズ ch 8, 9 + おまけ done with volume 1! - wasn’t expecting to finish a volume so quickly since this hasn’t been my main focus, but the volumes are pretty short. As I suspected, going to something easier (except for 象 chapter) has been really enjoyable
