📚📚 Read every day challenge - Winter 2022 ☃❄

Hi everyone,

I am starting right now with Japanese, and my level doesn’t allow me to read yet. Maybe I can join the challenge with a calender for beginner which I purchased a few weeks ago. That would be hard enough! がんばりますよ。

This is exactly what I am ready to do (and kind of started already!) I am as new to Manga as you can get (and the Japanese language for that matter), but I have been working my way through a page or two of よつばと! each day, and I’m very proud of that! It’s already a part of my study log daily goals, but I’m excited about this thread to also encourage me for two months at the very least! Excited!

You might enjoy the Tadoku graded readers - they’re free and many of them have audio so you can practice listening along as well.

Series listing with user ranked levels from Natively
Aoi (青い) - this is an example base level reader

A calendar is also good practice, but you might find yourself unchallenged by it before the end of the challenge!

Goals

As usual, my primary goal is read something every day. I don’t want to get too ambitious this time of year, because work tends to take over my life during this time (although frankly, it’s been taking over my life on a much more consistent basis lately, so maybe this won’t really feel any different :upside_down_face:)

I feel like I don’t really have a specific focus for this challenge, either. There are a few things I’d like to read or work toward completing, but I’m also open to the idea of ditching all of those and doing something completely different xD I mainly just want to read what feels good to me in the moment.

Some ideas I have right now:

:snowflake: ハイ☆スピード!
I started this light novel in the Fall Challenge and got about two thirds of the way through - basically, it’s the light novel that Free! (the anime) is based on, which makes it special to me because that anime basically set me on the path to learning Japanese. I had a lot of fun reading it last challenge, but it’s also not something I want to rush or force myself to read if I’m in a bad mood. I want to enjoy ^^ And I may or may not be in the mindset to do that for most of this challenge, depending on work

:snowflake: 囀る鳥は羽ばたかない
I’m supposed to be reading this with the ongoing book club but :x I haven’t opened it for monthsss

:snowflake: 365日にっぽんのいろ図鑑 and まいにち暦生活 日本の暮らしを楽しむ365のコツ
I got these toward the end of the Fall Challenge - basically, they have short little blurbs each day talking about either a color or life in Japan. I’d like to read these entries daily ^^

:snowflake: MORE CUTE MANGA
I’m sure this will happen lol, I just found the cutest manga I need to buy as soon as it comes out in mid-January as if I don’t have enough cute manga already just kidding, there’s no such thing as too many cute manga

Hi there! May I ask if it’s alright to share your reading progress daily in this thread?

For January 1st, I managed to complete 1 065+ characters of また、同じ夢を見てた! Really very happy because I’ve been stuck on the 2nd paragraph for who knows how long

hello fellow gamers

I’m not too far in my learning journey, but I’ve ordered the first 9 manga in the 世話やきキツネの仙子さん.

Super late, but I’m going to start working my way through it when it comes in!

I started my reading journey a little bit earlier this week because of the holidays and managed to read quite a lot! I read three volumes of two different tropy high school romance manga and after that I started reading Kimi no na wa. I was really surprised how two full days of reading made reading a novel so much easier, I read 5 pages in less than an hour so I am really proud of what I achieved in the 4 days before this challenge ^^

Jan 1:

  • 君の名は。page 14-15
  • Maybe some manga later if I feel like it

I wasn’t planning on participating in these challenge threads quite yet, but I realized I have a daily checkbox for reading in my planner, and I’ve been reading almost every day for months while trying to keep up with the 大海原と大海原 book club, and now I’m reading even more since I started a big translation project . So why not! At the very least, it’ll give me an idea of how often I manage to meet that daily goal.

I probably won’t be posting much about my daily reading in this thread, though, since usually that kind of thing ends up in my study log.

I might also be trying to read some in Spanish, depending on how much time I have. We’ll see!

What I'm planning on reading:
  • 大海原と大海原 volume 2 will probably keep me occupied throughout January, since I’m behind on the book club and still have quite a few chapters left to go.
  • I’ve been translating the DDT Pro-Wrestling official recaps after each show, since their former translator just left the company, and the show recaps are now my best hope of being able to understand some of what the characters are saying. There’s about one show a week, and usually it takes me at least a few days to translate the recap for it, though for bigger shows, it takes longer. Because these translations are time-sensitive (I want to get the last one done before the next show whenever possible), this is my priority over other reading.
  • After I finish Wadanohara, I’m probably not going to start another manga until I become a more proficient reader, since I want to have enough energy to keep up with DDT. But I might try translating at least a few tweets on days when I don’t have anything else to work on. It’d be a good opportunity to do more intensive reading than I usually have time for.

Hey everyone,

Just kinda started out reading. Very rough so far  But reading children’s stories from “Learn Japanese with stories”, read the first 2 stories from the book today. Planning to continue reading and rereading these books,(I got 1 through 10) to work my way into being able to read NHK news and similar stuff by the end of this challenge.

Honestly it was great fun, I put about 20 hours in to the game when I last played it around a year ago (Id probably restart if I where to play again). I Found a lot of the sentences where “knowledge + 1”. although I would get stumped at times with specifics of what characters where saying, I’d always know what to do to progress the game. I would say if you can read yotsubato you could play yokai watch. Id recommend looking up a few vids to see if the gameplay intrests you though as it is quite unique if i remember rightly. (im talking about the first one that came out on 3ds btw)
Do be aware though that for Japanese 3ds games you need a Japanese 3ds as they’re region locked. (sadly)

hope that helps!!

I just realised that a lot of the things I plan on reading are what you might consider rereads, I hope that’s not cheating. I did have a one year break from Japanese so I felt this was the way to get back on my feet. plus I probably forgot a bunch.

Another year, a new season of reading and a fresh start. I’ll be trying to give regular updates on what I read just like in previous threads. This post will be used to keep track of my goals, progress and serve as a collection of all the updates I did throughout the challenge. For those that care, you can also follow me on bookmeter, where I also track what I read. I still haven’t quite figured out how everything works, but you’ll have to forgive me for that…

Goals :dart:

  • Read a chapter per day
  • Read Spy x Family vol 4-5
  • Read Look Back (one-shot)

Happy new year from Onion Island! :fireworks:
Got a nice start today, completing the New Years countdown in Japanese at midnight, and learning 流星群 (meteor shower) from Isabelle when logging in this morning to check on everyone. Had a few quick chats with my islanders, and I’ll be logging back in later to go and view my meteor shower and speak to Celeste.

Started Vol.2 of レンタルおにいちゃん and despite saying I wanted to just read a page a day I ended up reading all 42 pages of chapter one. I’d forgotten how quickly this story pulls you in because you’re hoping for a happy ending. Word of note from this chapter was 凸凹 (でこぼこ), to indicate uneven shape on some homemade hamburgers - won’t be learning that one until level 59!

Tanuki Scroll I: 2022年は寅年! :tiger2:

Since today’s the first day of the new year I thought I’d read about the year of the tiger.

And right off the bat, new kanji! (とら), the same as 虎 but only used for the Zodiac.

This was quite a bit more difficult than what I’m used to so it took me awhile.

☆ Learnings ☆

New Words

「とら」ーTiger (Zodiac only)
干支 「えと」ー Sexagenary cycle; 60-term cycle of 12 zodiac animals combined with 5 elements in the traditional Chinese calendar. [Shamelessly copied from Jisho because that is a rather specific meaning]
壬寅 「みずのえとら」ー Water Tiger (Zodiac). [Was not expecting that reading at all]
古代中国 「こだいちゅうごく」 ー Ancient China
五行 「ごぎょう」 ー The Avatar five elements (in Chinese philosophy: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water)
十干 「じっかん」 ー The 10 calendar signs
十二支 「じゅうにし」 ー 12 signs of the Zodiac
言及 「げんきゅう」 ー Reference / Allusion
結び 「むすび」 ー Ending, Conclusion / Join, union, connecting. [I don’t think the むす reading for 結 is on WaniKani]
イラスト ー Illustration, picture, sketch
キャラクター ー Character, personality
丑寅 「うしとら」 ー Northeast [Archaic Word]. [Also new kanji: (うし) - sign of the ox, which looks like it is only used in Japanese for Zodiac related words]

New Readings

陰陽 「いんよう」ー Cosmic Dual Forces or Yin and Yang. [I only knew of the おんみょう reading]

Forgotten Meanings

もともと 「元々」 ー Originally / from the start
発生 「はっせい」 ー Outbreak / Occurrence / Incidence
本来 「ほんらい」 ー Originally / Primarily. [Woops I forgot what this meant, this is a lv. 5 word]

Bonus Zodiac Names!

Because I think the Zodiac is really cool here’s a list of them:

「ね」 ー Rat :rat:
「うし」 ー Ox :ox:
「とら」 ー Tiger :tiger2:
「う」 ー Rabbit :rabbit2:
「たつ」 ー Dragon :dragon:
「み」 ー Snake :snake:
「うま」 ー Horse :horse:
「ひつじ」 ー Goat :goat:
「さる」 ー Monkey :monkey:
「とり」 ー Rooster :rooster:
「いぬ」 ー Dog :dog2:
「い」 ー Boar :boar:

I’m sorry that they’re not all in line perfectly
